3 Incredible Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

3 Incredible Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

Costa Rica is a land of great wildlife, volcanoes, rain and cloud forests, huge waterfalls, and mighty rivers. It occupies a privileged spot with beaches in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. One of the best ways to experience Costa Rica’s diversity is on a road trip.
Some of the most interesting, little-explored destinations are only accessible by car, and for the adventurous traveler, there is simply no substitute for freedom. In some cases, the drive itself – and all the striking scenery along the way – becomes a highlight of your Costa Rica road trip.

Also, you experience the country beyond typical tourism by renting a car and hitting the road to explore the many sights of Costa Rica.

“You haven’t lived unless you’ve had at least one road trip in a tropical country.”

Below we give you 3 incredible Costa Rica road trip suggestions.

Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

Costa Rica Road Trip 1: San Jose to La Fortuna (about 4 hrs)

Costa Rica Road Trip 2: Monteverde to Playa Grande / Tamarindo (about 4-5 hrs)

Costa Rica Road Trip 3: San Jose to Santa Teresa (about 5 hrs)

1. Costa Rica Road Trip: San José to La Fortuna (about 4 hrs)

If you are arriving in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, and taking a road trip to La Fortuna, the drive is smooth and easy despite its curvy road. The trip ensures views of the beautiful national parks. The Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna is a popular tourist attraction.

Although currently in a resting phase, Arenal remained the country’s most active volcano for the past 43 years. … Since 2010, however, the volcano’s seismicity, explosions, and lava flows have decreased significantly. It is, scientists say, still alive; it is just sleeping.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

If you are leaving San Jose early in the morning and have all day for this Costa Rica road trip, here are some interesting places to stop along the way from San Jose to La Fortuna. A nice stop is La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

It is located about halfway between San Jose and La Fortuna. This park has 5 waterfalls and an animal sanctuary and is awesome for families.

Coffee Tours

If you’re interested in coffee, San Jose has some of the best coffee tours in Costa Rica. You can do a morning tour at Doka Coffee Estate. Or at Hacienda Alsacia – a Starbucks Coffee Farm. Yes, you read right. Starbucks owns a coffee farm! Purchased in 2013, Hacienda Alsacia is a 240-hectare coffee farm in Costa Rica that serves as a global Research and Development facility and working farm for Starbucks.

Rio Celeste

If you have plenty of time for this road trip in Costa Rica, do yourself a favor and include Rio Celeste in the plan. The dazzling centerpiece of Costa Rica’s Tenorio Volcano National Park, the “Celeste River”, is most famous for its shockingly bright blue color.

Arenal is good, but the volcanic eruptions and lava flow that made it a tourist destination stopped abruptly in 2010. Meanwhile, the country’s true natural wonder is as crazy Azul, the color of blue Gatorade, as ever. The forest surrounding the river is lush and wild, providing a home to an abundance of Costa Rican fauna, including the iconic jaguar.

2. Costa Rica Road Trip: Monteverde to Playa Grande (about 4-5 hrs)

Although some people don’t have the time to visit both, La Fortuna AND Monteverde, Monteverde is absolutely worth visiting. The cloud forests are incredibly unique and may disappear in this century so it’s worth making Monteverde part of your Costa Rica road trip to see them.

After visiting Monteverde, continue your road trip on roads with a mix of gravel and concrete and plenty of potholes, to the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Take a break from driving and stop at one of the “sopas”, small local restaurants.

Here you can indulge in authentic Costa Rican cuisine, from empanadas to fresh fish and patacones (deep-fried, flattened plantains).

Marino Las Baulas National Park and Playa Grande

Guanacaste’s coast is perfect for sunning, surfing, and spotting sea turtles. As part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande in Costa Rica is an important beach not just for surf lovers but for nature and wildlife. Located along the Tamarindo Bay, Playa Grande is perfect for those looking for a more low-key beach away from the bustling Tamarindo town.

With tan colored sand and bright blue waters, you don’t have to be a surfer to fall in love with Playa Grande. Separated from Playa Tamarindo by the Matapalo River, Playa Grande offers travelers a less crowded beach to catch the perfect wave or enjoy a nice long walk during sunset time.

