7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

b
M

Even though Panama is mostly known for its famous Canal it has so much more to offer and does not need to be shy in comparison with other Latin American tourist destinations. In this post, we will look at some of the amazing highlights of Panama.

Panama has long been in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Costa Rica but that is slowly changing. One of the main reasons being the lower number of tourists that make Panama a more attractive destination. And Panama can easily keep up with Costa Rica with its breathtakingly beautiful Caribbean and Pacific islands, untouched rainforests, award-winning coffee farms, and its bustling metropolis Panama City. Find out more about the best beaches in Panama!

Panama is also very close to my heart as I spent a few years working and living in this amazing little country that is so full of energy. And this is actually where I met my husband. Read on to find out exactly where!

Let’s look at some of the best places to visit in Panama.

Here are our Highlights of Panama:

1. Central America´s most attractive capital Panama City & its famous canal

For most of you, Panama City will be your port of entry into the country. The city’s impressive skyline reminds us of Miami or New York and in the last few years, many hotels have opened in high-rise buildings and offer breathtaking views!

Sights of Panama City

Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo is the historic center and also the hippest and most elegant part.

Many Colonial buildings are being restored to their original glory and often house beautiful courtyards, interesting galleries, restaurants or bars – often with a rooftop from where you can enjoy the skyline of the modern city.

Most of the city´s vibrating nightlife takes place here too. Not far from here is the Causeway Amador which connects four small islands offshore. A palm-lined road runs the length of the causeway, with benches, parks, and a path for bicycling and jogging alongside.

The ruins of Panama Viejo are the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country. It is located in the suburbs of the modern city. Together with the historic Casco Antiguo, it has been a World Heritage Site since 1997.

The famous Panama Canal

And last but not least the famous Panama Canal: A visit to what is often called “The Eighth Wonder of the World” is a must. You can either visit the famous Miraflores Visitor Center and Locks located a few minutes outside of the city where you will be able to watch the huge ships and freighters pass, often with just a few inches on both sides, through the locks.

Another option is to book a partial or complete transit through the Panama Canal on a tourist boat.

Last but not least, the city is a great starting point for multiple excursions into the surroundings of Panama City.

You can visit indigenous tribes, go hiking or bird watching. Or you can board the train along the Panama Canal which takes you to Colón on the Atlantic side and returns in the late afternoon – it runs only Monday to Friday and not on holidays. Be careful: Colón is not a safe place.

2. The breathtakingly beautiful San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) – my personal highlight of Panama

My personal favorite of the highlights of Panama!! These islands are a real tropical paradise that cannot be missed. They are located on the Caribbean coast of Panama and stretch all the way to Colombia. Home to the indigenous Guna tribe, you actually pay an entry fee to visit their territory or “comarca”, the 365 islands are a must-visit if you are willing to play it rough for a few nights.

Accommodation is rather basic and often backpacker-style with shared bathrooms. And who would have thought that exactly on one of these dreamlike islands is where I met my now-husband!

Trips are usually sold as a package including transportation, overnights and full pension as most islands have no restaurants or shops. Make sure to bring your original passport (being so close to Colombia you will pass border patrol) and everything else you need for your stay including small change for optional tours or souvenirs such as the beautiful hand-made molas.

Another option is to go sailing and explore the islands that way – either on a private sailing boat or shared with a small group of international travelers.

3. Whale watching in the Pearl Islands

The Pearl Islands of Panama is an archipelago that covers around 250 small islands of which most are uninhabited.

The locals call the islands Islas de las Perlas, a name that dates back from Spanish colonial times. The Spanish Conquistadors discovered the islands in 1503 and gave the Islands its name due to the great amounts of pearls found on them.

The islands are nowadays most famous for their spectacular white-sand deserted beaches and for whale watching. Did you know that Panama is the only place in the world where Humpback whales from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres come to breed and give birth?

Thousands of Humpbacks migrate northwards from their summer feeding grounds around Antarctica, arriving in the region from July through September/October.

They breed and give birth to their calves in the warm, shallow and safe waters that can be found in Panama just a few miles off-shore from Panama City and along the entire Pacific coast. The chance to see whales here is over 95%!

Interesting for tourists is mainly the small and sleepy Contadora Island which holds a few 2 to 3-star hotel options. The island can be easily reached from Panama City, either by a 2-hour ferry ride or a 25-minute flight.

4. The Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro

Another one of my personal favorites of Panama’s highlights is the archipelago of “Bocas,” located close to the border to Costa Rica on the Caribbean side of Panama. It can be reached by plane (from Panama City or San José / Costa Rica) or by a 30-minute water taxi ride from the mainland towns of Almirante or Chiriqui Grande.

The main island, Colón (Spanish for Columbus), houses most hotels, restaurants, and bars.

If you prefer a quieter experience, check out the B&Bs at nearby Playa Bluff Beach or on the neighboring islands of Bastimentos, Carenero, or Cristobal. Most Bocas del Toro hotels are not located near a swimming beach due to the many mangroves in the area.

Bocas is rather considered an active beach vacation as most times you are required to take a water taxi to the different islands and beaches. You can book excursions with most hotels or in Bocas town, or we can include them in your Panama vacation package.

Another option is to rent bicycles, kayaks, quads, or SUPs for a more active experience. The islands have it all: relax quietly or party all day long!

We also visit the islands of Bocas del Toro on our Best of Panama tour.

5. Local life on the Azuero Peninsula

Often called the “cradle of Panama’s culture” you will surely get to know more about Panamanian traditions with a visit to the Azuero Peninsula. Here, life is slow and people are friendly. The region is famous for religious festivals dating back to Spanish colonial times and it also houses Panama’s best Carnival celebration in Chitré and Las Tablas.

Around the small town of Pedasí, you will find white-sanded beaches, diving, sport-fishing, and horse-back riding.

Nearby Playa Venao is known for its world-class surfing. Thousands of sea turtles can be viewed both nesting and hatching on Isla Cañas, a Wildlife Reserve, not far from Venao. Four of the eight known turtle species in Panama nest here.

Turtle hatching can be observed July-November. A visit to the island Isla Iguana is a must, especially in the whale-watching season from July to October. It can be easily reached by boat from Playa Arenal. Watching some of the gigantic humpback whales breach, would surely make your highlights of Panama list.

Here, you find a nice sheltered beach with great snorkeling and the giant iguanas that gave the place its name. The region around Pedasi, and the Azuero Peninsula in general, is becoming increasingly popular with retired expats!

6. Panama’s premier mountain destination and adventure sports capital: Boquete

Located in the Chiriquí province, close to the border with Costa Rica, it offers not only spectacular mountain scenery with a lush flora and fauna, award-winning coffee farms and a spring-like climate but also a great variety of outdoor adventure that ranges from river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, canopy and suspension bridge tours to relaxed coffee tours, golf and bird-watching tours.

Active travelers can climb the Baru Volcano, an inactive volcano which towers over the area with majestic views.

