A Relaxed 10-Day Costa Rica Itinerary (Your Family Will Love)

A Relaxed 10-Day Costa Rica Itinerary (Your Family Will Love)

Visiting Costa Rica is a great idea for a family vacation! The country is pretty safe, the food is amazing and the weather is perfect for exploring and playing outside. This 10-day Costa Rica itinerary gives you a balanced mix of all the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica offers many natural wonders: from rainforests to volcanoes, tropical beaches, and more. 10 days is a good length of time to visit Costa Rica with kids, as your itinerary will be filled with fun activities but won’t drag on too long.

When planning a trip to Costa Rica with kids, or any other Central America family vacation, consider staying at least 2 to 3 nights at each location. You will find that your kids are actually less exhausted when you slow travel. That is because they are less likely to get overwhelmed. Being constantly on the move is exhausting for everyone, but especially for kids. And it can be overwhelming on top of exhausting for little ones.

We have included boutique hotels that are able to host a family of 4 or 5 comfortably. You will not only find accommodations mentioned but also the room categories perfect for hosting a family.

With so much to discover in this Central American country, I’d recommend a minimum of 10 days. This will allow you to tick off the main activities without rushing or running on empty.

The following 10-day Costa Rica itinerary will give you some great ideas for your route. It is designed to provide a balanced mix of all the best of Costa Rica.

Want to get an idea about pricing? Check out our Costa Rica Family Fun tour that follows a very similar itinerary (with slightly different accommodations).

Check Out This Relaxed 10-Day Costa Rica Itinerary

Here is a sample 10-day Costa Rica itinerary that starts and ends in Costa Rica’s most popular airport in the capital San Jose. It takes you to the nearby Central Valley, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde with its cloud forests, and ends at Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, before returning to San Jose for your flight back home.
Each of these destinations is easy to get to. But they are very different in terms of landscapes and activities. Some have wildlife, rain forests, and cloud forests, and some have beaches. This slow travel itinerary is ideal for nature and beach-loving families.

Day 1: Arrive in San Jose & Transfer to the Central Valley

Individual arrival at the international airport where your driver awaits you. Private transfer of about 45 min to your first accommodation.

We suggest staying outside of the noisy capital and starting your Costa Rica Itinerary with a stay at the beautiful Xandari Resort. It is located in the Central Valley which is strikingly beautiful and disposes of a mild and dry climate all year round.

Recommended accommodation: Xandari Resort & Spa****, Star Villa (2 bedrooms)

The Xandari Resort is an inspiring oasis for art enthusiasts with a panoramic view of the Central Valley! The exclusive hotel features 24 individually designed villas and awes guests with a lively blend of color, art, and architecture.

The ecologically-run hotel complex with three swimming pools, a spa equipped with a jacuzzi, 5 private pavilions, a vegetable garden, and a botanical garden with trails as well various impressive art pieces is truly an insider tip for all those seeking a unique, offbeat experience.

I recommend the largest villa called Star Villa which measures 1,420 sq. ft. This generous villa is ideal for families. It includes two bedrooms, a salon and dining area, a full kitchen, and an office/study with internet, plus a private terrace and private garden. It captivates guests with its unique and creative ambiance. The spectacular view of the Central Valley, the garden, and the swimming pool are equally impressive.

Day 2: Explore and Relax in the Central Valley

Day at leisure.

Explore the beautiful hotel grounds or relax by the pool.

Day 3: Discover Arenal Volcano

Today your 10-day Costa Rica itinerary takes you to La Fortuna which is about 2.5 hours away. La Fortuna is a small town located northwest of the capital, San José. It is known as a gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park, comprising 2 volcanoes. Hot springs dot the foot of the volcano, on the thermal Tabacón River. The dormant Chato Volcano has a crater lake and rainforest trails leading to La Fortuna Waterfall, with its natural pool.

In the late afternoon join a 2-hour Night Walk:  When the sun sets across the park, a different side of the Costa Rican rainforest comes to life under the cover of darkness. Join a guided night walk through Arenal Natura Ecological Park for a chance to see all of the nocturnal creatures that call the park home. Explore the forested trails of this private nature reserve and listen as the jungle comes alive with the activity of nocturnal animals like sloths, armadillos, night birds, and more than 20 species of frogs!

Recommended accommodation: Arenal Paraiso Resort ***(*), 1 Villa

The hotel offers its visitors a variety of private trails and its own canopy tour. Apart from the amazing volcano view, the main attraction is the pool park: 14 pools of which 13 are thermo-mineral pools. Natural hot springs water is pumped up to the highest hill of the property and flows down to the main pool area.

The spacious Villas provide a living room and two bedrooms. The master bedroom is equipped with a King-size bed and a single sofa bed and features a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The second bedroom comes with a double bed and a single bed. In front of the living room, you also find a nice balcony with a beautiful view of the volcano.

Day 4: Caño Negro & Rio Frio Boat Tour

Caño Negro actually means “Black Canyon” in Spanish – but quite the contrary, Caño Negro should have been named “Green Canyon” thanks to its rich heritage when it comes to biodiversity. Wetlands, native and migratory birds, sloths, caimans, and a great variety of trees, flowers, and plants.

First, you drive to Los Chiles, one of the northernmost villages in Costa Rica. Once there, you will come on board a little boat, embarking on a sort of floating safari, passing through verdant pastures and forests. The knowledgeable guide will be very helpful pointing at different animals, trees, and incredible rarely-seen birds and will share their secrets with you.

Duration: approx. 9 hours

Day 5: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve & Coffee Tour

Off to the mountains, you go today – all the way to Monteverde – via road and boat crossing the Lago de Arenal. The transfer takes about 3h 30 min. There is a faster route without crossing Arenal Lake but this one is the more scenic route and I’d definitely recommend taking it. You will find out why once you are there and can thank me later!

Monteverde is home to one of the rarest habitats on Earth, the cloud forest, and an astounding variety of flora and fauna. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is unique from Costa Rica’s other rainforests, with a constant mist that looks like clouds and gives the forest its name.

Monteverde is a destination of bucket list experiences. Its ecosystems are home to some of the world’s rarest wildlife. In Costa Rica’s tropical highlands, there is seldom a dull day. Monteverde’s famous canopy tours include miles of cables, multiple platforms, and unimaginable views above the clouds.

Looking for a less exciting experience? Learn about the fascinating history of Costa Rican coffee and chocolate and try your hand at making some sweet sugar cane juice too. Or trot and gallop along scenic forest trails and up into mountains on horse-back.

Afternoon suggestion: Don Juan Coffee Tour

The Don Juan coffee tour is a real experience of family history and tradition. You will be invited to take a look into the world of coffee and be introduced to the history of coffee in Costa Rica and its socio-economic development. And you will learn a lot about chocolate as well as sugarcane, as both contribute to Costa Rican culture. So, this is 3 in 1 – living history.

Recommended accommodation: The Senda Monteverde ****, 1 Bungalow with 2 Junior Suites

The Senda Monteverde hotel is located between Santa Elena and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It is a luxury eco-hotel for adventurous travelers! Those who seek a peaceful, down-to-earth stay.

The 24 suites and rooms are dotted across the boutique mountain hotel in Contemporary Mountain Bungalows. Some are positioned on hilltops with incredible views all the way to the Gulf of Nicoya. Others enjoy amazing windows into the cloud forests.