Playa Grande is home to the Leatherback Sea Turtles. They lay eggs and build nests between October and March, and between April and September, the eggs hatch, and thousands of baby turtles hobble their way into the ocean.

3. Costa Rica Road Trip: San Jose to Santa Teresa (about 5 hrs)

This Costa Rica road trip includes a picturesque ferry ride leaving from Punta Arenas across the Gulf of Nicoya (yes, your car goes too!), and it only gets better from there. The roads are well paved until you reach the southern Nicoya Peninsula.

This area of the country is infamously known for its rough roads, though they are slowly improving. While the drive is not the smoothest, you are rewarded with breathtaking landscapes.

Curu Wildlife Refuge

Make sure to stop at the Curu Wildlife Refuge opposite Tortuga Island. The area protects several habitat types and is home to 232 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 87 species of reptiles, and more than 500 species of plants have been identified. There are trails offering diverse wildlife views, horseback riding tours & activities like snorkeling.

Tambor Beach

Continue your road trip and you will pass Tambor. It is located in a sheltered bay and therefore ideal for swimming. Due to the volcanic history of this area, the beach has a dark color. Numerous almond trees at Playa Tambor attract many beautiful Scarlet Macaws. Nearby Tango Mar Resort is a perfect Costa Rica escape and your dream of a beachfront vacation comes true! It is located on an incredibly beautiful beach which is definitely worth the drive here. If you are looking for calmness, this is the place. Great location, beautiful views, and well-maintained grounds.

Montezuma

Another nice place to stay on the Nicoya Peninsula is Montezuma. While Santa Teresa is very spread out, I felt Montezuma was a bit cozier. Montezuma is famous for its bohemian atmosphere and artsy hippie flair. It is a very picturesque beach town surrounded by mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, perfect for any beach bum or nature lover looking for a coastal escape.

One of the most charming things about the beaches around Montezuma is the tide pools. Since the coastline is so rocky, during low tide you can sit in the tide pools or see the many critters inside. And Montezuma Falls is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Costa Rica. The waterfalls are a set of three cascades that have something for everyone.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is the perfect destination for both relaxation and leisure. Its idyllic white-sand beaches are great for laying down a mat doing yoga or grabbing a surfboard and catching a wave. There is a wide variety of accommodation and dining options in Santa Teresa to meet every type of traveler’s needs.

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2023 Guide with Photos

The 12 Best Beaches in Panama – 2023 Guide with Photos

Panama is definitely one of the most beautiful countries worldwide. It has a rich history, fascinating culture, and a variety of historic sites including the famous Panama Canal. But Panama has so much more to offer. Its beaches are some of the best in the world and one of the reasons that Panama is the perfect vacation destination for you and your family. With coastline and islands along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, Panama is home to some fantastic beaches. We have chosen the best beaches in Panama for you.

The beaches along Panama’s Pacific Coast are mainly long and wide with large waves, ideal for surfing. Meanwhile, the Caribbean side offers smaller beaches with calm waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The white-sand beaches and turquoise waters here rival the best of the Bahamas.

Having lived and worked in tourism in Panama for several years, I definitely have my favorite beaches. Here are some of the best beaches in Panama:

Best Caribbean Beaches in Panama

1. Guna Yala (San Blas Islands)

Guna Yala (San Blas Islands) may well be the best-kept secret in the Caribbean, although the beaches of San Blas have often been described as some of the best in the world. The development has been limited because the archipelago is controlled by the indigenous Guna tribe.
There is a total commitment to maintaining a wonderful natural environment. The sands are lovely and white and the water is clear and perfect for snorkeling. Scuba diving is not allowed. Accommodation is eco-friendly and mostly rustic but that’s the charm of this “paradise on earth” and my all-time favorite place.

The San Blas Islands are truly an amazing place to visit! The small islands with unspoiled beauty, turquoise water, white-sand beaches, swaying palm trees, are absolutely stunning. The beaches in Guna Yala are without a doubt the best beaches in Panama and a visit here is the experience of a lifetime.

To get there, you can either book jeep transfers, oftentimes as a package that includes a couple of overnights, from Panama City or it is a short 30-minute flight from Panama City’s domestic airport.