The locals in Boquete are friendly, the town is quaint and easy to get around in and is frequently selected as one of the best places in the world to retire.

7. The up-and-coming destination of Boca Chica

In Chiriquí National Marine Park, near the Costa Rican border, lies a stunning new coast and island destination known as Boca Chica. It offers pristine ocean views, lush vegetation and picturesque uninhabited islands of white sand and swaying palms.

Chiriquí province, famous as a mountain destination, is now also a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, thick majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales are there for your viewing pleasure.

Just starting to develop as a destination it already has several very attractive lodgings options, from a family-owned boutique hotel to a luxurious private island retreat.

*****

Conclusion:

Panama is an amazing place. With its breathtakingly beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and its Highlands full of adventure sports options, the tiny country can be as adventurous or as chilled as you want it to be.

Our Panama Self-Drive Tour “Between Two Oceans” is only one of the options to explore Panama, but it is probably my personal favorite!

The Most Beautiful Hotels In Bocas del Toro – Panama’s Caribbean Gem

The Most Beautiful Hotels In Bocas del Toro – Panama’s Caribbean Gem

As an eco-tourism favorite in Central America, Bocas del Toro is a fabulous choice for adventure travel in Panama. Situated on an archipelago located off the northwest coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro consists of seven islands, with Bocas Town as its regional capital. To discover some of the most beautiful hotels in Bocas del Toro, sticking to the popular islands of Isla Colón, Isla Bastimentos, and Isla Solarte is your best bet.

Known as Panama’s hidden Caribbean gem, Bocas del Toro welcomes adventure seekers who will find plenty to do to keep them occupied – from snorkeling and scuba diving to sailing and hiking. Bocas is also home to a vibrant tropical rainforest, cultural sites, and some of the best beaches in Panama – all complete with a friendly, laidback vibe.

Having lived and worked in tourism in Panama for several years, I definitely have my favorite Bocas del Toro hotels. Let me share them with you!

The Best Hotels in Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro Hotels on Isla Colón:

As this archipelago’s most developed island, Isla Colón is the most popular island in Bocas del Toro offering the most amenities to tourists. This island is home to the famous Bocas Town, centered around a short stretch of restaurants, shops, hotels, and colorful local homes. Bocas Town is also a hub for local nightlife with reggae music emanating from open-air bars such as Barco Hundido (The Sunken Boat).

On Isla Colón, you can find Playa Estrella, also known as “Starfish Beach,” a protected eco-tourism spot in Panama where you can enjoy the area’s Afro-Caribbean culture and food. Playa Estrella and neighboring Boca del Drago are great calmer beaches and good for swimming.

Another great spot is Playa Bluff which is perfect for world-class surfing and a chance to learn about the local sea turtle conservation efforts. Isla Colón is also home to Paki Point, a laid-back beach where you can sit back and enjoy a refreshing beverage.

1. Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel ***(*)

Located just steps away from Main Street in Bocas Town, you will find the beautiful Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel on the southern tip of Isla Colon. The magnificent hotel sits over the Caribbean Sea and features fantastic views of the area’s islands, mountains, and boats passing by.
In addition to beautiful hotel rooms, guests can enjoy their days in Bocas del Toro at the restaurant and bar located on the property. Guests also enjoy the convenience of the PADI 5-Star Bocas Dive Center found at the Divers Paradise Boutique Hotel.

Divers Paradise is a great choice for guests who are only staying for one or two nights and want to be close to several bars and restaurants. From Bocas Town, it is easy to book different day trips to the surrounding islands and beaches or to rent bicycles, quad bikes or kayaks to explore the archipelago. Enjoy your active beach holiday!

2. Gran Hotel Bahia **(*)

As the oldest operating hotel in Bocas del Toro, Gran Hotel Bahia offers a pleasant accommodation option for those looking to explore the area.
Built in 1905 it originally housed the main office of the United Fruit Company located in Bocas del Toro. It has been renovated in the style of the former building, reflecting the spirit of the town.

Caring about its guests as much as about its employees, town and the environment, the hotel offers a very authentic Bocas experience and makes everyone feel right at home. Individualized service and hospitality are highest priority in this tiny peace of paradise. In addition to this one-of-a-kind experience, it provides all modern facilities one needs to be comfortable. Gran Hotel Bahia will “infect” you with the liveliness, friendliness and relaxed vibe of Bocas – something you have probably never experienced before.

While the rooms offer an old-fashion feel, there is a charm to Gran Hotel Bahia that is unmatched throughout the area.  The Gran Hotel Bahia is also situated in an excellent location on Isla Colon, offering quick access to a nearby dock.

3. Hotel Bocas del Toro ***(*)

The hotel offers a unique blend of simple elegance and historical ambiance of Caribbean exotic wood craftsmanship with the sparkling sea beneath. Nicely appointed with wood and nautical furnishings the 11-room boutique hotel offers the concept of comfort with 400-thread count cotton sheets, Wi-Fi, Flat Screen cable TV, air conditioning, telephones, coffee makers, ocean and town balcony views, ocean kayak rentals and in-room massage.

The indoors and outdoors blend into a rare union, fulfilling your eternal dream come true: Paradise By the Sea.

It has a restaurant opening onto the sea and is a 5-minute walk from the airport.

Elegantly decorated in nautical style, each room at the Bocas del Toro includes a flat-screen cable TV, air conditioning, a hair dryer, a coffee machine with organic coffee, handmade coconut bath amenities, and complimentary beach towels. Some of them have a balcony or terrace.

Located on a deck over the water, the restaurant has a Caribbean menu, offering seafood and local dishes, and a lobby/street bar with TV and tropical cocktails. A breakfast buffet is served every morning, and a snack bar with a TV area is also available.

The staff can arrange tours along the archipelago and the coral reef, where diving, snorkeling, and kayaking are also possible.

4. La Coralina Island House ****

The La Coralina Island House is located not far from Bocas Town on a bay with a beautiful white sandy beach and offers an idyllic retreat. To the sounds of coconut trees whispering in the wind and the murmur of the turquoise Caribbean Sea, the property offers spectacular views, seclusion, and a balance of indoor and outdoor living with exceptional private villas and rooms, enchanting gardens, world-class restaurants and bars and a holistic wellness spa.

The 8 villas and 23 rooms are uniquely designed as they combine building and nature. They are based on the fundamental belief that living in nature is the greatest luxury. They offer spectacular ocean and rainforest views, seclusion, and the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor living. Wildlife and scenic views are just part of what awaits you at this delightful home on Coralina Bay. Whether you’re looking for a fun-filled adventure in a natural setting or a quiet escape, there’s something for everyone.

Experience the sparsely populated Playa Bluff during the day. Stroll along the 7 km (4 miles) stretch of golden sandy beach, swim (conditions permitting), or relax with your favorite cocktail or a freshly cut coconut.