You will have all the privacy, comforts, and essentials you’d expect from a luxury mountain lodge.

Junior Suites are 1-bedroom suites with 44sq.m (475sq.ft) of living space. Junior Suites can accommodate a max. of 2 adults + 1 or 2 small children. Sleeping Arrangement: King-sized bed and a twin day bed in the living area. One Full Bathroom. Minibar & living area with sofa, table & chairs.

Junior Suites have a cozy, open-air terrace. Each stand-alone bungalow features two Junior Suites

Day 6: Monteverde Cloud Forest Adventures: Ziplining and Suspension Bridges

Today you will explore some of the many activities Monteverde has to offer! An adventure package for a full day of experiences with amazing views that you won’t forget. You will be able to soar through the mountains at incredible speed, heights, and lengths on the unmatched ziplines. Explore the tropical forest from a bird’s eye view on the aerial tram. Get to discover the secrets of nature in hanging bridges and trails guided expedition.

Highlights

  • 8 ziplines, 6 hanging bridges, and a tramway over the forest
  • Unmatched views of the Arenal Volcano, Nicoya Gulf, and more
  • Astounding ziplines that go up to 328ft in height and 2460ft in length and impressive speeds that go up to 43.5mph.
  • Mountain to mountain and canyon crossing ziplines
  • Professional certified braking systems on ziplines
  • No hands-on cable (always on the pulley)
  • Hanging Bridges Trail length: 1.5mi
  • Hanging Bridges: 6 with distances up to 774ft and heights up to 165ft
  • Admire primary and secondary forests with varying vegetation on our hanging bridges and trails walk

7. Be Active or Relax at Nosara Beach

Today you will travel to the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica on a private transfer of about 5 hrs. Defined by its worries-by-the-wayside attitude and shorelines untainted by commercialism, Nosara is a small town famous for its yoga and surf. We want you to relax at the end of your 10-day Costa Rica itinerary so suggest staying here for 3 nights for a relaxed end of your Costa Rica family vacation.

Many people know it as “No shoes, no shirt, Nosara,” which aptly sums things up. Located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste region, the traditional village of Nosara sits six kilometers inland, although the beaches are the biggest draw.

For decades, Nosara has been protected by the national park system, in addition to longstanding efforts of local citizens to ensure that this unspoiled forest and beach destination remains as such. Nosara has three different beaches: Playa Guiones, Playa Nosara and Playa Pelada.

Visitors rave about the ATV and horseback riding tours. Along the way, you can marvel at the roaring waterfall and try coconut water on the beach. Or try boogie boarding or family-friendly paddle boarding.

Feel the real culture and support the locals at nearby restaurants. Within the area, you can find a wide variety of restaurants, including romantic hotspots meant for couples as well as kid-friendly locales serving up sandwiches and beverages.

Recommended accommodation: Olas Verdes Boutique Hotel ***(*) – 2-Bedroom Beach Apartment

Olas Verdes Hotel is an all-suite boutique hotel, just a short walk through the forest to Playa Guiones. Wake up with the waves and stay in comfort, while enjoying in-house surf and yoga lessons. Offering casual luxury, Olas Verdes Hotel has the best location to explore the towns of Guiones and Nosara. Restaurants, shops and massages are a fun and easy bicycle ride away. Free Wi-Fi, beach cruisers and laundry. El Manglar restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Olas Verdes Hotel is a proud partner of the Safari Surf School. Safari provides fun, easy-going lessons delivered by highly qualified professional staff.

Stay in one of the 2-Bedroom Beach Apartments, which are two Luxury Suites next to each other and sharing the building access (levels one and two, no connecting door). That means each Beach Apartment has 2 living rooms, 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. The downstairs living room has a pull-out sofa bed, mini-fridge, coffee maker, toaster oven, large ceiling fan and wet bar, while the upstairs living room has a sofa, microwave oven, full-size fridge/freezer, breakfast area, and a large ceiling fan.
Each bedroom has a queen size bed and a single bed, closet, desk, safe box, large ceiling fan and air conditioning. Total area is approximately 1,050 sq. feet.

8. Be Active or relax at the beach in Nosara

Day at leisure to enjoy the hotel, pool, beach, or activities.

9. Be Active or relax at the beach in Nosara

Day at leisure to enjoy the hotel, pool, beach, or activities.

10. Depart to the airport

During the course of the day 5 ½ -hour private transfer to the international airport near San Jose.

15 Exciting Things To Do In The Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in 2025

15 Exciting Things To Do In The Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in 2025

The Yucatán Peninsula separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea, encompassing 3 Mexican states, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Campeche, plus portions of Belize and Guatemala. It is known for its tropical rainforests, vibrant colonial cities, as well as its being the home of the ancient Maya people. Whether you are searching for beautiful white-sand beaches to relax on or seeking out thrilling adventure, there is nowhere quite like the Yucatan Peninsula. No wonder people from all over the globe head to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula every year. Check out our 15 exciting things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico!

15 Exciting Things to Do in Yucatan, Mexico

1. Chichen Itza

Probably the epitome of Maya architecture, in its 12th-century heyday Chichén Itzá was a sacred and ceremonial place, and a trading hub. In a site full of wonders and intriguing accounts of Maya customs, the ball court is impressive. In this vast, stone-walled space open to the sky, Maya men played a game of life or death. It’s believed that the captain of the victorious team would be sacrificed to the gods. Don’t miss the Temple of the Warriors, a long platform of intricately carved columns. Some are intact, others crumbling.

Other Mayan sites include Ek Balam, noted for well-preserved sculptures, and Uxmal, with its intricate carved facades.

2. Cenote Ik-Kil

Most people visiting the historical Chitzen Itza pyramids during a Mexico tour also make a stop at the stunning Ik Kil cenote. It is just a short 10-minute drive from the pyramids and the perfect place to cool off in its refreshing deep blue water.

The Ik Kil cenote backdrop is beautiful with a wide opening into the sky, a stairwell leading down to it and lush jungle vines winding all around it. Make sure to go super early if you want to beat the crowds.

3. Izamal

Izamal is a small, charming, and beautiful colonial town in the center of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is about 1 hour east of Merida. The town has a magical and peaceful atmosphere, and the cobblestone streets are lined with historic colonial buildings painted in a beautiful and eye-catching mustard yellow color.

In the center of town is the eye-catching Convento de San Antonio de Padua. Built in 1561 on the site of a destroyed Maya temple, it is one of the oldest Catholic monasteries in the Americas and its outdoor atrium is the second largest in the world (after the Vatican). Izamal is an official Mexican Pueblo Mágico, Magical Town.

4. Merida

To fully experience the culture and history of the peninsula, go to Merida, the capital of the Yucatan state. With an interesting mix of Mayan and colonial culture, the city is encircled by ancient temples, crumbling ruins, sacred cenotes, and colorful mansions.

Flanked by gorgeous, pastel-colored buildings and the historic city cathedral, the Plaza Grande is one of the most attractive plazas in Merida. The plaza is also often a hive of activity – which is all part of its charm. Witness the daily Mexican flag raising and lowering ceremony, explore the bustling craft market on Sundays, and enjoy the animated live music performances held here almost every night.

Make sure to check out the brightly woven hammocks. Hammock weaving has been a tradition on the peninsula for more than 700 years.