2. Cayos Zapatillas (Bocas del Toro)

Bocas del Toro is part mainland and part archipelago and located right on the border with neighboring Costa Rica. The beaches of Bocas are the quintessential Caribbean … turquoise waters and white sands, coconuts growing from a fringe of bright green palms. Although I must caution you: If you visit the San Blas Islands first, not much else in Panama can compare to those beaches.

That being said the Zapatillas islands which are two idyllic mangrove islands in Bocas del Toro’s Bastimentos Island National Marine Park definitely belong to the best beaches in Panama. These islands are like something off a postcard. They have white-sand beaches, tropical forests, palm trees hanging over the turquoise Caribbean Sea, and coral gardens. The water is partly sheltered by a barrier reef and guarantees fine snorkeling. You may see nurse sharks and moray eels as well as much colorful fish. The uninhabited islands are an important nesting site for endangered sea turtles.

The Zapatillas islands can be best reached on a day tour offered by the many agencies in Bocas town, or ask us to organize a private boat tour for you and your family.

3. Red Frog Beach – Bocas del Toro

Next on our list of the best beaches in Panama is the most well-known of Bocas del Toro’s beaches, Red Frog Beach. It is located on Bastimentos Island and takes its name from the little red frogs that scramble along the shores. Red Frog Beach has a naturally beautiful setting, with lush vegetation just behind the beach. Sloths and monkeys live in the trees, while the marine life offshore is colorful and impressive.

There is usually a breeze and the waves in the clear blue waters make it a great spot for surfing. But beware! This beauty can have deadly riptides and dangerous currents.

The beach can be reached by water taxi from Colon Island, followed by a jungle hike to the other side of Bastimentos Island.

4. Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) – Bocas del Toro

Located near the Boca del Drago beach on Bocas’ main island, Isla Colon. Colorful starfishes can often be found in the clear blue waters here, hence the name (do no pick them up please). The palm trees provide a further contrast in color and give much-needed shade as well. You can rent kayaks, floating chairs, and water bikes by the hour to get you to the mangroves.

The beach is not very wide here but the water is calm and there is only a gentle slope into the water. Starfish Beach is clearly one of the most beautiful and swimmable beaches in the Bocas area, and one of the best beaches in all of Panama. It is a perfect place to visit on a Panama family vacation, especially for parents with small kids. Just avoid weekends when a lot of locals come here and it can get busy and loud. There are a couple of small restaurants close by.

You can visit Starfish Beach as part of an organized boat tour or take a bus or taxi from Bocas town to Boca del Drago and walk from there.

5. Isla Gamez and Isla Bolaños – Chiriqui province

Chiriquí province, so far mostly known as a mountain destination, has recently become known also as a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales can be found here.

The picturesque islands of Gamez and Bolaños are part of the Marine National Park in the Gulf of Chiriqui. Bolaños and Gamez both have amazing white sand beaches and lush vegetation with swaying palm trees. You will be able to see lots of colorful fish and turtles in its crystal clear waters. These islands are the perfect place to relax, snorkel, and just enjoy with family and friends.

Both are virgin islands and you might not see another soul all day. Make sure to bring everything you need with you.

Nearby Boca Chica acts as the gateway to both the Gulf of Chiriquí National Park and its islands. The natural beauty of this place is impressive, but it is still off-the-radar for most tourists.

The islands can be reached on a boat tour from Boca Chica which is about 1 hr drive from Panama’s second-biggest city, David.

6. Las Lajas – Chiriqui province

Las Lajas is a town located near the city of David in the Chiriquí province. It has one of the best beaches in Panama but still remains relatively undiscovered. This little-known beach stretches for over 9 miles, and you can be completely alone walking for miles without seeing a soul.

Las Lajas beach is also popular because of the friendly waters and lack of strong waves. Although, on occasions, the waves can be favorable for bodyboarding or even surfing when the tides are right. On weekends, the beach brings many visitors to its brownish sands lined with palm trees.

Las Lajas beach is best reached by rental car or on a self-drive tour as this can be an easy stop on your itinerary. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from David, Panama’s second-biggest city, or a 6-hour drive from Panama City.

