The Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

The Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

Beautiful Nicaragua is called the “country of colonial cities and lakes” or also the “country of volcanoes and lakes”. It offers coffee and tobacco cultivation, Spanish colonial history, active volcanoes as well as a practically untouched rainforest and Caribbean islands. There are so many things to see and do in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is ideal for those who are looking for a special and authentic experience. It is culturally and naturally diverse with many tourist activities and attractions. Discover Nicaragua, the heart of Central America, on your Nicaragua family vacation or your honeymoon in Nicaragua. Another fantastic way to experience the highlights of Nicaragua with freedom and flexibility is a scenic self-drive tour.

In this article, we will discuss some of the best places to visit in Nicaragua.

Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

1. GRANADA

Nicaragua is richly blessed with original preserved remains of Spanish colonial history. You can find churches, palaces, manor houses, and monasteries in the colonial style of the country.

León and Granada, the two eternally rival colonial cities, offer a particularly imposing selection of historic buildings and districts that can be found around the country.

Granada is one of the oldest cities in the Americas and its well-kept compact old town is a tourist favorite. It is a great introduction to the country and an easy city to wander and explore on foot. Its beautiful churches, colorful buildings, and quaint streets make it a photographer’s dream. Palms rise amidst a sea of red tile roofs against the backdrop of lakeshores and volcanoes. There are baroque and Moorish aesthetic influences interspersed throughout the cityscape.

The surrounding natural beauty has also inspired artists, poets, and writers well before the Spanish founded it in 1524. Combine these charming features with the relaxed air of the Nicaraguan people – one of the happiest in the world – and you have quite possibly the most laid-back and accessible city in Central America, fully imbued with color and culture.

2. LAS ISLETAS DE GRANADA

While in Granada, make sure to also include a visit to Las Isletas or Islets of Granada. They are located within Lake Nicaragua and are more than 25,000 years old. The islands were initially formed from the ash and stones of the Mombacho volcano.

Lake Nicaragua, Central America’s largest lake, is home to an archipelago of 365 islands. Formed by the eruption of Mombacho Volcano, the Islets of Granada include uninhabited isles, traditional fishing villages, private residences, and luxurious resorts.

3. LAGUNA DE APOYO

Nicaragua is famous for its lakes and Laguna de Apoyo is a must-visit.

Laguna de Apoyo is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 18-square mile body of water contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano (think big warm clean lake!). Laguna de Apoyo is one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful natural wonders and a great place to vacation. For anyone traveling through Nicaragua, it definitely is one of the best things to do in Nicaragua and should not be missed.

Here you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or admire the beautiful landscape around you on an eco-friendly boat tour! I recommend staying at one of the beautiful boutique hotels along the lake rather than visiting the lagoon on a day trip or tour.

4. MASAYA VOLCANO

Masaya Volcano is one of Nicaragua’s top places to visit and an easy day trip from Granada.

The most amazing part about visiting this active volcano is how close you can get to the lip of the crater. You can simply drive up to the edge and park. Looking down into the crater, you can see a lake of molten lava.

Visit after dark to see the glow the bubbling lava creates inside the pit. If you visit during the day, there is a visitor center on-site, as well as picnic facilities.

5. LEON

The west-coast city of León boasts many fascinating attractions. The Cathedral of León, also known as La Catedral del Espíritu Santo, is a beautiful church that was constructed in the late 17th century. It is framed by a number of dazzling baroque and rococo structures. Nearby, the ruins of León Viejo are located; remnants of an ancient village built by Spanish colonists in 1523. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

León buzzes with energy, lively and full of young people. It is a university city and in fact, Nicaragua’s first university was founded here in 1912. The city is packed with interesting museums and murals. León served as the capital of Nicaragua during colonial times.

6. CERRO NEGRO VOLCANO

Another volcano experience, geared more towards adventure junkies, awaits you at Cerro Negro near Leon.

Here you can volcano-board down Nicaragua’s youngest volcano. It is one of the most popular things to do in Nicaragua and you will need to book a tour to partake. It is also a unique tourism scenario providing a stunning natural setting, the opportunity to hike an active cone and see its crater, and canopy lines available for visitors.

The steep slopes of this black volcano lack any vegetation. On and around the volcano lies a big layer of volcanic ash and rocks. An eruption in 1999 has left a wide border of black, volcanic material around the Cerro Negro and there are two smaller craters right next to the volcano which were recently formed.