Lovingly nicknamed ‘the White City’ after its iconic whitewashed buildings, Merida is a must among the things to do in the Yucatan Peninsula and one of the highlights of Mexico.

5. Las Coloradas

Mexico is replete with incredible scenic wonders, but few sights are as unique and breathtaking as the pink lakes in Quintana Roo.

Known locally as Las Coloradas (“blush red”), the cotton-candy-colored lakes attract tourists from all across the world. The lakes are pink due to the abundance of red and pink marine life including red algae, brine shrimp, and plankton – all of which thrive in water with high salt content. The man-made lakes are extremely shallow, and the marine life becomes highly concentrated as the saltwater evaporates. Las Coloradas has been a salt mining community for thousands of years, going back to the ancient Maya.

If you find yourself visiting the Yucatan peninsula, add Las Coloradas to your list of things to do.

6. Isla Holbox

Holbox Island is a small piece of heaven on earth on the Yucatan Peninsula, northwest of Cancun, Mexico. Only 26 miles long and one mile wide, the island is comprised of 22 miles of white and coral sand beach. It is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico by a shallow lagoon which gives sanctuary to thousands of flamingos, pelicans, and other exotic birds and creatures.

During the months of June and September, you cannot miss the biggest congregation of whale sharks that come to measure up to 50 feet in length. Its docility allows you to swim on the side of these giants for an unforgettable experience.

The island is a 40-minute ferry ride off the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula that Cancun calls home. Isla Holbox is intimate, romantic, and definitely wild. Here people don’t drive cars, they use golf carts and beach cruisers.

7. Valladolid

Yucatán’s third-largest city is famous for its quiet streets and sun-splashed pastel walls. The provincial town makes a great hub for visits to Río Lagartos, Chichén Itzá, Ek’ Balam, and a number of nearby cenotes.

Valladolid resides at that magic point where there’s plenty to do, yet it still feels small, manageable, and affordable. Go into the colonial city built atop ancient grounds to view the colorful architecture including the San Gervasio Church.

Make sure to try some of the great eats at the restaurants situated throughout the area.

8. Coba Ruins

Visit the Coba Ruins with the highest pyramid in Mexico. It is one of the few Mayan pyramids you can still climb and is 138 feet tall with 120 stone steps.

Coba is different from the other archaeological big sites in Yucatan. It is situated by four natural lakes, which is a rare sight in the Yucatan. Furthermore, it is not as excavated nor reconstructed as Chichen Itza or Tulum. Coba still has a number of big structures covered with the growth of the jungle, making it a wild place that truly triggers your imagination. It is not overrun with tourists and if you’re early you might be all by yourself with only birds, monkeys, and the dense jungle to accompany you.

Coba is a short drive from Playa del Carmen.

9. Cozumel Island

I loved exploring Cozumel by rental car (jeep) so definitely recommend you include it in your list of top things to do in the Yucatan.

Cozumel is the largest island in the Mexican Caribbean. It is an authentic paradise in the middle of the sea with white beaches, beautiful sunsets, and world-famous for its coral reefs. Cozumel is a destination of adventure and relaxation. Go here to snorkel and scuba dive or simply hike through the luscious green jungle areas.

The city of San Miguel has a laid-back vibe, and there are stunning stretches of untouched nature to be found along the eastern and southern shores.

The island can be reached by ferry from Playa del Carmen.

10. Akumal Beach

If you’re infatuated with sea turtles, make your way to Akumal Beach to swim in the shallow waters where three different varieties of sea turtles live. White sand beaches, palm trees, and awesome snorkeling await! You can literally snorkel right off the beach without a guide or need to look very far.

Beware: The small bay at Akumal has a sandy bottom comprised of very fine sand. It gets stirred up as the day goes on, cutting visibility significantly. When the tour groups start arriving in the mid-morning, the bottom can get stirred up very quickly. Try getting there early.

Akumal is about half-way between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

11. Xel-Há Park

Discover one of the best theme parks in the Riviera Maya: Xel-Há.

Enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience where snorkel, food, and beverages are included. There is something special for every taste. Immerse yourself in amazing cenotes, lagoons, and an inlet. Enjoy a spa, water zip-lines, slides, high jumps, and many other activities that you will only find at Xel-Há.

The park is part of Xcaret Experiencias Group which also owns the Xplor Park, Xcaret Park, and Xenses Park.

12. Mayan Ruins of Tulum

You can’t visit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula without seeing the Mayan Ruins of Tulum. They are considered by many as the most beautiful of the Mayan Ruins sites around Cancun and part of most Mexico guided tours.

The 13th-century, walled Mayan archaeological site at Tulum National Park overlooks the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was built to be a fortress. It incorporates the clifftop Castillo, built as a watchtower, and the Templo de las Pinturas, with a partially restored mural.

The ruins of Tulum are located 100 miles to the south of Playa del Carmen.

13. Tulum

If you need to relax for a day or two, visit Tulum for sunbathing and yoga on the beach. Tulum’s spectacular coastline – with all its confectioner-sugar sands, cobalt water, and balmy breezes – makes it one of the top beaches in Mexico. There’s also excellent cave and cavern diving, fun cenotes, and a variety of lodgings and restaurants to fit every budget.

Tulum is the fastest-growing vacation destination in the area.

14. Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

Don’t miss the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, ‘the place where the sky is born’. It is massive, covering over 2,000 square miles, from tropical forests inland to coral reefs offshore. The tropical forests are home to charismatic mammals such as Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot, and Central American Tapir. The property also provides habitat for a large number of resident and migratory bird species. There is a great diversity of marine life, including the West Indian Manatee, four species of nesting marine turtles, and hundreds of fish species.

Explore this pristine slice of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula by boating through spectacular inlets, on snorkeling trips, birdwatching tours, or via guided hikes deep into the wilderness.

15. Bacalar Lagoon

Last but not least: Include a visit to the Bacalar Lagoon on your list of things to do in the Yucatan. Also known as “The lagoon of the 7 colors” this is one of the most beautiful places in the region.

Bacalar is an amazing lake in the southern tip of Quintana Roo State. It is called the lagoon of seven colors because of the white sandy bottom that gives the effect of having so many shades of blue. This is a fresh water lake feed by underground cenotes, but it does look like the ocean. The lake is about 34 miles from tip to tip and 1.2 miles at its widest point. This size makes it a huge place to visit and explore.

The town of Bacalar was declared a Pueblo Magico since it is such a unique place. Bacalar Lagoon is also the second largest natural body of fresh water in Mexico and without question should be on your list of places to visit in the Yucatan Peninsula

*****

 Conclusion:

The Yucatan Peninsula is one of the most culturally and ecologically rich regions in the world. A vast variety of flora and fauna can be found in the biosphere reserves, the lakes, and the coral reefs. At the same time, Mexico’s Mayan culture is present in the many archeological sites waiting to be explored.

From the stunning landscape to the vibrant culture, the Yucatan has a little something for everyone.

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2025 Guide with Photos

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2025 Guide with Photos

Panama is definitely one of the most beautiful countries worldwide. It has a rich history, fascinating culture, and a variety of historic sites including the famous Panama Canal. But Panama has so much more to offer. Its beaches are some of the best in the world and one of the reasons that Panama is the perfect vacation destination for you and your family. With coastline and islands along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Panama is home to some fantastic beaches. We have chosen the best beaches in Panama for you.