7. Isla Coiba – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Isla Coiba, the largest island in Central America, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Park. The island’s unspoiled white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, coral reefs, and diverse wildlife attract travelers from around the world. The protected waters of Coiba Island offer fantastic spots for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Offshore, Granito de Oro is a small island with a beach and coral reef. In the water, you may see hammerhead sharks, whales, and manta rays, as well as other colorful marine life. It is often called “the Galapagos of Central America”. Why you’ve never heard of it? The former penal colony remains a Panama off-the-beaten-path destination due to its remote location and the restrictions of the nature reserve.

Most travelers arrive via an organized snorkel or dive tour leaving from Santa Catalina on the mainland. It’s not the easiest or cheapest place to get to, but so worth it. It is truly an amazing place.

8. Santa Catalina – Gulf of Chiriqui, Veraguas province

Until a few years ago, Santa Catalina was a tiny and mellow fishing village that saw virtually no visitors outside of Panamanian surfers. Santa Catalina’s somewhat remote location has kept Santa Catalina devoid of large tourist crowds, but the word is out, and people are starting to show up.

Located along the Pacific Ocean in the Veraguas province, it has some of the most consistent surf in the country and is the starting point for trips to Isla Coiba (see above). La Punta in Santa Catalina is the most popular surf break for the gurus. Playa El Estero is the perfect spot for beginner surfers with its small to medium-sized rolling waves. But even if you don’t surf, you will enjoy Santa Catalina’s beaches and laid-back vibe.

Santa Catalina is best reached by rental car from Panama City which is about 5 hours away or on a self-drive tour. There is no gas station, no ATM, no big grocery store in the village so come prepared.

9. Cambutal – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Cambutal is a laid-back beach town on the southern Azuero Peninsula. Mostly popular with surfers and deep-sea anglers, its attractive coastline will appeal to almost everyone. It is still an off-the-beaten-path destination. And although the first hotels have opened up in recent years, the area still lacks many facilities.

Cambutal’s dark sand beach is lovely and is surrounded by one of the peninsula’s few coastal forests.

Surfing is still a major reason that many travelers come here as the waves are nice and uncrowded. The fishing at Playa Cambutal is also quite good as the seafloor dives steeply just beyond the coastline, creating an area that’s ideal for large fish, including tuna, marlin, and grouper.

Aside from lounging along the beach, other activities in Playa Cambutal include ocean kayaking, horseback riding, and hiking. Playa Cambutal is also close to Cerro Hoya National Park. Although very remote, this park is one of the richest (and most untouched) parks in all of Panama. It’s also one of the last habitats for the endangered scarlet macaw in Panama.

Cambutal is about a 6-hour drive from Panama City and a good hour from Playa Venao. I’d recommend visiting it by rental car or on a self-drive tour.

10. Playa Venao – Azuero Peninsula

Playa Venao is one of the most beautiful and best beaches in Panama, stretching over two and a half miles of beautiful shoreline, and is seldom crowded. It is a beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay known for consistent waves, black sand beach, outdoor activities, comfortable accommodation, great food, and vibrant nightlife.

Playa Venao has become a hot destination for locals and overseas tourists alike. Together with Santa Catalina, it is famous for having the best surfing in Panama. Playa Venao offers consistent breaking waves for all skill levels, from beginner to professional.

But the area also offers many other recreational activities such as kite surfing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, fishing, diving, snorkeling, hiking, and whale watching. Playa Los Destiladores is another beautiful beach close to the cute and traditional village of Pedasi.

Venao is located about 5.5 hrs drive from Panama City and can be easiest reached by rental car or as part of a self-drive tour.

11. Isla Iguana – Azuero Peninsula

Isla Iguana offers the only white-sand beach on the Azuero Peninsula, together with beautiful crystal clear waters. It is a secluded paradise, considered a wildlife refuge, inhabited only by rare birds, giant lizards (“iguana in Spanish”), and purple and red crabs.

The island is located off the shore of Pedasi and only accessible by boat. Isla Iguana is a snorkeling and diving paradise as it has the biggest area of well-preserved coral reefs in the Gulf of Panama with 14 different coral species, more than 350 tropical fishes, and over 200 species of invertebrates. In addition, several species of marine turtle come to the island to lay their eggs from April to September and humpback whales swim around these waters from June to November to mate.