Please note: Be careful when swimming in the sea! Even if the beach and the warm water temperatures invite you to swim, there can be increased waves and stronger currents all year round.

5. Island Plantation Hotel ***(*)

If you are looking for a Bali-style resort to enjoy during your stay in Panama, Island Plantation is one of the best Bocas del Toro hotels for you! As a small eco-resort, Island Plantation sits on the breathtaking Bluff Beach on Colon Island. Amenities at this fantastic Bocas del Toro hotel include a fully tiled swimming pool, colorful tropical gardens, and the signature BomBom Beach Club nestled on the golden sand found in front of Island Plantation.

Enjoy their delicious dining facilities during your stay at one of the most beautiful Bocas del Toro hotels. Whether sipping on a tropical cocktail or loading up your plate at the main restaurant “The Terrace,” you are going to love what Island Plantation’s onsite bars and restaurants have to offer.

New to Island Plantation is the Yoga and Meditation platform right in the heart of the lush rainforest. A path through the organic herb and vegetable gardens leads to 165 steps that will guide you to a tall hilltop right behind the hotel.

Enjoy the peaceful energy and gorgeous ocean views while spotting monkeys, sloths and exotic birds. Listen to the soothing sounds of the ocean and the waterfall in the background while you read your favorite book or meditate. The large thatch roofed platform is ideal for yoga and your personal wellbeing routine as well as for scheduled massages. An array of activities can be enjoyed on site or in the surroundings, including hiking and snorkeling.

Please use caution when swimming at Playa Bluff! There is a possibility of large waves and under currents throughout the year.

6. The Hummingbird ***(*)

Escape to paradise and enjoy your unforgettable Panama vacation at The Hummingbird, one of the top Bocas del Toro hotels. With personalized service during your entire stay, you will have everything taken care of to fully enjoy your vacation.

As a boutique eco bed & breakfast, The Hummingbird is situated directly on the beautiful Bluff Beach. There are only six suites found on this exclusive property, each offering a unique option for guests. The rooms do not have air conditioning or television!

Those staying at The Hummingbird can expect a pool, restaurant, and bar surrounded by tropical gardens on the property. With the Panamanian jungle as a backdrop, The Hummingbird is one of the top hotels in Bocas del Toro offering awe-inspiring views of the Caribbean Sea.

During the day you will be able to enjoy the barely inhabited Playa Bluff. Stroll along the 4-mile-long golden sandy beach, swim (if conditions allow), or relax in a hammock while sipping your favorite cocktail or a freshly cut coconut.

Please use caution when swimming at Playa Bluff! There is a possibility of large waves and undercurrents throughout the year.

Bocas del Toro Hotels on Isla Bastimentos:

As one of the largest islands in Panama, Isla Bastimentos boasts a laidback alternative to the busier island, Isla Colón. Easily accessible through a 10-minute boat ride from Isla Colón, Isla Bastimentos is home to plenty of pristine natural beaches. From the famous Red Frog Beach to the picturesque Wizard Beach found at the end of a winding jungle path, to the hidden coral-lined Polo Beach featuring calm waters, Isla Bastimentos is a great spot to escape the crowds and fully relax on your vacation in Bocas del Toro.

8. Red Frog Beach Island Resort & Spa ****

Nestled on one of the world’s best secret beaches, the Red Frog Beach Island Resort boasts upscale accommodation options for couples and families looking for the optimal adventure in Panama. Here you can stay on a scenic beach and explore the surrounding tropical landscape authentically.

3. E-BIKE PANAMA CITY TOUR

Today you will experience a special Panama City Tour. Your tour starts with a transfer to the Causeway Amador, a long and narrow man-made island extending out at the southernmost point of Panama City. It is also the start or end of the Panama Canal so you are likely to see the huge container ships waiting in line to pass the Canal. From there you have a magnificent view of the skyline.

You then continue to the historic old town, Casco Antiguo or also called Casco Viejo, where you will see some of the oldest architecture and buildings of this modern city. During your ride, you will see many unique colonial buildings, some of which are still largely original, and others are nicely and colorfully restored. The historic Casco Antiguo is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has become a center of art, design, and cultural development. Many new cafes, bars with rooftop terraces, restaurants, and hotels have opened here.

Later on, you cycle past the Mercado de Mariscos, the local fish market, and the skyscrapers along the Cinta Costera towards Paitilla. On the way, you stop at the PANAMA sign on the Cinta Costera coastal road and have the chance to take some great vacation photos. The ride back takes you along the Cinta Costera 3 which goes around the old town from where you can once again enjoy a fantastic view of the city skyline. Refreshments will be provided.

After this exciting tour, the driver will take you back to your hotel.

Duration: about 4 hrs

4. METROPOLITAN NATURAL PARK

This is a nice half-day tour from Panama City.

Right in the heart of Panama City sits a 573-acre park known as Metropolitan Natural Park. This nature sanctuary in the midst of a metropolis is the city’s only wildlife preserve, and the only tropical forest to serve as a public recreational park for a metropolitan area. Despite being that close to Panama City, the park is also home to 227 bird species, 45 mammals, 36 kinds of snakes, and 14 kinds of amphibians. In addition, there are about 284 plant species, including trees that reach between 100 and 115 feet high.

To get the most out of your visit to the park, consider taking a guided half-day tour from Panama City to learn about all of the flora and fauna along the way. If you’re up for a hike, there are 5 trails to choose from, and each offers a little something different. The Mono Titi Road, for example, will take you to the top of Cerro Cedro for impressive views of Panama City. After your hike, consider stopping by the park’s butterfly house, too.

Duration: about 4 hrs

If you want to venture out on your own, the park is just a few minutes from downtown Panama City and can be reached by car or taxi.

5. PARTIAL OR COMPLETE CROSSING OF THE PANAMA CANAL (BY BOAT)

PARTIAL TRANSIT OF THE PANAMA CANAL

Without a doubt, one of the best day tours from Panama City, Panama is a boat ride on the famous Panama Canal.

Experience one of the most impressive engineering masterpieces in human history from up close: the Panama Canal! On the partial crossing from Gamboa to Panama City (Southbound), you will get to know the fascinating Canal, which is often considered the 8th wonder of the world. The Panama Canal allows ships to travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through a 48-mile-long shipping route, saving almost 10,000 miles around the South American continent.

In the morning, you will be picked up at your hotel and brought to the port. Here, you board a tourist boat and start your about 4-hour-long partial crossing of the Panama Canal. During this time, you will pass the Miraflores Locks, the Miraflores Lake, the Pedro Miguel Locks, and the Gaillard Cut (the narrowest part of the Canal) up to Gatun Lake.

Before reaching the Pedro Miguel Locks at the southern end of the Cut, you will be able to view the Centennial Bridge which crosses over the Canal. Next, the Pacific Queen will enter Pedro Miguel Locks, which is one of the two sets of locks on the Pacific side, and here the vessel is lowered 9 meters in one step. You will then enter Miraflores Lake, which is a small artificial body of fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel from Miraflores Locks, the latter being the final set of locks before reaching the Pacific Ocean. At Miraflores Locks, the vessel is lowered 60 feet in two distinct steps.