The beaches along Panama’s Pacific Coast are mainly long and wide with large waves, ideal for surfing. Meanwhile, the Caribbean side offers smaller beaches with calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The white-sand beaches and turquoise waters here rival the best of the Bahamas.

Having lived and worked in tourism in Panama for several years, I definitely have my favorite beaches. Here are some of the best beaches in Panama:

Best Caribbean Beaches in Panama

1. Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)

Guna Yala (San Blas Islands) may well be the best-kept secret in the Caribbean, although the beaches of San Blas have often been described as some of the best in the world. The development has been limited because the archipelago is controlled by the indigenous Guna tribe.
There is a total commitment to maintaining a wonderful natural environment. The sands are lovely and white and the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling. Scuba diving is not allowed. Accommodation is eco-friendly and mostly rustic but that’s the charm of this “paradise on earth” and my all-time favorite place.

The San Blas Islands are truly an amazing place to visit! The small islands with unspoiled beauty, turquoise water, white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, are absolutely stunning. The beaches in Guna Yala are without a doubt the best beaches in Panama and a visit here is the experience of a lifetime.

To get there, you can either book jeep transfers, oftentimes as a package that includes a couple of overnights, from Panama City or it is a short 30-minute flight from Panama City’s domestic airport.

2. Cayos Zapatillas (Bocas del Toro)

Bocas del Toro is part mainland and part archipelago and located right on the border with neighboring Costa Rica. The beaches of Bocas are the quintessential Caribbean … turquoise waters and white sands, coconuts growing from a fringe of bright green palms. Although I must caution you: If you visit the San Blas Islands first, not much else in Panama can compare to those beaches.

That being said the Zapatillas islands which are two idyllic mangrove islands in Bocas del Toro’s Bastimentos Island National Marine Park definitely belong to the best beaches in Panama. These islands are like something off a postcard. They have white-sand beaches, tropical forests, palm trees hanging over the turquoise Caribbean Sea, and coral gardens. The water is partly sheltered by a barrier reef and guarantees fine snorkeling. You may see nurse sharks and moray eels as well as much colorful fish. The uninhabited islands are an important nesting site for endangered sea turtles.

The Zapatillas islands can be best reached on a day tour offered by the many agencies in Bocas town, or ask us to organize a private boat tour for you and your family.

3. Red Frog Beach – Bocas del Toro

Next on our list of the best beaches in Panama is the most well-known of Bocas del Toro’s beaches, Red Frog Beach. It is located on Bastimentos Island and takes its name from the little red frogs that scramble along the shores. Red Frog Beach has a naturally beautiful setting, with lush vegetation just behind the beach. Sloths and monkeys live in the trees, while the marine life offshore is colorful and impressive.

There is usually a breeze and the waves in the clear blue waters make it a great spot for surfing. But beware! This beauty can have deadly riptides and dangerous currents.

The beach can be reached by water taxi from Colon Island, followed by a jungle hike to the other side of Bastimentos Island.

4. Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) – Bocas del Toro

Located near the Boca del Drago beach on Bocas’ main island, Isla Colon. Colorful starfishes can often be found in the clear blue waters here, hence the name (do no pick them up please). The palm trees provide a further contrast in color and give much-needed shade as well. You can rent kayaks, floating chairs, and water bikes by the hour to get you to the mangroves.

The beach is not very wide here but the water is calm and there is only a gentle slope into the water. Starfish Beach is clearly one of the most beautiful and swimmable beaches in the Bocas area, and one of the best beaches in all of Panama. It is a perfect place to visit on a Panama family vacation, especially for parents with small kids. Just avoid weekends when a lot of locals come here and it can get busy and loud. There are a couple of small restaurants close by.

You can visit Starfish Beach as part of an organized boat tour or take a bus or taxi from Bocas town to Boca del Drago and walk from there.

5. Isla Gamez and Isla Bolaños – Chiriqui province

Chiriquí province, so far mostly known as a mountain destination, has recently become known also as a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales can be found here.

The picturesque islands of Gamez and Bolaños are part of the Marine National Park in the Gulf of Chiriqui. Bolaños and Gamez both have amazing white sand beaches and lush vegetation with swaying palm trees. You will be able to see lots of colorful fish and turtles in its crystal clear waters. These islands are the perfect place to relax, snorkel, and just enjoy with family and friends.

Both are virgin islands and you might not see another soul all day. Make sure to bring everything you need with you.

Nearby Boca Chica acts as the gateway to both the Gulf of Chiriquí National Park and its islands. The natural beauty of this place is impressive, but it is still off-the-radar for most tourists.

The islands can be reached on a boat tour from Boca Chica which is about 1 hr drive from Panama’s second-biggest city, David.

6. Las Lajas – Chiriqui province

Las Lajas is a town located near the city of David in the Chiriquí province. It has one of the best beaches in Panama but remains relatively undiscovered. This little-known beach stretches for over 9 miles, and you can be completely alone walking for miles without seeing a soul.

Las Lajas beach is also popular because of the friendly waters and lack of strong waves. Although, on occasion, the waves can be favorable for bodyboarding or even surfing when the tides are right. On weekends, the beach brings many visitors to its brownish sands lined with palm trees.

Las Lajas Beach is best reached by rental car or on a self-drive tour as this can be an easy stop on your itinerary. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from David, Panama’s second-biggest city, or a 6-hour drive from Panama City.

7. Isla Coiba – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Isla Coiba, the largest island in Central America, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park. The island’s unspoiled white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and diverse wildlife attract travelers from around the world. The protected waters of Coiba Island offer fantastic spots for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Offshore, Granito de Oro is a small island with a beach and coral reef. In the water, you may see hammerhead sharks, whales, and manta rays, as well as other colorful marine life. It is often called “the Galapagos of Central America”. Why you’ve never heard of it? The former penal colony remains a Panama off-the-beaten-path destination due to its remote location and the restrictions of the nature reserve.

Most travelers arrive via an organized snorkel or dive tour leaving from Santa Catalina on the mainland. It’s not the easiest or cheapest place to get to, but so worth it. It is truly an amazing place.

8. Santa Catalina – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Until a few years ago, Santa Catalina was a tiny and mellow fishing village that saw virtually no visitors outside of Panamanian surfers. Santa Catalina’s somewhat remote location has kept Santa Catalina devoid of large tourist crowds, but the word is out, and people are starting to show up.

Located along the Pacific Ocean in the Veraguas province, it has some of the most consistent surf in the country and is the starting point for trips to Isla Coiba (see above). La Punta in Santa Catalina is the most popular surf break for the gurus. Playa El Estero is the perfect spot for beginner surfers with its small to medium-sized rolling waves. But even if you don’t surf, you will enjoy Santa Catalina’s beaches and laid-back vibe.

Santa Catalina is best reached by rental car from Panama City which is about 5 hours away or on a self-drive tour. There is no gas station, no ATM, no big grocery store in the village so come prepared.

9. Cambutal – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Cambutal is a laid-back beach town on the southern Azuero Peninsula. Mostly popular with surfers and deep-sea anglers, its attractive coastline will appeal to almost everyone. It is still an off-the-beaten-path destination. And although the first hotels have opened up in recent years, the area still lacks many facilities.