This island offers two beaches to choose from: El Cirial is the main and larger beach. It has calm waves and is perfect to soak up the sun and take a nice swim in the amazing waters. El Faro is smaller and more secluded. It has stronger currents but is more popular for snorkeling. There is a hiking trail you can follow to go from one beach to the other.

The island can be reached from picturesque Pedasi town in Los Santos province. Make your way to nearby Playa Arenal and arrange with local fishermen to give you a return boat ride to Isla Iguana.

12. Isla Contadora – Pearl Islands (Islas Perlas)

Located 30 miles off the Pacific coast of Panama, Isla Contadora is the most developed place in the Pearl Islands (“Las Perlas”). The island is a popular beach escape for those wanting a break from Panama City. Contadora combines nature with sophistication; white-sand beaches and pelicans with exclusive villas and a few boutique hotels. But don’t expect a lot of restaurants or nightlife here. The island is rather quiet and can sometimes even feel deserted.

There are eleven beaches on the island. The most well-known might be Playa de las Suecas (translates to Beach of the Swedish), a pristine, charming, semi-hidden spot that also happens to be Panama’s only nude beach. Other popular beaches include Playa Galeón, Playa Cacique, and Playa Larga. For a true virgin island experience, it is also possible to take a boat to one of the archipelago’s uninhabited islands and beaches.

The water that surrounds Isla Contadora is ideal for different water activities. Diving and snorkeling are among the most popular. The island is only half a square mile so it’s easy to get everywhere. Transportation is largely limited to golf-carts, four-wheelers, scooters, and bicycles, all of which can be rented for the day. Or you can easily walk to many of the beautiful beaches.

To get to Isla Contadora, you can fly from Panama City in just 20 minutes or else take a rather costly but scenic 2-hour ferry, hence it is a bit far and expensive for a day tour.

 Conclusion:

Skirting both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and with thousands of islands, Panama is home to some of the world’s best beaches. The Best Luxury Villas in Turks and Caicos in 2023

The Best Luxury Villas in Turks and Caicos in 2023

Turquoise waters and white-sand beaches are trademarks to the over forty islands and cays that make up the ‘Beautiful by Nature’ Turks and Caicos Islands. Considered the World’s best-kept secret, the Turks and Caicos Islands are an easy escape. Each island and cay in the archipelago is a destination on its own. The islands welcome visitors to enjoy the pristine beaches, indulge in world-class spas, delectable dining, culture, and local traditions. Experience some of the best and most luxurious accommodations the world has to offer: from beautiful resorts to luxury villas, Turks and Caicos has it all.

Turks and Caicos reopened its crystalline waters to travelers in July 2020. While many countries have closed their borders to Americans, the archipelago has joined Caribbean islands like Aruba, the Dominican Republic, and St. Lucia in welcoming US tourists. Restrictions apply.

We all know that families and friends are going to want to reunite, and eventually plan delayed celebrations for birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and so much more. So, let’s have a closer look at the luxury villas Turks and Caicos has to offer.

When you are ready to travel, consider the following wonderful luxury villa options for a Caribbean beach vacation and relax in your own private paradise.

Why You Should Choose One of the Luxury Villas in Turks and Caicos

The destination

With more than 230 miles of white-sand beaches, incredible turquoise seas, and some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs, the Turks and Caicos Islands are arguably the hidden gem of the Caribbean. They’re less than 90 minutes from Miami, and about a three-hour flight from New York City. Here, you’ll find historic villages barely touched by tourism and crystal-clear waters full of marine life, plus pristine beaches perfect for spending long, relaxing days. The Turks and Caicos are also home to the world’s third-largest barrier reef, after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and the Belize Barrier Reef, making it a premier diving destination. And, the people on the various islands are known for their friendliness.

The climate

The islands have one of the lowest annual rainfall averages in the region, which ensures plenty of sun-drenched days to enjoy its pristine beaches. As the Turks and Caicos are fairly close to the equator, the temperature doesn’t vary much from season to season. The “coldest” month of the year is December, with a pleasant daily high of 80°F (27°C) and a daily low of 73°F (23°C).

