What was once a U.S. Air Force surveillance tower in Panama is now an ecotourism icon. Raúl Arias de Para turned an instrument of war into a paradise for birdwatchers.

“When I was building the Canopy Tower there were moments of doubts about the eventual success of the enterprise, when those moments appeared I’d go up to the Observation Deck and feel the wind, hear the howlers, see the birds and my fears would vanish”.
– Raul Arias de Para

“Even though I had seen Jeff Gordon’s videotape and heard glowing reports about Panama’s Canopy Tower, I was not prepared for the moment when I climbed the steps from the dining room that first night and emerged onto the roof of this remodeled radar station. I felt as if I were coming up from the confines of a ship. Instead of an expanse of ocean, what stretched away in the darkness was tropical rainforest. The tops of 100-foot-high forest trees reached just to our height.”
– Victor Emanuel

We hope you have enjoyed your Panama Birding Tour with us!

In March 2023, we spent eleven days in Panama on a trip arranged by Anja from TropiQ Trips. At first, we were going to plan this trip on our own, but I found Anja on a Panama facebook group, and she planned us an amazing vacation.

The highlight of our trip was a three-night stay at the Mount Totumas Cloud Forest Lodge located in a remote area, 6200 feet up in the Panamanian mountains. Because of the higher elevation, we had cool morning temperatures and comfortable mid-day temps, so we were able to spend every minute of daylight outside hiking the many trails and enjoying the sights and sounds of the cloud forest.

We saw monkeys, twelve species of hummingbirds, and some of the most sought-after bird species in Panama with the help of their local guide, Reinaldo.

We also rented a car for half of the trip and visited the beach and went snorkelling at Boca Chica, as well as the volcanic town of El Valle de Anton before returning to Panama City. Metropolitan Park right in Panama City also had a surprising variety of wildlife. All of our accommodations, pick-ups/drop-offs, tours, car rental and a flight from Panama City to David happened seamlessly.

We can’t thank Anja enough for planning this trip. Panama is beautiful and we can’t wait to go back!