Cambutal’s dark sand beach is lovely and is surrounded by one of the peninsula’s few coastal forests.

Surfing is still a major reason that many travelers come here as the waves are nice and uncrowded. The fishing at Playa Cambutal is also quite good as the seafloor dives steeply just beyond the coastline, creating an area that’s ideal for large fish, including tuna, marlin, and grouper.

Aside from lounging along the beach, other activities in Playa Cambutal include ocean kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking. Playa Cambutal is also close to Cerro Hoya National Park. Although very remote, this park is one of the richest (and most untouched) parks in all of Panama. It’s also one of the last habitats for the endangered scarlet macaw in Panama.

Cambutal is about a 6-hour drive from Panama City and a good hour from Playa Venao. I’d recommend visiting it by rental car or on a self-drive tour.

10. Playa Venao – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Venao is one of the most beautiful and best beaches in Panama, stretching over two and a half miles of beautiful shoreline, and is seldom crowded. It is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay known for consistent waves, black sand beach, outdoor activities, comfortable accommodation, great food, and vibrant nightlife.

Playa Venao has become a hot destination for locals and overseas tourists alike. Together with Santa Catalina, it is famous for having the best surfing in Panama. Playa Venao offers consistent breaking waves for all skill levels, from beginner to professional.

But the area also offers many other recreational activities such as kite surfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, diving, snorkeling, hiking, and whale watching. Playa Los Destiladores is another beautiful beach close to the cute and traditional village of Pedasi.

Venao is located about 5.5 hrs drive from Panama City and can be easiest reached by rental car or as part of a self-drive tour.

11. Isla Iguana – Azuero Peninsula

Isla Iguana offers the only white-sand beach on the Azuero Peninsula, together with beautiful crystal clear waters. It is a secluded paradise, considered a wildlife refuge, inhabited only by rare birds, giant lizards (“iguana in Spanish”), and purple and red crabs.

The island is located off the shore of Pedasi and only accessible by boat. Isla Iguana is a snorkeling and diving paradise as it has the biggest area of well-preserved coral reefs in the Gulf of Panama with 14 different coral species, more than 350 tropical fishes, and over 200 species of invertebrates. In addition, several species of marine turtle come to the island to lay their eggs from April to September and humpback whales swim around these waters from June to November to mate.

This island offers two beaches to choose from: El Cirial is the main and larger beach. It has calm waves and is perfect to soak up the sun and take a nice swim in the amazing waters. El Faro is smaller and more secluded. It has stronger currents but is more popular for snorkeling. There is a hiking trail you can follow to go from one beach to the other.

The island can be reached from picturesque Pedasi town in Los Santos province. Make your way to nearby Playa Arenal and arrange with local fishermen to give you a return boat ride to Isla Iguana.

12. Isla Contadora – Pearl Islands (Islas Perlas)

Located 30 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama, Isla Contadora is the most developed place in the Pearl Islands (“Las Perlas”). The island is a popular beach escape for those wanting a break from Panama City. Contadora combines nature with sophistication; white-sand beaches and pelicans with exclusive villas and a few boutique hotels. But don’t expect a lot of restaurants or nightlife here. The island is rather quiet and can sometimes even feel deserted.

There are eleven beaches on the island. The most well-known might be Playa de las Suecas (translates to Beach of the Swedish), a pristine, charming, semi-hidden spot that also happens to be Panama’s only nude beach. Other popular beaches include Playa Galeón, Playa Cacique, and Playa Larga. For a true virgin island experience, it is also possible to take a boat to one of the archipelago’s uninhabited islands and beaches.

The water that surrounds Isla Contadora is ideal for different water activities. Diving and snorkeling are among the most popular. The island is only half a square mile so it’s easy to get everywhere. Transportation is largely limited to golf-carts, four-wheelers, scooters, and bicycles, all of which can be rented for the day. Or you can easily walk to many of the beautiful beaches.

To get to Isla Contadora, you can fly from Panama City in just 20 minutes or else take a rather costly but scenic 2-hour ferry, hence it is a bit far and expensive for a day tour.

 Conclusion:

Skirting both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and with thousands of islands, Panama is home to some of the world’s best beaches. 7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

b
M

Even though Panama is mostly known for its famous Canal it has so much more to offer and does not need to be shy in comparison with other Latin American tourist destinations. In this post, we will look at some of the amazing highlights of Panama.

Panama has long been in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Costa Rica but that is slowly changing. One of the main reasons being the lower number of tourists that make Panama a more attractive destination. And Panama can easily keep up with Costa Rica with its breathtakingly beautiful Caribbean and Pacific islands, untouched rainforests, award-winning coffee farms, and its bustling metropolis Panama City. Find out more about the best beaches in Panama!

Panama is also very close to my heart as I spent a few years working and living in this amazing little country that is so full of energy. And this is actually where I met my husband. Read on to find out exactly where!

Let’s look at some of the best places to visit in Panama.

Here are our Highlights of Panama:

1. Central America´s most attractive capital Panama City & its famous canal

For most of you, Panama City will be your port of entry into the country. The city’s impressive skyline reminds us of Miami or New York and in the last few years, many hotels have opened in high-rise buildings and offer breathtaking views!

Sights of Panama City

Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo is the historic center and also the hippest and most elegant part.

Many Colonial buildings are being restored to their original glory and often house beautiful courtyards, interesting galleries, restaurants or bars – often with a rooftop from where you can enjoy the skyline of the modern city.

Most of the city´s vibrating nightlife takes place here too. Not far from here is the Causeway Amador which connects four small islands offshore. A palm-lined road runs the length of the causeway, with benches, parks, and a path for bicycling and jogging alongside.

The ruins of Panama Viejo are the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country. It is located in the suburbs of the modern city. Together with the historic Casco Antiguo, it has been a World Heritage Site since 1997.

The famous Panama Canal

And last but not least the famous Panama Canal: A visit to what is often called “The Eighth Wonder of the World” is a must. You can either visit the famous Miraflores Visitor Center and Locks located a few minutes outside of the city where you will be able to watch the huge ships and freighters pass, often with just a few inches on both sides, through the locks.

Another option is to book a partial or complete transit through the Panama Canal on a tourist boat.

The city is a great starting point for day tours from Panama City.

You can visit indigenous tribes, go hiking or bird watching. Or you can board the train along the Panama Canal which takes you to Colón on the Atlantic side and returns in the late afternoon – it runs only Monday to Friday and not on holidays. Be careful: Colón is not a safe place.

2. The breathtakingly beautiful San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) – my personal highlight of Panama

My personal favorite of the highlights of Panama!! These islands are a real tropical paradise that cannot be missed. They are located on the Caribbean coast of Panama and stretch all the way to Colombia. Home to the indigenous Guna tribe, you actually pay an entry fee to visit their territory or “comarca”, the 365 islands are a must-visit if you are willing to play it rough for a few nights.

Accommodation is rather basic and often backpacker-style with shared bathrooms. And who would have thought that exactly on one of these dreamlike islands is where I met my now-husband!

Trips are usually sold as a package including transportation, overnights and full pension as most islands have no restaurants or shops. Make sure to bring your original passport (being so close to Colombia you will pass border patrol) and everything else you need for your stay including small change for optional tours or souvenirs such as the beautiful hand-made molas.