 7. ESTELI

This charming town lies in a valley at an altitude of 2,500 feet in the northeast of Nicaragua. It is surrounded by mountains, in a beautiful natural area. Here, mass tourism is still far away and you can immerse yourself in the real Nicaraguan way of life.

Estelí is Nicaragua’s agriculture centre. In this region, a lot of (organic) vegetables and fruit are being produced, but also crops like tobacco. You can visit a tobacco plantation or one of the cigar factories where high-quality cigars are being produced.

Other activities include hiking, waterfalls, lakes, or canyoning. There’s a lot to see and do.

8. ISLA OMETEPE

Isla Ometepe is in Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America. The island has not one but two volcanos, both of which can be climbed.

Maderas is the volcano in the south of Ometepe, and it is less active than the Concepcion volcano in the north. The hike to the summit of Maderas takes you to a beautiful crater lake. There is also an impressive waterfall at the base.

The island is also popular for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, or kayaking the Istian River. The natural Ojo de Agua pool is a great way to spend a few hours cooling off.  You can also just relax on the white sands of Santo Domingo beach.

Accommodation on the island is often on a finca or eco-hotel. Make sure to include Ometepe Island on your list of things to do in Nicaragua and spend at least 2, better 3, nights here!

9. EMERALD COAST

On the southwest coast of Nicaragua, San Juan Del Sur has always been the main tourist destination, but more and more people are now also adding the Emerald Coast and Popoyo to their to-do list while visiting Nicaragua.

The once-sleepy Emerald Coast of Nicaragua has now awakened, with the rapid advance of tourism due to a newly paved highway, the opening of the Costa Esmeralda Airport, and a variety of golf courses and new upscale resorts.

The Emerald Coast is the 20-mile stretch of coastline between the towns of Tola and Astillero to the north which is the furthest city on the coast in the Rivas province. The area’s main tourism comes from surfers as this region houses the best waves in Nicaragua, including Playa Colorado and Popoyo.

10. SAN JUAN DEL SUR

Nicaragua is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America. San Juan del Sur, located on the Pacific Coast, has one of the best. The town is a great base for tourists looking to explore the area’s natural beauty and rich history.

What used to be a fishing village has developed into a bigger place that is well geared to tourism, with lots of accommodations and restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

San Juan del Sur is a favorite of surfers (try a surf lesson!) and backpackers and is also a great place to catch a wonderful Pacific sunset – definitely one of the top things to do in Nicaragua.

If you find San Juan del Sur too busy, then located along a bumpy dirt road just twenty minutes north of San Juan del Sur, Playa Maderas makes a fantastic alternative.

11. LITTLE CORN ISLAND (MY PERSONAL FAVORITE!)

If you are looking for calm waters and white sand beaches, head to the Corn Islands on the Caribbean Coast.  You will need to catch a flight from Managua to access these pristine and remote islands. From Big Corn Island you take a ferry to Little Corn Island but trust me, the effort is worth it!

Little Corn is tiny, only 500 people live on this small island where there are no cars and which is a real jewel for diving enthusiasts.

Life is slow in the Corn Islands: just relax, snorkel, dive, lay at the beach, eat some amazing seafood and feel in paradise. A week will quickly slip by as you relax and unwind and explore its underwater pleasures.

Check out our Caribbean Honeymoon in Nicaragua for more details on the islands and an amazing boutique hotel.

The Best Honeymoon Destinations in Central America in 2024

Honeymooning in Central America is an unforgettable experience with its marvelous cultures, gorgeous sceneries, and delicious cuisines. Despite this fact, it’s quite overlooked when it comes to top honeymoon destinations. Some of the most romantic spots in the world are in Central America, yet many do not know of them.

From gorgeous beach resorts to lush rainforests, we have compiled a list of the best honeymoon destinations in Central America.

The Best Honeymoon Destinations in Central America

PANAMA:

1. Bocas del Toro

Only a one-hour flight from Panama City, you will find this hidden gem honeymoon destination in Panama.

These islands feel like you have been transported into a whole new country. The beaches surrounding Bocas are lined with dazzling turquoise waters, sparkling white sands, and plenty of coconut trees, and mangroves!