The privacy and space

In times of COVID and post-COVID you will be happy to enjoy one of the amazing luxury villas in Turks and Caicos to share just with your friends and family. Smaller boutique-style resorts and private villas mean less crowded spaces, less direct contact with the outside world, and fewer human interactions. On top of that, many resorts have large, open restaurants or open-air patios that you will be able to enjoy year-round.

The amenities and special services

Most Turks and Caicos private villas feature spacious bedrooms, modern bathrooms, expansive decks or patios, and breathtaking ocean views. They provide not only the comforts of home but also features and amenities that you are not likely to enjoy at home. Most beach house rentals feature well-equipped kitchens, modern audio and video systems, and washers and dryers should you wish to do some laundry while on vacation.

Many other services are often included with a villa rental. For example:

– Private Butler on-hand for every need
– VIP airport transfers, regardless of arrival/departure times
– Fast-track arrival and departure at the airport.
– Villa stocked with alcohol, mixers, soda, and waters
– Breakfast available to be served in the villa or enjoyed in the courtyard
– Designer bath and special turn-down scents
– Special kids’ amenities, books, toys, and baby monitors
– Dedicated Hobie Cat and other watersports equipment for villa guests

Additional add-on services are available, such as a private chef, kiteboarding/yoga/surf lessons, full villa grocery pre-stocking, live entertainment, dry cleaning services, and car rentals.

The celebrities

Turks and Caicos is also a hot spot for celebrities (think Justin Bieber, and Brad Pitt) looking to unwind and enjoy the “simple” luxuries with their closest friends or family members. Some of the resorts even ask you to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement).

Luxury Resort or Luxury Villas in Turks and Caicos – Which One is Right for You?

If you are with friends or family who want a more relaxed, less structured atmosphere where you can enjoy each other’s company, renting a luxury villa may be the answer. But if you are traveling with a group of friends whose interests and expectations for service vary widely, then a luxury resort hotel may offer an ideal solution.

Whether your preference is for total seclusion or fun in the sun, there is a Turks and Caicos villa rental that is ideally suited for you. Even though everyone has a different vision of the “perfect” beach, the Turks and Caicos Islands boast some of the world’s top-rated beaches. The white sand beach at Grace Bay on Provo was voted No. 1 on the Conde Nast Traveler 2019 list of the “World’s Best Beaches.”

Luxury villas are often close to some of the best beaches in Turks and Caicos. When you rent one of these luxury vacation homes, you can set up any level of service you desire. This includes regular housekeeping and laundry service, private chefs, butlers, in-villa masseuses, chauffeurs, and more. The luxury rental homes tend to be contemporary, with simple, minimalist interiors, lots of glass framing the views, comfortable furnishings, and neutral decor. The focus is on the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Amanyara – which means “peaceful place” – basks in unprecedented seclusion on the shores of an 18,000-acre nature preserve. Overlooking a pristine white sand beach and the turquoise waters of North West Point Marine National Park, the resort offers access to some of the finest scuba diving and snorkeling in the Turks and Caicos, as well as world-class restaurants, superb wellness facilities, and activities for the whole family.

The villas offer consummate privacy and space in natural surroundings. Generously proportioned living areas and three to six bedrooms are set around a black infinity pool and hardwood deck. Overlooking reflective ponds and gardens, several feature ocean views while others offer direct beach access. All are serviced by personal cooks and housekeepers.

Open-air Pavilions, many with direct access to the sea, put the focus on the surrounding landscape. They are nestled in coastal vegetation, overlooking ponds or the waters of Northwest Point Marine Reserve. Overhanging eaves shade terraces on three sides of each Pavilion, accessed via floor-to-ceiling glass doors that open to a combined bedroom and living area. Some offer private pools and two bedrooms.

The resort’s main dining venues include The Restaurant, The Beach Club, and The Bar, all serving seasonal menus incorporating the freshest produce available. Sushi, Caribbean cuisine, and local seafood are specialties.