Once in the Pacific Ocean, the vessel will sail to Flamenco Marina where passengers disembark. On the way to Flamenco, you will pass under the Bridge of the Americas, and later, you will be able to admire the Bay of Panama and Panama City’s splendorous skyline.

The partial transit of the Panama Canal is currently offered most Saturdays and Sundays and can be North- or Southbound. Duration of the entire tour: about 7 hrs

COMPLETE TRANSIT OF THE PANAMA CANAL

Complete transits are always northbound. You will pass the Miraflores Locks, the Miraflores Lake, the Pedro Miguel Locks, and the narrowest part of the Canal, the Gaillard Cut. But instead of getting off in Gamboa, on your Panama Canal full transit tour, you will enjoy a trip through the Gatun Lake, which was formed by erecting the Gatun Dam across the Chagres River.

As you transit through Gatun Lake you will pass the Smithsonian Research Station at Barro Colorado. You will also experience the Gatun Locks, which are the only set of locks in the Atlantic sector. In Gatun Locks, the vessel will be lowered a total of 26 meters in three distinct chambers. Upon arriving at Colon, you will disembark at Colon 2000, where transportation back to Panama City will be provided.

The complete crossing of the Panama Canal is only offered once or twice a month (on a Saturday) and takes the whole day. Dates are on request. Duration of the entire tour: about 12 hrs

***

The exact departure time of the tours is only announced 24 hours before. Therefore, we strongly advise you not to schedule your arrival, departure, and onward journey on this day.

The excursion includes return transfers from your Panama City hotel, an English-speaking guide on board, lunch, and soft drinks.

Panama Marine Adventures is the most reliable company to offer Panama Canal transits.

6. HIKING THE CAMINO DE CRUCES TRAIL

If you want to be active and learn more about Panama’s history at the same time, then check out this day tour from Panama City.

The Camino de Cruces, a stone road that dates back to 1530, connected the Caribbean with the Pacific during the Spanish-colonial period, centuries before the trans-isthmus railway or Panama Canal. Built by slaves so that the Spanish could transport gold and silver from the Pacific to the Caribbean. You can still see the paved road at many points along the way.

Today the Camino de Cruces National Park, less than 10 miles north of the capital, serves as a biological corridor between Soberanía National Park to the north, and Metropolitano Park to the south. The park is made up of tropical forests, home to a wide array of jungle wildlife, as well as lakes and lagoons, wetlands, rivers, and waterfalls. Take a walk along the park’s trails to spot titi monkeys, coatis, two- and three-toed sloths, feathered friends galore, and even two Panama Canal locks.

Our hike starts in Gamboa, where we experience a short boat ride to the starting point “Venta de Cruces”, a once important stopover on the Cruces Trail. We will hike a 10 km (just over 6 miles) section of the Camino de Cruces, stopping repeatedly to take photos and observe flora and fauna.

Duration: about 8 hrs

Note: Depending on the season, the trail is either very dry with many fallen leaves or extremely muddy and slippery during the rainy season.

7. HIKING SOBERANIA NATIONAL PARK & BOAT TOUR GATUN LAKE

This impressive day tour from Panama City, Panama is for all active nature and jungle lovers.

The tour starts in the morning, with a drive from your hotel to the nearby Soberanía National Park. Here, an about 1- to 2-hour-long hike through the jungle awaits you. You´ll get to know the rich tropical flora of the park and with a bit of luck, you will even catch a glimpse of different animal species, such as birds and monkeys.

Afterward, you will head to the port of Gamboa. There, you will enjoy a 2 ½ -hour boat ride on lake Gatún. During the trip, you will get to know the lake’s biodiversity (among it monkeys, crocodiles, turtles, sloths, and diverse birds …) and closely encounter other boats on their way across the Panama Canal. After a visit to “Monkey Island”, you will head back to the city.

Duration: about 8 hrs

8. VISIT AN INDIGENOUS EMBERA VILLAGE

This is definitely one of our favorite day tours from Panama City. Travel back in time! You will leave the modern city and head northeast to Chagres National Park. Here, at the banks of the Alajuela Lake, you will board small dugout canoes that will take you up the Rio Chagres and along a fascinating jungle backdrop.

In the village of the Emberá tribe, you will gain authentic insights into a culture that has inhabited this land for over a millennium, long before the Europeans discovered the new continent. The original traditions and their way of life will take you back centuries. You will receive some interesting information about the culture and see a beautiful folklore show.

If you like feeling refreshed, why not take a jump into the cool river? At lunchtime, you will be served a simple typical lunch, mostly consisting of fish and patacones (fried plantains), before heading back to modern Panama City.

This tour is not recommended for people with back problems.

Duration: about 7 hrs

9. HISTORIC PORTOBELO AND CARIBBEAN BEACHES

In the north of Panama, on the beautiful blue shores of the Caribbean, you will find a small town known as Portobelo. Today, quaint fishing boats sway to the rhythm of the sea, as lush vegetation blends with the blue of the Caribbean behind them. A closer look reveals the remains of colonial Spanish forts and the last relics of this town’s legacy as the largest colonial Spanish port in Central America, and the reason it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

When Columbus arrived at this sparkling bay in 1502, he was said to have exclaimed “Porto Bello,” and it’s easy to see why. By 1597, the beautiful bay of Portobelo had become the main crossroads for merchandise between Europe and the Americas. It was here that gold from Peru would be shipped to Spain, where treasures from the east would make their way to Panama City and where trade markets were said to have lasted for 40 days at a time.

Your excursion starts with a drive from Panama City to the port of Portobelo on the Caribbean coast. After a short sightseeing tour, a simple fishing boat (no roof) takes you to Venas Azules, located in the Portobelo National Park in Colón. These are beautiful channels with crystal clear and turquoise waters surrounded by mangroves. Later, we head to the beautiful and unspoiled beach of Playa Blanca.

We will enjoy a lovely white-sand beach on a tranquil cove surrounded by dense wilderness. There’s a colorful reef in the center of the cove near the beach, as well as a second reef that sits in deeper waters about 100m offshore.

For lunch, head to the beach of Playa Escondido where you can enjoy a typical Caribbean lunch with rice and coconut milk.

Duration: about 11 hrs

Info: From January to April, higher waves are to be expected due to the strong north winds.

10. GUNA YALA (SAN BLAS ISLANDS) DAY TOUR

If you don’t have the time for an overnight visit to the San Blas Islands or mind the basic accommodation, then think about a day tour from Panama City, Panama to the San Blas Islands (Guna Yala).

The island chain is made up of hundreds of small palm-fringed islands. This is a pristine habitat that is inhabited by the indigenous Gunas that should be included in any visit to Panama. We will make sure to capture the essence of San Blas during this day tour by showing you the most popular sites in the archipelago.