Known as Panama’s hidden Caribbean gem, Bocas del Toro welcomes adventure-seeking honeymooners who will find plenty to do to keep them occupied – from snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing and hiking. Bocas is also home to a vibrant tropical rainforest, cultural sites, and some of the best beaches in Panama – all complete with a friendly, laidback vibe.

There are several islands of Bocas del Toro, so spend a day exploring all the different islands and beaches it has to offer! If you want something really romantic, try going horseback riding together on the beach – that is the ultimate honeymoon activity!

2. Boquete

This gorgeous destination is the ideal honeymoon spot for couples looking for an outdoorsy honeymoon. Boquete is a small town on the Caldera River, in western Panama. The surrounding Chiriquí Highlands are home to coffee plantations and the Barú Volcano National Park, to the west. Highlights in the park include the towering Barú Volcano and Los Quetzales Trail, which offers sightings of the elusive quetzal bird. Boquete is also Panama’s adventure capital: From ziplining to rafting, horseback riding to hiking over suspension bridges, this region has it all.

When you want a rest from all those fun activities, enjoy the lovely local festivals during the months of December through April. Watch the parades of flowers during the La Feria de las Flores y del Café, or enjoy some local jazz music during the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival.

There is so much to do here, you will see why it is one of the top honeymoon spots in Panama.

3. San Blas Islands (Guna Yala)

This hot honeymoon destination is a group of over 300 islands that make up the archipelago of San Blas. What makes San Blas special is how its tourism is fully controlled by the local Guna tribe. So you can travel knowing that you will be supporting indigenous communities.

The beaches of San Blas are untouched by mass tourism leaving peaceful, empty beaches for couples to enjoy in privacy.

The San Blas Islands, or Guna Yala, are a beach paradise for honeymooners – if you are OK with very basic accommodation for a few days! There is no AC, no TV, no warm water but I can guarantee you an unforgettable experience. The white sands, crystal-clear waters, and gentle waves will provide peak relaxation. The islands should definitely make your list of the top honeymoon destinations in Central America.

COSTA RICA

4. La Fortuna

Literally meaning “The Fortune,” in Spanish, La Fortuna is one of the most beloved honeymoon destinations in Costa Rica and Central America.

Hidden at the base of the Arenal Volcano, the town of La Fortuna has so many beautiful sights for couples to explore. The town center is a gorgeous park filled with bright, colorful gardens and a magnificent church. It is a fantastic spot to go for a nice walk and enjoy some of the local cuisines.

But the main reason for La Fortuna’s popularity is the plethora of activities. You can do almost all of Costa Rica’s adventure tours out of La Fortuna. You can explore the rainforest canopy on a hanging bridge, fly through the sky on a zip line, rappel down waterfalls, go whitewater rafting, and hike through lava fields in the Arenal Volcano National Park to get the best views in Costa Rica.

After a full day of activities, there’s nothing better than to soak in one of La Fortuna’s geothermally heated hot springs.

5. Uvita

Uvita is a small village in the South Pacific, one of the best places in Costa Rica for a tranquil tropical vacation or honeymoon. It is filled with incredible beaches, mystical mangrove swamps, and beautiful estuaries. The best part about Uvita is its laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy a relaxing honeymoon in the soft ocean waves.

From December to April, visit the Marino Ballena National Park to see the humpback whale migration. It is an incredibly unique experience that most don’t get to see.

Costa Rica is known for its surf and yoga schools, and Uvita is no exception. As a bonus, this happens to be a particularly good stretch of coastline for families and beginners. For more advanced surfers, drive a few miles north to Dominical — a mecca that attracts surfers from around the world.

Both Uvita and Dominical are great honeymoon spots if you like regions that are less developed than other more popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica, such as Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. We do!

This Central American honeymoon destination is all about being in the moment, which is exactly what you want during this special occasion.

6. Osa Peninsula

This rainforest destination is a must-go honeymoon destination for those who want the best of both worlds.

Located on the Southern Pacific coast, the Osa Peninsula is surrounded by lush rainforests but also borders the ocean creating some of the best-secluded beaches in Costa Rica. One day you can hike and explore the waterfalls of the Corcovado National Park, and the next go snorkeling in the ocean!

The Osa Peninsula is known for its biodiversity, so you are bound to see many animals in the wild that you wouldn’t typically see.

7. Puerto Viejo

If you are a foodie couple, then Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast is where you need to have your honeymoon!