Another option is to go sailing and explore the islands that way – either on a private sailing boat or shared with a small group of international travelers.

3. Whale watching in the Pearl Islands

The Pearl Islands of Panama is an archipelago that covers around 250 small islands of which most are uninhabited.

The locals call the islands Islas de las Perlas, a name that dates back from Spanish colonial times. The Spanish Conquistadors discovered the islands in 1503 and gave the Islands its name due to the great amounts of pearls found on them.

The islands are nowadays most famous for their spectacular white-sand deserted beaches and for whale watching. Did you know that Panama is the only place in the world where Humpback whales from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres come to breed and give birth?

Thousands of Humpbacks migrate northwards from their summer feeding grounds around Antarctica, arriving in the region from July through September/October.

They breed and give birth to their calves in the warm, shallow and safe waters that can be found in Panama just a few miles off-shore from Panama City and along the entire Pacific coast. The chance to see whales here is over 95%!

Interesting for tourists is mainly the small and sleepy Contadora Island which holds a few 2 to 3-star hotel options. The island can be easily reached from Panama City, either by a 2-hour ferry ride or a 25-minute flight.

4. The Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro

Another one of my personal favorites of Panama’s highlights is the archipelago of “Bocas,” located close to the border to Costa Rica on the Caribbean side of Panama. It can be reached by plane (from Panama City or San José / Costa Rica) or by a 30-minute water taxi ride from the mainland towns of Almirante or Chiriqui Grande.

The main island, Colón (Spanish for Columbus), houses most hotels, restaurants, and bars.

If you prefer a quieter experience, check out the B&Bs at nearby Playa Bluff Beach or on the neighboring islands of Bastimentos, Carenero, or Cristobal. Most Bocas del Toro hotels are not located near a swimming beach due to the many mangroves in the area.

Bocas is rather considered an active beach vacation as most times you are required to take a water taxi to the different islands and beaches. You can book excursions with most hotels or in Bocas town, or we can include them in your Panama vacation package.

Another option is to rent bicycles, kayaks, quads, or SUPs for a more active experience. The islands have it all: relax quietly or party all day long!

We also visit the islands of Bocas del Toro on our Best of Panama tour which visits many of Panama’s highlights.

5. Local life on the Azuero Peninsula

Often called the “cradle of Panama’s culture” you will surely get to know more about Panamanian traditions with a visit to the Azuero Peninsula. Here, life is slow and people are friendly. The region is famous for religious festivals dating back to Spanish colonial times and it also houses Panama’s best Carnival celebration in Chitré and Las Tablas.

Around the small town of Pedasí, you will find white-sanded beaches, diving, sport-fishing, and horse-back riding.

Nearby Playa Venao is known for its world-class surfing. Thousands of sea turtles can be viewed both nesting and hatching on Isla Cañas, a Wildlife Reserve, not far from Venao. Four of the eight known turtle species in Panama nest here.

Turtle hatching can be observed July-November. A visit to the island Isla Iguana is a must, especially in the whale-watching season from July to October. It can be easily reached by boat from Playa Arenal. Watching some of the gigantic humpback whales breach, would surely make your highlights of Panama list.

Here, you find a nice sheltered beach with great snorkeling and the giant iguanas that gave the place its name. The region around Pedasi, and the Azuero Peninsula in general, is becoming increasingly popular with retired expats!

6. Panama’s premier mountain destination and adventure sports capital: Boquete

Located in the Chiriquí province, close to the border with Costa Rica, it offers not only spectacular mountain scenery with a lush flora and fauna, award-winning coffee farms and a spring-like climate but also a great variety of outdoor adventure that ranges from river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, canopy and suspension bridge tours to relaxed coffee tours, golf and bird-watching tours.

Active travelers can climb the Baru Volcano, an inactive volcano which towers over the area with majestic views.

The locals in Boquete are friendly, the town is quaint and easy to get around in and is frequently selected as one of the best places in the world to retire.

7. The up-and-coming destination of Boca Chica

In Chiriquí National Marine Park, near the Costa Rican border, lies a stunning new coast and island destination known as Boca Chica. It offers pristine ocean views, lush vegetation and picturesque uninhabited islands of white sand and swaying palms.

Chiriquí province, famous as a mountain destination, is now also a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, thick majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales are there for your viewing pleasure.

Just starting to develop as a destination it already has several very attractive lodgings options, from a family-owned boutique hotel to a luxurious private island retreat.

*****

Conclusion:

Panama is an amazing place. With its breathtakingly beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and its Highlands full of adventure sports options, the tiny country can be as adventurous or as chilled as you want it to be.

Our Panama Self-Drive Tour “Between Two Oceans” is only one of the options to explore most of the highlights of Panama, but it is probably my personal favorite!

5 Reasons to Travel to Central America in 2025

5 Reasons to Travel to Central America in 2025

Central America, nestled between North and South America, is a gem waiting to be discovered, packed with activities and sights for every traveler. It boasts year-round tropical weather, a treasure trove of history, and a blend of cultures that is as inviting as it is intriguing. Plus, its natural beauty is nothing short of breathtaking, with vibrant cities adding to its appeal.

You’ll have the chance to dive into the world of ancient civilizations, explore lush rainforests, and marvel at stunning architecture. If you’re looking to unwind, the beaches along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts are perfect for relaxation. Adventure seekers can witness the power of majestic volcanoes, while food enthusiasts can indulge in mouthwatering local cuisine. There’s truly something for everyone.

So, here are 5 reasons to travel to Central America next year:

5 Reasons to Travel to Central America This Year

1. You’ll See Spectacular Natural Wonders

Central America is a very diverse region, just perfect for nature lovers. The Caribbean Sea is home to hundreds of interesting islands, offering different possibilities and adventures.

The biodiversity in Central America is unparalleled, with numerous national parks and reserves protecting its unique wildlife and habitats. Birdwatchers will be in heaven with the chance to spot hundreds of bird species, including the resplendent quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala. Similarly, the region’s marine life is vibrant and diverse, providing excellent opportunities for snorkeling and diving.

If you’re looking for a mixture of a relaxing, laid-back holiday and adventurous vacation, a road trip or self-drive tour in Costa Rica may be the perfect choice for you. This country has beautiful white-sand beaches and unique wildlife that you can explore in its natural habitat – from sea turtles to various monkey species.

Adrenalin seekers will also find Central America interesting. You can get your heart racing by joining organized hiking tours around volcanic lagoons. Or, you could spend a night camping or maybe glamping right next to an active volcano.

Or how about sailing the spectacular Caribbean islands of San Blas (Guna Yala) in Panama?

2. Discover Ancient Cultures

Central America has a rich history and traditions. It was influenced by the Spanish, African, and indigenous populations. This region is home to hundreds of ancient Mayan ruins. The Mayan civilization left some great cities for future generations to explore.

To fully immerse yourself in the ancient cultures of Central America, consider participating in cultural workshops or guided tours led by local experts. These experiences provide deeper insights into the customs, traditions, and ways of life of the indigenous communities. You might learn to weave traditional textiles, participate in ancient ceremonies, or even cook traditional dishes, creating a more meaningful and enriching travel experience.