The San Blas Islands (original name Guna Yala)  are home to some of the world’s most ravishing islands, but it’s the sea, which truly makes these islands shine. Luminous aquamarine waters with a crystal clarity lap upon these dazzling white shores, located in the Caribbean sea of Panamá.
This 365 island archipelago provides the perfect mix of postcard beauty and unique cultural exploration.

In the afternoon you will return to the capital, where you will be transferred back to the hotel.

Note: This day tour is very long and strenuous. You usually leave Panama City around 5.30 am and don’t return until about 6 or 7 pm. The drive in shared jeeps is partly on windy, twisty roads so if you get motion-sick, be prepared.

Duration: about 13 hrs

11. ALTOS DE CAMPANA NATIONAL PARK AND PINEAPPLE FARM

In the morning, you will get picked up from your hotel and you head west on the famous Panamericana and cross the famous Puente de Las Americas bridge over the Panama Canal.

Along the way, stop at Quesos Chela, a small shop that’s almost an “institution” among the Panameños. It is famous not only for its cheese, but also for its delicious empanadas, chichas (a type of juice made from fresh fruits), and chicheme (a non-alcoholic drink made from milk, corn, cinnamon, and vanilla). A tasting here is a must.

Later, you will reach the oldest national park in Panama, Altos de Campana. Founded in 1966, the park offers various viewpoints and diverse bird life. A total of 267 bird species live here but also 39 mammal species including possums, sloths, monkeys, and the golden frog, which is threatened with extinction. Here we visit the viewpoint Caja de Agua with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the Pacific Ocean and take a short hike.

On the way back to Panama City, a visit to a pineapple farm is on our agenda. The fruits of this farm are also exported. You will learn all about this tropical fruit, from planting your own pineapple plant to packaging. Finally, there is a tasting of the exotic fruit.

In the late afternoon, your Panama City day tour ends at the hotel.

Duration: about 9 hrs

This tour can only be offered for groups!

12. ANTON VALLEY TOUR

Visit the largest inhabited volcanic crater on earth in the mountains of Coclé province on a day tour from Panama City, Panama. Here lies the tranquil town of El Valle de Antón. A crater ages ago, it was later inhabited by the Indians of the surrounding mountains.

After picking you up at your hotel, a two-hour drive from the capital to El Valle first takes you along the famous Pan-American Highway before going up into the mountains to El Valle. El Valle is a small mountain village with a very pleasant climate and unique birdlife.

Once there, you have the opportunity to learn more about the area on small hikes. You can visit El Macho waterfall, La Piedra Pintada, a rock wall with pre-Columbian stone carvings, Butterfly Haven, a butterfly farm, or the square trees, which you can reach within a short, interesting 45-minute walk.

Every Sunday, you have the possibility to visit the famous market in El Valle. Here, you can admire and buy local produce such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, soap stones, ceramic items, handcrafted wooden baskets, wood furniture, and more. You can also find indigenous Guna vendors in their colorful handicrafts (molas). On other days the market also takes place but it is much smaller.

Duration: about 9 hrs

13. VISIT THE FLOWER ISLAND ISLA TABOGA

Take a relaxing break from the city with this day tour from Panama City, Panama!

After being picked up from your hotel and taken to the port, a typical ferry boat will take you to the small island of Taboga. Only an hour’s boat ride lies between the lively capital Panama City and the pleasant tranquility on the island. The boat trip alone is worthwhile because it offers a unique view of the Puente de las Américas bridge and the impressive skyline of Panama City.

After you arrive on Taboga Island, you have the day at leisure. The 1500 islanders rightly describe their home, where cars or mopeds are almost unknown, as a flower island: oleanders, bougainvilleas, and hibiscus adorn the narrow, winding streets of the village. Here, where Pizarro decided to conquer Peru and the artist Paul Gauguin took a break, you can also find one of the oldest churches in the Western Hemisphere.

On weekends, the island is a popular destination for the Panameños; during the week it is a paradise for peace seekers. Take advantage of the day to walk through the village, refresh yourself in the cool waters of the two beaches and enjoy fresh fish with patacones (fried plantains). If you like to keep fit, hike up the Cerro de la Cruz and enjoy a magnificent view of the Panama City skyline from afar.

In the afternoon you will return to the capital, where you will be transferred back to the hotel.

Duration: about 8 hrs (can be shortened)

14. CATAMARAN DAY TOUR TO ISLA TABOGA

This is the perfect way to have an extraordinary day tour from Panama City, Panama.

Relax and discover the art of sailing on board the biggest open boat of the city while you sunbathe, lay down and enjoy the big deck with huge nets and speakers. The catamaran has shaded areas for those who need a break from the sun.

Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Panama city skyline, Cinta Costera and ships waiting to cross Panama Canal, until you reach the Island of Taboga on a 45-minute ride. During this time light snacks will be served.

After reaching Taboga, you sail to the back side of the island, to an amazing bay with beautiful natural views, where you will have the opportunity to jump off the boat and have your first swim! The catamaran also has stairs with direct access to the water.

Climb back into the boat to enjoy a cold beer while you sail to the the town side. Here you can visit the small village of Taboga. When you get back, lunch will be served on board of the catamaran and later, you will sail back to port. If the wind is favorable, the sails will be opened and the party continues!

This excursion includes return transfers from your hotel, snacks, lunch, an open bar and entertainment/music on board.

Duration: about 7 hrs

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2024 Guide with Photos

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2024 Guide with Photos

Panama is definitely one of the most beautiful countries worldwide. It has a rich history, fascinating culture, and a variety of historic sites including the famous Panama Canal. But Panama has so much more to offer. Its beaches are some of the best in the world and one of the reasons that Panama is the perfect vacation destination for you and your family. With coastline and islands along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Panama is home to some fantastic beaches. We have chosen the best beaches in Panama for you.

The beaches along Panama’s Pacific Coast are mainly long and wide with large waves, ideal for surfing. Meanwhile, the Caribbean side offers smaller beaches with calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The white-sand beaches and turquoise waters here rival the best of the Bahamas.

Having lived and worked in tourism in Panama for several years, I definitely have my favorite beaches. Here are some of the best beaches in Panama:

Best Caribbean Beaches in Panama

1. Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)

Guna Yala (San Blas Islands) may well be the best-kept secret in the Caribbean, although the beaches of San Blas have often been described as some of the best in the world. The development has been limited because the archipelago is controlled by the indigenous Guna tribe.
There is a total commitment to maintaining a wonderful natural environment. The sands are lovely and white and the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling. Scuba diving is not allowed. Accommodation is eco-friendly and mostly rustic but that’s the charm of this “paradise on earth” and my all-time favorite place.

The San Blas Islands are truly an amazing place to visit! The small islands with unspoiled beauty, turquoise water, white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, are absolutely stunning. The beaches in Guna Yala are without a doubt the best beaches in Panama and a visit here is the experience of a lifetime.