Located in Limon Province, close to the border with Panama, this town is famous for its Caribbean-inspired cuisine that stands out from the rest. There is nothing better than fresh seafood right by the ocean. Between each meal, take a rest on Puerto Viejo’s breathtaking beaches, or go surfing and work off all the food you just ate!

The village of Cahuita, about 10 miles north of Puerto Viejo, is worth visiting and is home to an awesome national park. This is where the jungle meets the sea. Here you can spot eyelash pit viper snakes, sloths, howler monkeys, white-nosed coatis, and many types of birds. The park also hosts several beaches.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has something for everyone. Wildlife watching, horseback riding, night hikes, surfing, waterfalls, fishing, yoga, and Caribbean cooking or dance lessons are just a sample of the many activities in the area. And when the sun sets, Puerto Viejo becomes even livelier with its many beach bars playing live music on the beach. This town is the perfect blend of relaxation, food, and fun.

Visit nearby Bocas del Toro in Panama

If you have a few extra nights in your itinerary and want to see another country, we recommend a visit to Panama’s Bocas del Toro islands. Bocas has an even more laid-back Caribbean feel than Puerto Viejo and is a fabulous choice for an active beach vacation. Bocas del Toro is also home to a vibrant tropical rainforest and some of the best beaches in Panama. Those looking for a party scene will find it in Bocas Town.

8. San Juan del Sur

Known for its exceptional surfing beaches, San Juan is the go-to honeymoon spot for active couples that like a good party. During the day, learn how to surf from the locals on one of their famous beaches such as Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa. After surfing, take the hike to see the world’s largest statue of Jesus that sits atop a hill, giving you the ultimate views of San Juan. It is a must-go spot to get that perfect sunset scene.

When the sun goes down San Juan doesn’t sleep. There are a variety of bars in the city where you can enjoy a lovely cocktail by the beach and have some fun with the locals.

9. Little Corn Island

About 50 minutes from the eastern coast of Nicaragua is its best-kept secret – Little Corn Island. When you think of an untouched island, this is it. With no cars, motorbikes, or airports, there is only you and the gorgeous beach.

There is little to no internet connection here, so it is a great spot for couples who want to bond and be off the grid. Bring some books and card games to this little island and enjoy every moment with each other.

There are lovely hammocks on the island where guests can lay down and watch the golden sunsets hit the clear blue ocean. This hidden gem will definitely give you an unforgettable honeymoon experience in Nicaragua and definitely is one of the best honeymoon destinations in Central America!

BELIZE

10. Ambergris Caye

Belize’s largest island, Ambergris Caye, is protected by 190 miles of Barrier Reef which is the second largest in the world. The people that inhabit the island are called “Sanpedranos,” and speak multiple languages at the same time creating their unique dialect. The Sanpedranos are famous for taking pride in their culture and love to share it with tourists.

Explore the Hol Chan Marine Reserve or the Shark Ray Alley, and snorkel with the native sharks and stingrays – it will make for an unforgettable experience! With its gorgeous beaches, wonderful local population, and unique adventures, it is no wonder that Ambergris Caye is the top honeymoon destination on a Belize vacation.

11. Placencia

What began as a humble fishing village has now evolved to one of Belize’s hottest honeymoon destinations.

Placencia has also emerged as an increasingly popular destination in the Caribbean. Boasting 16 miles of golden sands in the southeastern region of Belize, it is no wonder why the Placencia Peninsula is one of the top must-see Belize attractions. Rapidly becoming the eco-tourism capital of Belize, Placencia is notorious for golf carts and bicycles zipping through the rustic streets.

With its gorgeous beaches and proximity to lush jungles, there is something for all types of honeymooners. Placencia is also famous for its emphasis on snorkeling during whale shark season – perfect for marine life lovers! After swimming with the whale sharks, take a day trip to Laughing Bird Caye National Park – an area of 1.8 acres that is pure island bliss. Imagine a picture-perfect island with clear waters, gentle waves, and soft white sand – that is Laughing Bird Caye in a nutshell.

12. San Ignacio

Situated in Western Belize, this lively city is known as much for its ancient ruins as it is for its lively downtown scene.

In San Ignacio, you can start your adventure with hiking, cave tubing, and zip-lining through the jungles of Belize, and surround yourself with top-notch nature views. When you want something a little more lowkey, you and your partner can take a stroll downtown and enjoy a nice cocktail while talking with the locals.

