Other stops include Veracruz, one of the country’s oldest and largest ports, founded in the 16th century by Spanish settlers, and Palenque, the mystical Maya site built in the emerald green jungles of Chiapas. Later visit the lively colonial city of Merida, and the Mayan site of Chichen Itza recently voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Your highlights of Mexico tour ends in Cancun where you can add a beach extension.

TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1

MEXICO CITY – PUEBLA

Your tour guide will pick you up from your Mexico City hotel. Transfer to the colonial city of Puebla which features more than 70 churches and 1000 colonial buildings in the historical center. En route, we will visit the pyramid of Cholula, which is covered and looks like a hill with a church on top. In Puebla, we will visit the Zocalo, the monumental Cathedral, and Rosary Chapel. Overnight in Puebla.

DAY 2

PUEBLA – XALAPA – VERACRUZ

Departure from Puebla to Xalapa, the state capital of Veracruz, where we visit the spectacular Museum of Anthropology which features important artifacts from Olmec, Huastec, and Totonac civilization. Then visit of Ex-Hacienda del Lencero, once the residence of famous president Lopez de Santa Ana. Afterward, transfer to the port city of Veracruz, one of the country’s oldest and largest ports, founded in the 16th century by Spanish settlers. Enjoy the lively Zocalo by night. Overnight in Veracruz.

DAY 3

VERACRUZ – TLACOTALPAN – CATEMACO

Visiting Veracruz is the stepping stone to enjoying the wonders of the Gulf of Mexico coast. With the sea as the horizon, your heart will beat to the rhythm of the marimba as you visit its monumental Colonial buildings that coexist peacefully with the modern, historical and military buildings, the parks, the museums, the beaches, the great aquarium and the boardwalk, which is the pride of Veracruz. Enjoy a city tour of Veracruz including the Zocalo, Cathedral, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, which is Neoclassical in style, and the famous Portales. Later in the day, visit the picturesque town of Tlacotalpan. Tlacotalpan is the place where most Mexican soap operas are made! Beautifully painted houses, calm cobbled streets, colorful boats at the riverside, park with palm trees and a marble floor and a church that looks like it was decorated with a whipped cream. All of that below a shining sun. That is Tlacotalpan, a small village situated on the shore of the river „Papaloapan“. Due to the hot humid climate, the surrounding nature is lush and green with fields of tobacco and sugar cane.  In 1998 Tlacotalpanwas proclaimed a world heritage by UNESCO. Continue to San Andres Tuxtla and to Catemaco, more commonly known within the country as the Tierra de brujos (“land of the sorcerers”). Overnight in Catemaco.

DAY 4

CATEMACO – NANCIYAGA – VILLAHERMOSA

Today a boat ride on Lake Catemaco to Monkey Island and a visit of the Ecological Reserve Nanciyaga await you. Back in Catemaco town, visit the Basilica del Carmen located on the Zocalo. Later on transfer to Villahermosa. Overnight in Villahermosa.

DAY 5

VILLAHERMOSA – PALENQUE – CAMPECHE

Villahermosa is the capital of the State of Tabasco, known as “La Esmeralda del Sureste”. In the morning, you start with a visit to La Venta Park Museum, a symbol of Olmeca Culture and tourist attraction of the city. It has 36 megalithic stone structures surrounded by a zoo with local animals.

Continue to Palenque, the mystical Maya site built in emerald green jungles of Chiapas. Visit the famous Temple of Inscriptions, the burial site of Ruler Pakal. Afternoon transfer to Campeche. Overnight in Campeche.

DAY 6

CAMPECHE – UXMAL – MERIDA

Campeche is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful capitals in the country. UNESCO named it as a model of a colonial baroque city planning. Additionally, it was declared a World Heritage Site. Enjoy a city tour of Campeche including a visit to its typical Baluartes (= Fortifications). Continue to Uxmal, once an important Mayan trading place. The name Uxmal means ‘thrice-built’ in Mayan. This name refers to the construction of its highest structure, the Pyramid of the Magician which was built on top of existing pyramids. Visit the Pyramid of the Magician, the Nunnery, and the Governor’s Palace. In the afternoon we will take you to Merida, the state capital of Yucatan. Merida is a quiet paradise. The peacefulness of the town and the beauty of its streets, make it a place of elegance and contrast amid its colonial houses, Mayan ruins, and architecture. Its food, layered with exquisite gastronomic heritage, will take over your taste buds.  The Plaza Mayor is a vibrant meeting place where locals enjoy traditional drinks, such as champola or sorbet. Enjoy the lively colonial city in a walking tour around the Zocalo. Overnight in Merida.

DAY 7

MERIDA – CHICHEN ITZA – CANCUN

Today we will take you to Chichen Itza, the largest of the archaeological cities of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. It is one of Mexico’s most visited tourist destinations. It was granted World Heritage Site status in 1988 by UNESCO.

Dominating the center of Chichén is the Temple of Kukulkan (the Maya name for Quetzalcoatl), often referred to as “El Castillo” (the castle). This step pyramid has a ground plan of square terraces with stairways up each of the four sides to the temple on top. Along the south wall of the Temple of Warriors are a series of what are today exposed columns, although when the city was inhabited these would have supported an extensive roof system. Learn more about the famous Kukulkan pyramid with the Equinox spectacle, Temple of Warriors, Holy Cenote and Observatory.