To get there, you can either book jeep transfers, oftentimes as a package that includes a couple of overnights, from Panama City or it is a short 30-minute flight from Panama City’s domestic airport.

2. Cayos Zapatillas (Bocas del Toro)

Bocas del Toro is part mainland and part archipelago and located right on the border with neighboring Costa Rica. The beaches of Bocas are the quintessential Caribbean … turquoise waters and white sands, coconuts growing from a fringe of bright green palms. Although I must caution you: If you visit the San Blas Islands first, not much else in Panama can compare to those beaches.

That being said the Zapatillas islands which are two idyllic mangrove islands in Bocas del Toro’s Bastimentos Island National Marine Park definitely belong to the best beaches in Panama. These islands are like something off a postcard. They have white-sand beaches, tropical forests, palm trees hanging over the turquoise Caribbean Sea, and coral gardens. The water is partly sheltered by a barrier reef and guarantees fine snorkeling. You may see nurse sharks and moray eels as well as much colorful fish. The uninhabited islands are an important nesting site for endangered sea turtles.

The Zapatillas islands can be best reached on a day tour offered by the many agencies in Bocas town, or ask us to organize a private boat tour for you and your family.

3. Red Frog Beach – Bocas del Toro

Next on our list of the best beaches in Panama is the most well-known of Bocas del Toro’s beaches, Red Frog Beach. It is located on Bastimentos Island and takes its name from the little red frogs that scramble along the shores. Red Frog Beach has a naturally beautiful setting, with lush vegetation just behind the beach. Sloths and monkeys live in the trees, while the marine life offshore is colorful and impressive.

There is usually a breeze and the waves in the clear blue waters make it a great spot for surfing. But beware! This beauty can have deadly riptides and dangerous currents.

The beach can be reached by water taxi from Colon Island, followed by a jungle hike to the other side of Bastimentos Island.

4. Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) – Bocas del Toro

Located near the Boca del Drago beach on Bocas’ main island, Isla Colon. Colorful starfishes can often be found in the clear blue waters here, hence the name (do no pick them up please). The palm trees provide a further contrast in color and give much-needed shade as well. You can rent kayaks, floating chairs, and water bikes by the hour to get you to the mangroves.

The beach is not very wide here but the water is calm and there is only a gentle slope into the water. Starfish Beach is clearly one of the most beautiful and swimmable beaches in the Bocas area, and one of the best beaches in all of Panama. It is a perfect place to visit on a Panama family vacation, especially for parents with small kids. Just avoid weekends when a lot of locals come here and it can get busy and loud. There are a couple of small restaurants close by.

You can visit Starfish Beach as part of an organized boat tour or take a bus or taxi from Bocas town to Boca del Drago and walk from there.

5. Isla Gamez and Isla Bolaños – Chiriqui province

Chiriquí province, so far mostly known as a mountain destination, has recently become known also as a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales can be found here.

The picturesque islands of Gamez and Bolaños are part of the Marine National Park in the Gulf of Chiriqui. Bolaños and Gamez both have amazing white sand beaches and lush vegetation with swaying palm trees. You will be able to see lots of colorful fish and turtles in its crystal clear waters. These islands are the perfect place to relax, snorkel, and just enjoy with family and friends.

Both are virgin islands and you might not see another soul all day. Make sure to bring everything you need with you.

Nearby Boca Chica acts as the gateway to both the Gulf of Chiriquí National Park and its islands. The natural beauty of this place is impressive, but it is still off-the-radar for most tourists.

The islands can be reached on a boat tour from Boca Chica which is about 1 hr drive from Panama’s second-biggest city, David.

6. Las Lajas – Chiriqui province

Las Lajas is a town located near the city of David in the Chiriquí province. It has one of the best beaches in Panama but remains relatively undiscovered. This little-known beach stretches for over 9 miles, and you can be completely alone walking for miles without seeing a soul.

Las Lajas beach is also popular because of the friendly waters and lack of strong waves. Although, on occasion, the waves can be favorable for bodyboarding or even surfing when the tides are right. On weekends, the beach brings many visitors to its brownish sands lined with palm trees.

Las Lajas Beach is best reached by rental car or on a self-drive tour as this can be an easy stop on your itinerary. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from David, Panama’s second-biggest city, or a 6-hour drive from Panama City.

7. Isla Coiba – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Isla Coiba, the largest island in Central America, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park. The island’s unspoiled white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and diverse wildlife attract travelers from around the world. The protected waters of Coiba Island offer fantastic spots for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Offshore, Granito de Oro is a small island with a beach and coral reef. In the water, you may see hammerhead sharks, whales, and manta rays, as well as other colorful marine life. It is often called “the Galapagos of Central America”. Why you’ve never heard of it? The former penal colony remains a Panama off-the-beaten-path destination due to its remote location and the restrictions of the nature reserve.

Most travelers arrive via an organized snorkel or dive tour leaving from Santa Catalina on the mainland. It’s not the easiest or cheapest place to get to, but so worth it. It is truly an amazing place.

8. Santa Catalina – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Until a few years ago, Santa Catalina was a tiny and mellow fishing village that saw virtually no visitors outside of Panamanian surfers. Santa Catalina’s somewhat remote location has kept Santa Catalina devoid of large tourist crowds, but the word is out, and people are starting to show up.

Located along the Pacific Ocean in the Veraguas province, it has some of the most consistent surf in the country and is the starting point for trips to Isla Coiba (see above). La Punta in Santa Catalina is the most popular surf break for the gurus. Playa El Estero is the perfect spot for beginner surfers with its small to medium-sized rolling waves. But even if you don’t surf, you will enjoy Santa Catalina’s beaches and laid-back vibe.

Santa Catalina is best reached by rental car from Panama City which is about 5 hours away or on a self-drive tour. There is no gas station, no ATM, no big grocery store in the village so come prepared.

9. Cambutal – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Cambutal is a laid-back beach town on the southern Azuero Peninsula. Mostly popular with surfers and deep-sea anglers, its attractive coastline will appeal to almost everyone. It is still an off-the-beaten-path destination. And although the first hotels have opened up in recent years, the area still lacks many facilities.

Cambutal’s dark sand beach is lovely and is surrounded by one of the peninsula’s few coastal forests.

Surfing is still a major reason that many travelers come here as the waves are nice and uncrowded. The fishing at Playa Cambutal is also quite good as the seafloor dives steeply just beyond the coastline, creating an area that’s ideal for large fish, including tuna, marlin, and grouper.

Aside from lounging along the beach, other activities in Playa Cambutal include ocean kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking. Playa Cambutal is also close to Cerro Hoya National Park. Although very remote, this park is one of the richest (and most untouched) parks in all of Panama. It’s also one of the last habitats for the endangered scarlet macaw in Panama.

Cambutal is about a 6-hour drive from Panama City and a good hour from Playa Venao. I’d recommend visiting it by rental car or on a self-drive tour.