San Ignacio is the best honeymoon destination in Belize for couples that want to be in nature but also want some fun.

MEXICO

13. Oaxaca

Oaxaca is known as one of the most important cultural and culinary cities in Mexico, so if you are a foodie and want to honeymoon in Mexico, you have to come here! The town is ideal for couples who prefer to walk comfortably, a backpack on their shoulders, and the camera ready to shoot at the right time.

To Oaxaca, you come for the adventure, to enjoy its gastronomy, traditions, and of course to visit tourist attractions such as Hierve el Agua and historical sites such as the Cathedral of Santo Domingo and Monte Albán, among others.

Mexico is home to some of the world’s best food and craft markets, but Oaxaca is the place to go if you want a truly artisanal, delicious experience. To truly experience life as a local, take a stroll in the Mercado Benito Juárez to see the piles of fresh produce, mole paste, and even spicy grasshoppers!

14. Holbox

When people think of Mexico, their first thought is usually Cancun, but there are a plethora of other honeymoon destinations in Mexico that are just as spectacular and less crowded!

Holbox is one of these hidden gems that many honeymooners miss out on. The tropical island of Holbox is located just north of Cancun and is surrounded by crystal-clear waters, and has that island laidback feel to it. There are no cars here, so you get to sit back and relax with your significant other, and maybe even see a few whale sharks.

At night, the waters glow blue due to the phytoplankton in the water. Have a unique honeymoon experience on Isla Holbox and go snorkeling in the bioluminescent waters at night!

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget

Are you looking for a refreshing tropical escape from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life? Whether craving a relaxing beach vacation to lounge, party or explore, it can be difficult to find the best tropical destinations on a budget.

Thankfully, there are plenty of exciting and affordable beach vacation spots that won’t break the bank. These top 5 tropical destinations on a budget offer pristine sandy beaches, affordable accommodations, budget-friendly restaurants, and an array of free attractions. Plus, they are only a few flight hours away from the US.

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget – Near the US

MEXICO:

Mexico has long been an affordable tropical destination for those operating on a budget, offering refreshing beaches and unique cenotes. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience beyond the luxury resorts, you will find plenty of fabulous vacation spots where you will stay within your budget.

This beautiful country offers so much more than laying out by the pool and sipping margaritas. With cheap international flights landing every hour, Mexico is one of the best tropical destinations on a budget for any traveler.

How to Experience Mexico on a Budget:

From snow-capped mountains to arid deserts, Mexico is home to a variety of climates. If you are planning on sticking to the tropical coastline, you can generally expect pleasant weather year-round. If you are looking to visit during the sunniest time of the year, make sure to avoid booking between May and September to avoid the rainy season—but if you are looking for the best rates, the rainy season may be your best bet.

There are plenty of amazing things to do in Mexico on a budget. One of the top outdoor activities to enjoy is swimming in a beautiful cenote. If you are planning your vacation to one of the best tropical destinations on a budget in the Yucatan Peninsula (Tulum, Valladolid, Merida, etc.), make sure to stop by some of these natural sinkholes. The cenotes were sacred to the ancient Mayans, and many said this significant civilization relied heavily on cenotes to advance the way they did.

If you are staying near the beach, grab your mask and snorkel and head over to some of the top snorkeling spots in Central America. While the best snorkeling destination in Mexico is Isla Mujeres, you will not be disappointed by what the rest of Mexico’s coastline has to offer.

Another excellent way to enjoy your tropical Mexico vacation on a budget is by exploring the historic temples, pyramids, and ruins. Hiking an ancient Aztec or Mayan ruin should be high on your Mexico bucket list and will typically cost you a nominal fee or nothing for a day of discovery.

BELIZE

While many refer to Belize as a more expensive destination in Central America, in recent years Belize has become one of the most accessible and suitable tropical destinations on a budget. This small country’s untouched beauty can be safely explored through vacation packages and meticulous planning.

Since not many people visit Belize, you can expect to discover its magical charm without hundreds of tourists surrounding you. From the colorful uninhabited rainforests to the quaint seaside towns, Belize has plenty more to offer than what meets the eye.

How to Experience Belize on a Budget:

You can find amazing deals on hotels, excursions, and Belize vacation packages between June and November. These months typically see a bit more rain than the others, but the weather in Belize (especially along the coast) remains fairly pleasant year-round.