Amanyara for Families:

With activities and facilities to appeal to all ages, Amanyara is a destination where family memories are made. Share unforgettable experiences together, or enjoy some adult time, knowing your children are safely entertained. 2. BEACH ENCLAVE VILLA RESORTS

Tucked away on secluded white-sand beaches, Beach Enclave is a collection of three distinct private luxury villa resorts. For each unique resort, the most pristine and stunning beachfront locations on the Turks and Caicos Islands were hand-selected. Beach Enclave’s roots are based in the Turks and Caicos Islands. As a Beach Enclave guest, you will spend your time enjoying truly meaningful connections with the people you are with. 7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

M

Even though Panama is mostly known for its famous Canal it has so much more to offer and does not need to be shy in comparison with other Latin American tourist destinations. In this post, we will look at some of the amazing highlights of Panama.

Panama has long been in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Costa Rica but that is slowly changing. One of the main reasons being the lower number of tourists that make Panama a more attractive destination. And Panama can easily keep up with Costa Rica with its breathtakingly beautiful Caribbean and Pacific islands, untouched rainforests, award-winning coffee farms, and its bustling metropolis Panama City.

Panama is also very close to my heart as I spent a few years working and living in this amazing little country that is so full of energy. And this is actually where I met my husband. Read on to find out exactly where!

Let’s look at some of the best places to visit in Panama.

Here are our Highlights of Panama:

1. Central America´s most attractive capital Panama City & its famous canal

For most of you, Panama City will be your port of entry into the country. The city’s impressive skyline reminds us of Miami or New York and in the last few years, many hotels have opened in high-rise buildings and offer breathtaking views!

Sights of Panama City

Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo is the historic center and also the hippest and most elegant part.

Many Colonial buildings are being restored to their original glory and often house beautiful courtyards, interesting galleries, restaurants or bars – often with a rooftop from where you can enjoy the skyline of the modern city.

Most of the city´s vibrating nightlife takes place here too. Not far from here is the Causeway Amador which connects four small islands offshore. A palm-lined road runs the length of the causeway, with benches, parks, and a path for bicycling and jogging alongside.

The ruins of Panama Viejo are the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country. It is located in the suburbs of the modern city. Together with the historic Casco Antiguo, it has been a World Heritage Site since 1997.

The famous Panama Canal

And last but not least the famous Panama Canal: A visit to what is often called “The Eighth Wonder of the World” is a must. You can either visit the famous Miraflores Visitor Center and Locks located a few minutes outside of the city where you will be able to watch the huge ships and freighters pass, often with just a few inches on both sides, through the locks.

Another option is to book a partial or complete transit through the Panama Canal on a tourist boat.

Last but not least, the city is a great starting point for multiple excursions into the surroundings of Panama City.

You can visit indigenous tribes, go hiking or bird watching. Or you can board the train along the Panama Canal which takes you to Colón on the Atlantic side and returns in the late afternoon – it runs only Monday to Friday and not on holidays. Be careful: Colón is not a safe place.

2. The breathtakingly beautiful San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) – my personal highlight of Panama

My personal favorite of the highlights of Panama!! These islands are a real tropical paradise that cannot be missed. They are located on the Caribbean coast of Panama and stretch all the way to Colombia. Home to the indigenous Guna tribe, you actually pay an entry fee to visit their territory or “comarca”, the 365 islands are a must-visit if you are willing to play it rough for a few nights.

Accommodation is rather basic and often backpacker-style with shared bathrooms. And who would have thought, that exactly on one of these dreamlike islands is where I met my now-husband!

But there are exceptions if you are ok with flying to the islands further south. Here more upscale but still rustic cabins (without AC or TV) can be found, for example, the Yandup Island Lodge.

Trips are usually sold as a package including transportation, overnights and full pension as most islands have no restaurants or shops. Make sure to bring your original passport (being so close to Colombia you will pass border patrol) and everything else you need for your stay including small change for optional tours or souvenirs such as the beautiful hand-made molas.

Another option is to go sailing and explore the islands that way – either on a private sailing boat or shared with a small group of international travelers.

3. Whale watching in the Pearl Islands

The Pearl Islands of Panama is an archipelago that covers around 250 small islands of which most are uninhabited.

The locals call the islands Islas de las Perlas, a name that dates back from Spanish colonial times. The Spanish Conquistadors discovered the islands in 1503 and gave the Islands its name due to the great amounts of pearls found on them.