Nowadays, the most popular ruins you can visit across the region are:
● Chichen Itza – stone structures such as pyramids and temples located in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico
● Palenque – Mayan ruins in Mexico where you can see their impressive palaces and incredible art
● Tulum – ruins located on Mexico’s Caribbean coast near Cancun
● Tikal – a big Mayan city in the northern jungles of Guatemala
● Copan – an archaeological site located in Honduras
● Those interested in Afro-Latin and indigenous history and culture will find plenty to discover in Panama

3. It’s Affordable

There are many accommodation options in Central America. So, you’ll certainly be able to find something according to your preference and budget – from cheap hostels to luxury hotels and beautiful villas along the coast.

At the same time, the region’s markets are not just places to find affordable fresh produce; they are also cultural experiences in their own right. Wandering through a bustling Central American market, you can soak in the vibrant atmosphere, interact with local vendors, and even pick up a few phrases in Spanish or an indigenous language. It’s a wonderful way to understand the local way of life and contribute to the local economy.

Bus travel is very common in Central America, and it’s one of the cheapest ways to get around. Long bus rides from one country to another are much more affordable than airplane tickets, also allowing you to look at the beautiful landscape along the way.

One of the main reasons to travel to Central America this year is because it’s more affordable than its southern and northern neighbors. Haggling is very common here, so it’s easy to find ways to stretch your dollars, even if you travel on a tight budget. You’ll always be able to find cheap but delicious food, as well as affordable local tours. If you visit local markets, you’ll find tons of fresh fruit for incredibly low prices.

Whatever your reason is for traveling to Central America, be it on a tropical honeymoon or a long-awaited family vacation, we will make sure you find what you are looking for!

4. You Can Enjoy Adventure Sports

One of the reasons to travel to Central America this year is to try some adventure sports. Dive sites across the region are first-class, so you can get an unforgettable visual and sensory spectacle. If you imagine yourself diving among corals and unique species, visit the Great Blue Hole on a Belize vacation. It’s known for its huge drop-off and stalactite formations.

In addition to the adrenaline-pumping activities, there are plenty of opportunities for more gentle adventure sports suitable for all ages. Kayaking through mangroves, gentle hikes to waterfalls, and birdwatching tours are all fantastic ways to engage with Central America’s natural world at a more relaxed pace.

Honduras is a popular and non-expensive destination for scuba diving excursions. It also has numerous clear-water beaches, which are perfect for snorkeling. Another, more off-the-beaten-path destination for diving is Isla Coiba in Panama. It is often called the “Galapagos of Central America”.

You should also try white water rafting on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica or surfing the waves of the famous Puerto Escondido in Mexico and El Salvador’s Costa Del Sol beach.

If all of these don’t sound like enough fun for you, there’s also a possibility to have the ultimate experience of volcano boarding. It’s a unique sport you can try on the slopes of a volcano. One of the most popular places in the world for this activity is Cerro Negro, located near Leon in western Nicaragua. First, you’ll hike up the volcano, and then you’ll slide down while sitting or standing on thin plywood or a metal board.

5. It’s A Foodie’s Paradise

One of the first associations that travelers have when they think about Central America is definitely delicious local cuisine. Its varied gastronomy is based on tortillas, rice, black and red beans, potatoes, fried meat, seafood, and coconut milk. However, it also has some Western influences. Central American cuisine is also known for its use of many different species and the rich combination of flavors.

Don’t miss the chance to attend a local cooking class or food tour to appreciate the diverse flavors of Central American cuisine truly. These experiences not only allow you to taste the food but also to learn about the history and traditions behind each dish, providing a more holistic understanding of the region’s culinary heritage.

In addition, you should try delicious tropical fruits – mangoes, papayas, pineapples, melons, star fruit, passion fruit, etc. And, if you wish to drink some refreshing cocktails while you’re relaxing on a beach or at a party, just remember that this area is a producer of the best rum in the world.

Are You Moving to Central America?

Those who visit Central America simply fall in love with its charm. Some are so driven by its relaxed lifestyle that they decide to relocate from another part of the world and start a new life chapter right there. Once you visit this area, it will definitely amaze all your senses and call you to come back again. If you happen to be one of those that decide to move to this beautiful region, make sure to arrange for car transportation and take your vehicle with you. Then, you’ll be ready for the best adventures of your life. Go on a road trip as almost all the natural wonders in Central America are easily approachable by car.

Top Things To Do In Belize in 2025

Belize might be one of the smallest countries in Central America, but it offers a surprisingly rich variety of experiences for visitors, no matter if you are looking for a family vacation in Belize or a Belize honeymoon package.

From exploring the first jaguar preserve in the world to stepping back in time at some of the most significant ancient Maya ruins, stick around to learn about the top things to do in Belize on your next vacation.

Top Things To Do In Belize

1. Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye, Belize’s largest island, hovers in a vacation sweet spot: it has just enough amenities to make it exciting but is not so overdeveloped that you’re tripping over flip-flopped tourists. A mangrove swamp is the eye of this white beach island and golf carts are the main form of transportation along the sandy roads.

With its plentiful outdoor activities, this 25-mile-long island off the coast of northern Belize was originally inhabited by the Mayans to serve as a far-extending trade route, spanning from present-day Mexico to as far south as Honduras. Today, Ambergris Caye welcomes thousands of visitors seeking easy access to the barrier reef that surrounds the island. Snorkelers and intrepid divers alike will also want to explore Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

When you’re not underwater, explore San Pedro, Ambergris’ main town. Here you will find beachside restaurants, lounges, shops and luxury hotels.

You can reach Ambergris Caye by boat or plane from Belize City.

2. Caye Caulker

As Ambergris Caye’s smaller, less-visited sister island, Caye Caulker has a lot more to offer than what meets the eye. Caye Caulker is a perfect stop as one of the top Belize attractions for those looking to experience the laidback Belizean lifestyle.

Located just a few miles off the coast of Belize City, Caye Caulker is a popular budget-friendly stop. Only five miles long, the primary mode of transportation on this island is by golf cart, bicycle, and by foot. Although Caye Caulker is small, the island offers a variety of things to do; from watersports and fishing to touring ancient ruins and zip lining.

If you are looking for a relaxing day of doing nothing, head over to Caye Caulker’s “Split”, named after a channel that divides this small island in two. After a day exploring what Caye Caulker has to offer, check out some of the island’s tasty restaurants or street stalls. Everything from fresh seafood to barbeque cuisine is readily available for hungry tourists to try.

3. The Blue Hole

As one of the top 10 best diving spots on the planet, the Belize Blue Hole is one of the best things to explore during your time in Belize. Once exclusively navigated by the local fishermen, the Belize Blue Hole earned an international audience in 1971 when the French oceanographer and marine expert Jacques Cousteau visited the area and deemed it excellent for diving.

Since then, thousands of eager divers and tourists have visited and discovered what lies beneath the turquoise waters at this beautiful natural wonder. As a nearly perfect circular hole measuring nearly 1000 feet across, the Belize Blue Hole features a series of caverns that were filled with the rising ocean at the end of the last great Ice Age. The 400-feet deep circle of limestone teems with angelfish, elkhorn coral, cleaner shrimp, and stalactites.

Plenty of tour operators and private boating trips will bring you up and close to this top Belize attraction. Whether you plan on scuba-diving into the depths or observing the miraculous formation from the boat, you will be in awe of the sheer beauty of the Blue Hole.