The top thing to do during your time in Belize is to explore the Mayan ruins. Remnants of the fascinating Mayan civilization can be found throughout this beautiful country as Belize was the center of the Mundo Maya. If you are staying in Corozal, head over to Santa Rita or Cerros. If in Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, there are plenty of cheap boat trips to Lamanai and Altun Ha.

You haven’t truly experience Belize until you discover the pristine turquoise sea surrounding the cayes. Boasting some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean, you will not be disappointed by the amplitude of colors and clarity of the Caribbean Sea as you observe the tropical fish and marine wildlife. If you prefer to stick to the shore, Placencia is world-renown for its 17 miles of golden-sand beaches—perfect for relaxing hours of sunning, swimming, and strolling along the shore.

Finally, head inland to discover Belize’s vast jungle featuring cascading waterfalls and intertwining rivers. Whether you are visiting the Stann Creek, Cayo, or Toledo regions, you can join one of the trips or expect an excursion to the nearby jungle where you can explore the Rio Frio or Blue Creek waterfalls, canoe down the Mopan River, or zip-line through the jungle canopy.

COSTA RICA

The allure of Costa Rica extends far beyond your typical sunny beaches and expensive resorts. This beautiful city is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, with most of its expanse offered in lush forests. From quaint towns to tropical jungles, Costa Rica offers an array of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Although Costa Rica’s immense beauty can come with a high price tag, if you know which areas are more affordable or book a vacation package, you can avoid unnecessary costs and explore this beautiful country without breaking the bank. As one of the best tropical destinations on a budget, Costa Rica offers a vast array of affordable accommodation, delicious local foods, and low-cost activities.

How to Experience Costa Rica on a Budget:

Costa Rica is similar to Belize in that the best budget-friendly months to visit are during the rainy or green season, from May to November. These months tend to welcome a bit more rain but fewer crowds, leading to overall lower costs. Of course, it is also great to travel during all months of the year, offering outstanding weather and a tropical Caribbean breeze.

With over 20 national parks in Costa Rica, visiting any one of them is a great way to stay on budget. Each Costa Rican national park has something unique to offer, whether it’s a volcano, waterfall, beach, or something you never could have imagined. Visiting national parks is one of the best cheap things to do in Costa Rica during your vacation! While Cahuita National Park is free, the others will cost a nominal fee for entry to explore the entire day.

A great way to learn about the fascinating history of Costa Rica is by heading over to the country’s capital city San Jose and checking out some of the excellent museums. The Jade Museum, Gold Museum, and the National Museum are reasonably priced for you to explore during your time in San Jose. Afterward, make sure to stroll the streets and check out the local restaurants and artisanal shops.

Another way to easily cut back on expenses during your time in one of the best tropical destinations on a budget is hiking on your own. Guided walking tours can be more expensive since you will have to pay for a guide and transportation, but if you are renting a car, you can easily drive out to the nearby nature spots and hike on your own.

NICARAGUA

As the largest country in Central America, Nicaragua has long been known as one of the best tropical destinations on a budget. Frequently referred to as the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”, this unique country is home to an intricate volcanic terrain, lush cloud forests, historic colonial cities, and rugged coastlines.

While Nicaragua is gaining traction to become the next ‘hot spot’ in the Caribbean, few tourists have discovered this beautiful country, allowing it to remain one of the most budget-friendly spots in Central America. Whether visiting on a Nicaragua vacation package or exploring the city on your own, you will not regret spending your vacation in this beautiful country.

How to Experience Nicaragua on a Budget:

There are two distinct seasons in Nicaragua; the dry season running from November to April and the green season which falls between May and October. To avoid the crowds and peak prices, you should try to visit during the green season which welcomes more rain. The rainier months are also ideal for those looking for nice surfing conditions and deserted beaches to enjoy the waves.

Nature-lovers should prioritize discovering Rio San Juan during their time in this beautiful country. This historic waterway is a perfect stop for anyone looking to going kayaking, fishing, and watch wildlife during their time in one of the most affordable tropical destinations.

If you are looking to explore Nicaragua’s vast volcanic range, make sure to plan a trip to one of the country’s 19 volcanoes. The two peaks on Ometepe, Concepcion and Maderas, are two of the most popular day hikes offered in the country.