The islands are nowadays most famous for their spectacular white-sand deserted beaches and for whale watching. Did you know that Panama is the only place in the world where Humpback whales from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres come to breed and give birth?

Thousands of Humpbacks migrate northwards from their summer feeding grounds around Antarctica, arriving in the region from July through September/October.

They breed and give birth to their calves in the warm, shallow and safe waters that can be found in Panama just a few miles off-shore from Panama City and along the entire Pacific coast. The chance to see whales here is over 95%!

Interesting for tourists is mainly the small and sleepy Contadora Island which holds a few 2 to 3-star hotel options. The island can be easily reached from Panama City, either by a 2-hour ferry ride or a 25-minute flight.

4. The Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro

Another one of my personal favorites of the highlights of Panama: The archipelago of “Bocas” is located close to the border to Costa Rica on the Caribbean side of Panama. It can be reached by plane (from Panama City or San José / Costa Rica) or by a 30-minute water taxi ride from the mainland´s port town of Almirante. The main island Colón (Spanish for Columbus) houses most hotels, restaurants, and bars.

If you prefer a quieter experience check out the B&Bs at nearby Playa Bluff beach or on the neighboring islands of Bastimentos, Carenero, or Cristobal. Most hotels are not located near a swimming beach due to the many mangroves in the area.

Bocas is rather considered an active beach vacation as most times you are required to take a water taxi to the different islands and beaches. You can book excursions with most hotels or in Bocas town, or we can include them in your Panama vacation package.

Another option is to rent bicycles, kayaks, quads, or SUPs for a more active experience. The islands have it all: relax quietly or party all day long!

We also visit the islands of Bocas del Toro on our Best of Panama tour.

5. Local life on the Azuero Peninsula

Often called the “cradle of Panama’s culture” you will surely get to know more about Panamanian traditions with a visit to the Azuero Peninsula. Here, life is slow and people are friendly. The region is famous for religious festivals dating back to Spanish colonial times and it also houses Panama’s best Carnival celebration in Chitré and Las Tablas.

Around the small town of Pedasí, you will find white-sanded beaches, diving, sport-fishing, and horse-back riding.

Nearby Playa Venao is known for its world-class surfing. Thousands of sea turtles can be viewed both nesting and hatching on Isla Cañas, a Wildlife Reserve, not far from Venao. Four of the eight known turtle species in Panama nest here.

Turtle hatching can be observed July-November. A visit to the island Isla Iguana is a must, especially in the whale-watching season from July to October. It can be easily reached by boat from Playa Arenal. Watching some of the gigantic humpback whales breach, would surely make your highlights of Panama list.

Here you find a nice sheltered beach with great snorkeling but also the giant iguanas that gave the place the name. The region around Pedasi, but also the Azuero Peninsula in general, is becoming more and more popular with retired expats!

6. Panama’s premier mountain destination and adventure sports capital: Boquete

Located in the Chiriquí province, close to the border with Costa Rica, it offers not only spectacular mountain scenery with a lush flora and fauna, award-winning coffee farms and a spring-like climate but also a great variety of outdoor adventure that ranges from river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, canopy and suspension bridge tours to relaxed coffee tours, golf and bird-watching tours.

Active travelers can climb the Baru Volcano, an inactive volcano which towers over the area with majestic views.

The locals in Boquete are friendly, the town is quaint and easy to get around in and is frequently selected as one of the best places in the world to retire.

7. The up-and-coming destination of Boca Chica

In Chiriquí National Marine Park, near the Costa Rican border, lies a stunning new coast and island destination known as Boca Chica. It offers pristine ocean views, lush vegetation and picturesque uninhabited islands of white sand and swaying palms.

Chiriquí province, famous as a mountain destination, is now also a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, thick majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales are there for your viewing pleasure.

Just starting to develop as a destination it already has several very attractive lodgings options, from a family-owned boutique hotel to a luxurious private island retreat.

*****

Conclusion:

Panama is an amazing place. With its breathtakingly beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and its Highlands full of adventure sports options, the tiny country can be as adventurous or as chilled as you want it to be.