4. Mayflower Bocawina National Park

As a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts, the Mayflower Bocawina National Park offers plenty of unique jungle adventures for adrenalin-seeking travelers. This spectacular park is one of the top things to do in Belize and is home to the longest zip-line course in Central America.

With three cascading waterfalls to rappel down, it is no wonder why Bocawina National Park features some of the most exhilarating experiences in the country.

Located in southern Belize in Stann Creek (about 17 miles from Dangriga and 12 from Hopkins), this park consists of over 7000 acres of pristine lowland forests, refreshing waterfalls, and plenty of remains of an ancient Mayan city. Over 200 species of birds have been discovered within the park, making Bocawina a perfect spot for birding. Plenty of other wildlife species have also been spotted, including pumas, tapirs, spider monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, and armadillos.

However you decide to spend your time in the Mayflower Bocawina National Park, you will be able to take in all of Belize’s natural beauty.

5. Placencia Peninsula

Once a sleepy fishing village, Placencia has emerged as an increasingly popular eco-destination in the Caribbean. Boasting 16 miles of golden sands in the southeastern region of Belize, it is no wonder why the Placencia Peninsula is one of the top must-see Belize attractions. Rapidly becoming the eco-tourism capital of Belize, Placencia is notorious for golf carts and bicycles zipping through the rustic streets.

The eastern side of the peninsula meets the gorgeous Caribbean Sea where you can lay out and take in the beautifully warm sun or dive into the crystal blue waters. Head over to the western side of Placencia for a vastly different coastline, featuring a mangrove-lined lagoon filled with fish and other local wildlife.

For those who enjoy outdoor adventure, the Stann Creek region offers a host of activities: hiking through mountainous rain forests, kayaking, deep-sea fishing, diving, and exploring Mayan ruins. Tour guides and dive centers offer a variety of excursions, with boat rides to the outer cayes an ongoing favorite. Also popular are guided land tours to Mayan Ruins or trekking the jungle trails of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, where the first Jaguar Reserve in the world was established.

Whether you are heading to Placencia as a passageway to the popular destinations of the Belize Barrier Reef or simply looking for a relaxing spot to layout, the Placencia Peninsula is definitely a top vacation spot in Belize.

6. Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve & Wildlife Sanctuary

The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in the Stann Creek District of south-central Belize.

Starting at the foothills of the Maya Mountains, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife stretches down the Caribbean coastline encompassing over 150 square miles of trackless wilderness. Rising to fame as the first jaguar sanctuary in the world, Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the must-see Belize attractions for any vacation.

The park area is rich in beauty, wildlife, and Maya culture – containing a minor Mayan ceremonial site known as Chucil Baluum. You can also find the highest mountain in Belize, Victoria Peak, towering at 3,675 feet. To discover the natural beauty Belize has to offer, adding Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary to your top things to do in Belize is a must.

Book a tour and you can embark on a wet and wild jungle adventure. Hike through a protected rain forest habitat that’s home to jaguars, other large cats, and exotic birds, rewarding your efforts with a relaxing float down a tropical river in an inner tube. A swim in a hidden waterfall pool caps off this trek through pristine Belizean wilderness.

 7. Caracol Natural Monument Reservation

To explore the rich history of Belize, make sure to stop by Caracol to discover the beautifully preserved ancient Mayan ruins. Caracol, meaning snail shell in Spanish, refers to the winding circular road that approaches the area, as the original Mayan name has been lost throughout time.

As one of the largest Mayan city-states built during the civilization’s reign, Caracol spans some 65 square miles with hidden ruins and gems sprinkled throughout the Belizean landscape. The main pyramid found in the center of Caracol is known as Canaa, or the Sky Palace. This structure remains the tallest building in Belize, standing at 143 feet tall.

You can easily spend a full day exploring what Caracol has to offer – from strolling through the surrounding forest to meandering around the ancient buildings and pathways. Make sure to stop by this large ancient Maya archaeological site during your adventurous vacation in Belize.

8. Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

Originally created to protect Belize’s native pine forest, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is easily one of the top Belize attractions to explore during your vacation. Whether hiking, swimming, or birding, you will not be disappointed by what this nature park has to offer with low crowd levels and pristine natural beauty.

Located in the highlands of the southern zone of western Belize, the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve offers cool temperatures and reveals splendid natural monuments. Within its 300,000 acres of protected pine forests, you will find sites including Thousand Foot Falls, the largest fall of Belize and the Central American region, as well as the cave Rio Frio, a quarter-mile cave, to name a few.

Popularly known as the spot where the Belize river spills over large granite ledges and rocks, the Rio on Pools is one of the top attractions in Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. This beautiful natural wonder offers plenty of small waterfalls and cool round pools for swimmers to enjoy.

There are also numerous caves to discover throughout Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, making this Belize destination a top outdoor spot to spend one of your vacation days.

Expeditions can be carried out by mountain bike, on foot, or on horseback (horses for hire on-site). Venture among the pines to examine the colorful vegetation, various bird species, and other animal life such as tapir, cougar, jaguar orr ocelot. The Pine Ridge is the region par excellence to reconnect with nature, so enjoy!

9. Actun Tunichil Muknal – ATM Cave

As an impressive, artifact-rich Mayan ceremonial cave, Actun Tunichil Muknal is one of the top Belize attractions you should add to your vacation itinerary.

Actun Tunichil Muknal, also known locally as ATM, is located near San Ignacio, Cayo District, and is notable as a Maya archaeological site that includes skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware. There are several areas with skeletal remains in the main chamber.

By crossing rivers, swimming across a pool, wading up streams, squeezing through passageways, and climbing up a ladder, you will reach the beautiful site that so many dream of visiting. Plan on being submerged in water 90% of the time wearing a light-equipped helmet as you explore this breathtaking destination.

Actun Tunichil Muknal has earned its reputation as one of the most stunning natural and anthropological sites around. National Geographic ranked Actun Tunichil Muknal as the number one sacred cave in the world, placing it above breathtaking spiritual caves throughout India, Greece, and China.

As one of the top things to do in Belize, touring Actun Tunichil Muknal is a great way to spend one of your days in this beautiful country.

10. Lamanai Archaological Reserve

As the only large Mayan city-state that maintains its original Mayan name, Lamanai has consistently been occupied over the course of 3,000 years. It is one of the top Belize attractions, Lamanai is located in the northern region of Belize in the Orange Walk District.

Lamanai is one of the most beautiful preserved Mayan ruins and holds a wide array of ancient artifacts and buildings for you to discover and explore. From ancient buildings and pyramids to game courts and sugar mills, Lamanai could easily take up a full day of your Belize itinerary. It is one of the most interesting tours from Belize City:

After an hour’s drive on the northern highway, you board a riverboat at Tower Hill. Along the New River leading into swamps, little creeks, and lagoons, it is easy to encounter hawks, kites, and falcons. After an hour and a half on the river, you arrive at Lamanai (Maya for Submerged Crocodile). Huge masks depicting dead rulers and gods seem to materialize out of the rainforest, amid the chatter of birdlife and the haunting call of the howler monkeys.

As one of the largest Maya ceremonial sites in Belize (boasting over 950 acres), Lamanai offers a unique layout compared to other ancient Maya destinations. Make sure to seek out to Temple of the Mask, the Temple of the Jaguar Masks, and the High Temple during your time exploring Lamanai on your vacation to Belize.