10. Playa Venao – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Venao is one of the most beautiful and best beaches in Panama, stretching over two and a half miles of beautiful shoreline, and is seldom crowded. It is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay known for consistent waves, black sand beach, outdoor activities, comfortable accommodation, great food, and vibrant nightlife.

Playa Venao has become a hot destination for locals and overseas tourists alike. Together with Santa Catalina, it is famous for having the best surfing in Panama. Playa Venao offers consistent breaking waves for all skill levels, from beginner to professional.

But the area also offers many other recreational activities such as kite surfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, diving, snorkeling, hiking, and whale watching. Playa Los Destiladores is another beautiful beach close to the cute and traditional village of Pedasi.

Venao is located about 5.5 hrs drive from Panama City and can be easiest reached by rental car or as part of a self-drive tour.

11. Isla Iguana – Azuero Peninsula

Isla Iguana offers the only white-sand beach on the Azuero Peninsula, together with beautiful crystal clear waters. It is a secluded paradise, considered a wildlife refuge, inhabited only by rare birds, giant lizards (“iguana in Spanish”), and purple and red crabs.

The island is located off the shore of Pedasi and only accessible by boat. Isla Iguana is a snorkeling and diving paradise as it has the biggest area of well-preserved coral reefs in the Gulf of Panama with 14 different coral species, more than 350 tropical fishes, and over 200 species of invertebrates. In addition, several species of marine turtle come to the island to lay their eggs from April to September and humpback whales swim around these waters from June to November to mate.

This island offers two beaches to choose from: El Cirial is the main and larger beach. It has calm waves and is perfect to soak up the sun and take a nice swim in the amazing waters. El Faro is smaller and more secluded. It has stronger currents but is more popular for snorkeling. There is a hiking trail you can follow to go from one beach to the other.

The island can be reached from picturesque Pedasi town in Los Santos province. Make your way to nearby Playa Arenal and arrange with local fishermen to give you a return boat ride to Isla Iguana.

12. Isla Contadora – Pearl Islands (Islas Perlas)

Located 30 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama, Isla Contadora is the most developed place in the Pearl Islands (“Las Perlas”). The island is a popular beach escape for those wanting a break from Panama City. Contadora combines nature with sophistication; white-sand beaches and pelicans with exclusive villas and a few boutique hotels. But don’t expect a lot of restaurants or nightlife here. The island is rather quiet and can sometimes even feel deserted.

There are eleven beaches on the island. The most well-known might be Playa de las Suecas (translates to Beach of the Swedish), a pristine, charming, semi-hidden spot that also happens to be Panama’s only nude beach. Other popular beaches include Playa Galeón, Playa Cacique, and Playa Larga. For a true virgin island experience, it is also possible to take a boat to one of the archipelago’s uninhabited islands and beaches.

The water that surrounds Isla Contadora is ideal for different water activities. Diving and snorkeling are among the most popular. The island is only half a square mile so it’s easy to get everywhere. Transportation is largely limited to golf-carts, four-wheelers, scooters, and bicycles, all of which can be rented for the day. Or you can easily walk to many of the beautiful beaches.

To get to Isla Contadora, you can fly from Panama City in just 20 minutes or else take a rather costly but scenic 2-hour ferry, hence it is a bit far and expensive for a day tour.

Discover Paradise on Earth: The Ultimate Guide to the San Blas Islands

Discover Paradise on Earth: The Ultimate Guide to the San Blas Islands

Panama, located between the Pacific and the Caribbean, is the land bridge connecting Central and South America. Panama’s beautiful coastlines and archipelagoes attract many tourists, but those looking for a more secluded experience will find what they’re looking for on the San Blas Islands.

The Caribbean islands are relatively unknown to most, but they deserve to be much more famous. A group of picturesque islands inhabited only by the indigenous Guna tribe, the islands make for a magical experience.

The San Blas islands are home to pristine landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and communities of Guna. They host visitors keen to get a taste of island life without the bells and whistles associated with luxury resorts. Accommodation here is mostly backpacker-style with shared cabins and bathrooms – with a few exceptions.

The islands attract people from all over the world – but it’s not mass tourism. It is still pretty and quiet. I feel it is mostly known in the backpacker world but it really is a destination worth exploring for all ages and walks of life.

Where are the San Blas Islands?

The San Blas Islands is a group of islands which are located just off the Caribbean coast of Eastern Panama. There are 365 pieces of paradise scattered in the Caribbean. More than 300 of them are uninhabited. All are coated in coconut palms, and most are too small for Google Maps to bother with.

The name is really Guna Yala (“Guna territory”), after a name change in 2011, but as most people still call it San Blas, I will use that name for now.

How do I get to the San Blas Islands?

There are three ways to get to the islands:

– By flight
Flights to the San Blas islands are the most comfortable way to reach the islands. All flights leave from Panama City’s domestic airport Marcos Gelabert early in the morning. A prior overnight stay in Panama City is required. There are different little airstrips in the Guna territory. Depending on where you are planning to stay, a short flight might be the only option to get to some of the lodges.

Currently, the only flights to the islands are charter flights to reach the sail boats. Air Panama has not resumed these flights after COVID (as of Sept 2023).

– By 4×4 jeep transfer
The road into San Blas (Guna Yala) has vastly improved and is now accessible all year round. Only 4×4 or 4×2 vehicles are allowed in due to some steep hills. A windy twisty road leads from the Panamerican highway through beautiful jungle to the little “port” of Carti. An entry fee into the Guna territory is charged when entering, currently $20 per person. You will have to pay a $2 per person fee for leaving from Carti port. It will take you about 2.5-3 hours to drive non-stop from Panama City to the port in Carti and then another 30-45 minutes boat ride to get to “your” San Blas island.
Please note: As you are very close to the Colombian border there is a passport check with border patrol. Make sure to carry your original passports with you and in your hand luggage.

You could also rent a car and drive yourself

– By sailing boat
Sometimes you can find a boat that takes you from the Linton Bay Marina near Colon or from Portobelo to the San Blas Islands.
More common is the option to fly to Corazon de Jesus in the San Blas islands where you board your sailing boat to discover the San Blas islands.

You have different options to sail the San Blas Islands:
1. You can charter a cabin and share the catamaran with a maximum of 4 other people.
2. Or you can charter the whole sailboat including the captain. We offer different options, from monohull to luxury catamaran. Depending on the number of people and your budget.

This is the perfect way to spend any vacation: be it a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or a honeymoon! Enjoy the turquoise waters and the fine white-sanded beaches, explore the amazing underwater world and relax in the hammock with a fresh coconut in your hand – you will feel like Robinson Crusoe! Every day is a new adventure. Afraid of getting seasick? The sea at the San Blas Islands is very calm almost all year round. The windiest months are usually January to March.

Who inhabits the San Blas Islands?

The Guna, a tribe indigenous to Panama, run the islands and have fiercely protected the land, their culture, and their independence. That means no hotels, no chain restaurants, no foreign-owned anything. The best way to find a cell phone signal is by hunting for it on a dinghy. This is one of the reasons the San Blas Islands are not as well-known as The Bahamas or French Polynesia.

The Guna tribe is a small community of about 300,000. Around 50,000 live on the 49 major islands of San Blas. The Guna people live on the islands like they did hundreds of years ago: fishing with a line, and climbing trees and harvesting coconuts with their machetes. Tourists are an important part of how the Gunas make a living but are only allowed on a few islands where the Guna provide food and lodging.
The tribe has self-governing authority over the islands and a part of the mainland (their “comarca”). The Guna are quite remarkable. They are a matriarchal society, meaning all property is owned by the females. They are kind and happy people but please be polite and ask their permission before taking pictures of them in their beautiful colorful outfits, called Molas. In the Guna language, this means shirt or clothing. Molas make a unique and wonderful souvenir.

Spending time in the San Blas islands exposes you to a completely different side of Panama. When you get to know the hosts and their customs, keep an open mind, and remain respectful of your surroundings. Your stay in this part of the country will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Can I go island hopping on the San Blas Islands?

When you are on day trips and hire a boat and captain, yes. Otherwise, if you are looking to stay overnight on several islands, this is more difficult to arrange. Most boat transfers are from the port in Carti to the prebooked island lodge. Some close by islands can be explored on day trips from your lodge.
The best way to see several islands and to get to such beautiful places as Cayos Holandeses, the Dutch Cays, is to sail the San Blas islands, as mentioned above. These islands are further away and harder to reach.

Isla Aguja (translates to needle island, or Icodub in Guna language) – one of the islands close to Carti

Can I stay on the San Blas Islands? Are there San Blas Island hotels?

Tourists are only allowed on a few islands of San Blas and on these islands, the Guna provide food and lodging for them all year round. Accommodation consists mainly of backpacker lodges that can be reached by jeep via Carti port. But there exist a few more comfortable lodges. They are much better than the backpacker lodges near Carti but still rustic. There is no such thing as upscale or luxury accommodation on the islands. None of the lodges have AC or TV. One such example is the Yandup Island Lodge which can be reached only by flight.

The kind of lodge you are looking for depends on your budget, available time, and the kind of experience you are after. We can definitely help you decide.

Our Panama Family Adventure tour includes a stay in a basic San Blas island lodge reachable by jeep and boat.

Our favorite San Blas lodge, the Yandup Island Lodge, is only reachable by flight from Panama City, followed by a short boat ride.
It is a rustic family-owned lodge with 10 ocean-view and over-water cabins on a small private island near the Playon Chico community in Guna Yala. The island is surrounded by coral reefs and a small beach with white sand and crystal-clear water.
The bungalows have private bathrooms, double and single beds with orthopedic mattresses and mosquito nets, ceiling fans, 24-hour electricity powered by solar panels, hammocks, and wraparound porches with an incredible view. There is no tv or AC. The lodge offers tours to the rainforest, river, mangroves, waterfall, Playon Chico community, cemetery, and other uninhabited islands for swimming or snorkeling. Snorkelers can spot more than 75 species of coral, hundreds of varieties of tropical fish, and the occasional dolphin. Tours and meals are included in the package.

Check out our Highlights of Panama or Honeymoon Adventures in Panama tours that both include a stay in this lodge.

Unfortunately, Air Panama has not resumed flights to the San Blas Islands as of Sept 2023. So the “nicer” lodges such as the Yandup Island Lodge remain closed as they cannot be reached via road. I will update this article as soon as this changes.

What should I bring to the San Blas Islands?

What you should bring, depends on whether you’re planning on doing a day trip (not recommended in my opinion unless you literally only have one day) or are staying on the islands for a couple of nights (yes!!!). It is important that you do your research beforehand and to ensure you have all the essentials. A day of exploring only requires the basics: sunscreen, snacks, a big bottle of water, and adequate beachwear.

For an extended trip, however, you’ll have to factor in the realities of island living. Although the San Blas Islands, known also as Guna Yala comarca (independent territory), are not that far from modern Panama City, you will feel you have traveled in time to a whole different place. The San Blas islands are a very remote place. There are no ATMs so make sure to bring enough cash with you, preferably in small notes. Notes bigger than US$ 20 are not even accepted.

There are no big supermarkets so it’s best you bring everything you need with you. While many islands have a kiosk dedicated to selling souvenirs, soft drinks, and alcohol, it’s highly recommended that you bring your own supply of drinkable water. Most arranged transport from Panama City includes a stop at a supermarket, so stock up on a couple of 5L bottles and use them to refill smaller ones.

Suggested packing list

Other than food, water, snacks for in-between meals, and cash, here are some other items you’ll want to bring to San Blas. Keep in mind you’ll basically live in your swimsuit:

  • a sarong for the beach
  • a towel for showers (unless you are staying in the Yandup Island Lodge)
  • maybe a light sheet (sometimes there’s a breeze and it can get a bit cooler at night but you will probably be fine without)
  • your own snorkeling equipment
  • mosquito spray – there really are hardly any mosquitoes but more sand flies (especially at the port in Carti)
  • flip flops
  • light short and long-sleeve cotton clothing
  • hat
  • baby wipes or hand sanitizer
  • a good book or fully charged kindle
  • any medication you need
  • a camera or GoPro
  • a wet bag to save your electronics & valuables (alternatively a plastic bag) from the elements

Make sure to leave all your big luggage and suitcases in Panama City. Hotels will keep it for you free of charge. Neither the boats nor the jeeps have space for big luggage. And as you can see above, you really don’t need much on the islands. A large backpack will be perfect.

What else should I know about visiting the San Blas Islands?

Spending time in the San Blas islands exposes you to a completely different side of Panama. When you get to know the hosts and their customs, keep an open mind, and remain respectful of your surroundings. Your stay in this part of the country will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Also, life on the islands means that staying connected to the outside world may not be possible. Mobile network signals are often weak. Going off the grid may be daunting for some of you, but take it as an opportunity to have a distraction-free break. Just make sure to keep loved ones informed that you’ll be hard to reach for a few days to avoid potential worry. And enjoy this breathtakingly beautiful piece of land.

Conclusion:

The San Blas Islands are truly an amazing place to visit! The small islands with unspoiled beauty, turquoise water, white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, are absolutely stunning. But they are not well developed. Accommodations are very rustic. If beautiful peaceful destinations away from all the crowds are for you and you don’t mind basic accommodation … go! If you are a luxury traveler: avoid!

My personal opinion: I have been to countless countries, all continents (including Antarctica), and many of the most beautiful places in the world – and the San Blas islands are still my favorite place to visit. I can’t wait to go back there and show them to my sons! I know they will love them just as much as I do.

Visiting the San Blas Islands really is an adventure that you won’t want to miss.
