Visiting Costa Rica is a great idea for a family vacation! The country is pretty safe, the food is amazing and the weather is perfect for exploring and playing outside. This 10-day Costa Rica itinerary gives you a balanced mix of all the best of Costa Rica.

Costa Rica offers many natural wonders: from rainforests to volcanoes, tropical beaches, and more. 10 days is a good length of time to visit Costa Rica with kids, as your itinerary will be filled with fun activities but won’t drag on too long.

When planning a trip to Costa Rica with kids, or any other Central America family vacation, consider staying at least 2 to 3 nights at each location. You will find that your kids are actually less exhausted when you slow travel. That is because they are less likely to get overwhelmed. Being constantly on the move is exhausting for everyone, but especially for kids. And it can be overwhelming on top of exhausting for little ones.

We have included boutique hotels that are able to host a family of 4 or 5 comfortably. You will not only find accommodations mentioned but also the room categories perfect for hosting a family.

With so much to discover in this Central American country, I’d recommend a minimum of 10 days. This will allow you to tick off the main activities without rushing or running on empty.

The following 10-day Costa Rica itinerary will give you some great ideas for your route. It is designed to provide a balanced mix of all the best of Costa Rica.

Here is a sample 10-day Costa Rica itinerary that starts and ends in Costa Rica’s most popular airport in the capital San Jose. It takes you to the nearby Central Valley, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde with its cloud forests, and ends at Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, before returning to San Jose for your flight back home.
Each of these destinations is easy to get to. But they are very different in terms of landscapes and activities. Some have wildlife, rain forests, and cloud forests, and some have beaches. This slow travel itinerary is ideal for nature and beach-loving families.

Day 1: Arrive in San Jose & Transfer to the Central Valley

Individual arrival at the international airport where your driver awaits you. Private transfer of about 45 min to your first accommodation.

We suggest staying outside of the noisy capital and starting your Costa Rica Itinerary with a stay at the beautiful Xandari Resort. It is located in the Central Valley which is strikingly beautiful and disposes of a mild and dry climate all year round.

It captivates guests with its unique and creative ambiance. The spectacular view of the Central Valley, the garden, and the swimming pool are equally impressive.

Day 2: Explore and Relax in the Central Valley

Day 3: Discover Arenal Volcano

Today your 10-day Costa Rica itinerary takes you to La Fortuna which is about 2.5 hours away. La Fortuna is a small town located northwest of the capital, San José. It is known as a gateway to Arenal Volcano National Park, comprising 2 volcanoes. Hot springs dot the foot of the volcano, on the thermal Tabacón River. The dormant Chato Volcano has a crater lake and rainforest trails leading to La Fortuna Waterfall, with its natural pool.

In the late afternoon join a 2-hour Night Walk:  When the sun sets across the park, a different side of the Costa Rican rainforest comes to life under the cover of darkness. Join a guided night walk through Arenal Natura Ecological Park for a chance to see all of the nocturnal creatures that call the park home. Explore the forested trails of this private nature reserve and listen as the jungle comes alive with the activity of nocturnal animals like sloths, armadillos, night birds, and more than 20 species of frogs!

The hotel offers its visitors a variety of private trails and its own canopy tour. Apart from the amazing volcano view, the main attraction is the pool park: 14 pools of which 13 are thermo-mineral pools. Natural hot springs water is pumped up to the highest hill of the property and flows down to the main pool area.

The spacious Villas provide a living room and two bedrooms. The master bedroom is equipped with a King-size bed and a single sofa bed and features a jacuzzi in the bathroom. The second bedroom comes with a double bed and a single bed. In front of the living room, you also find a nice balcony with a beautiful view of the volcano.

Day 4: Caño Negro & Rio Frio Boat Tour

Caño Negro actually means “Black Canyon” in Spanish – but quite the contrary, Caño Negro should have been named “Green Canyon” thanks to its rich heritage when it comes to biodiversity. Wetlands, native and migratory birds, sloths, caimans, and a great variety of trees, flowers, and plants.

First, you drive to Los Chiles, one of the northernmost villages in Costa Rica. Once there, you will come on board a little boat, embarking on a sort of floating safari, passing through verdant pastures and forests. The knowledgeable guide will be very helpful pointing at different animals, trees, and incredible rarely-seen birds and will share their secrets with you.

Duration: approx. 9 hours

Day 5: Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve & Coffee Tour

Off to the mountains, you go today – all the way to Monteverde – via road and boat crossing the Lago de Arenal. The transfer takes about 3h 30 min. There is a faster route without crossing Arenal Lake but this one is the more scenic route and I’d definitely recommend taking it. You will find out why once you are there and can thank me later!

Monteverde is home to one of the rarest habitats on Earth, the cloud forest, and an astounding variety of flora and fauna. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is unique from Costa Rica’s other rainforests, with a constant mist that looks like clouds and gives the forest its name.

Monteverde is a destination of bucket list experiences. Its ecosystems are home to some of the world’s rarest wildlife. In Costa Rica’s tropical highlands, there is seldom a dull day. Monteverde’s famous canopy tours include miles of cables, multiple platforms, and unimaginable views above the clouds.

Looking for a less exciting experience? Learn about the fascinating history of Costa Rican coffee and chocolate and try your hand at making some sweet sugar cane juice too. Or trot and gallop along scenic forest trails and up into mountains on horse-back.

Afternoon suggestion: Don Juan Coffee Tour

The Don Juan coffee tour is a real experience of family history and tradition. You will be invited to take a look into the world of coffee and be introduced to the history of coffee in Costa Rica and its socio-economic development. And you will learn a lot about chocolate as well as sugarcane, as both contribute to Costa Rican culture. So, this is 3 in 1 – living history.

Many people know it as “No shoes, no shirt, Nosara,” which aptly sums things up. Located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the Guanacaste region, the traditional village of Nosara sits six kilometers inland, although the beaches are the biggest draw.

PANAMA:

1. Bocas del Toro

Only a one-hour flight from Panama City, you will find this hidden gem honeymoon destination in Panama.

These islands feel like you have been transported into a whole new country. The beaches surrounding Bocas are lined with dazzling turquoise waters, sparkling white sands, and plenty of coconut trees, and mangroves!

Highlights in the park include the towering Barú Volcano and Los Quetzales Trail, which offers sightings of the elusive quetzal bird. Boquete is also Panama’s adventure capital: From ziplining to rafting, horseback riding to hiking over suspension bridges, this region has it all.

When you want a rest from all those fun activities, enjoy the lovely local festivals during the months of December through April. Watch the parades of flowers during the La Feria de las Flores y del Café, or enjoy some local jazz music during the Boquete Jazz and Blues Festival.

3. San Blas Islands (Guna Yala)

Literally meaning “The Fortune,” in Spanish, La Fortuna is one of the most beloved honeymoon destinations in Costa Rica and Central America.

Hidden at the base of the Arenal Volcano, the town of La Fortuna has so many beautiful sights for couples to explore. The town center is a gorgeous park filled with bright, colorful gardens and a magnificent church. It is a fantastic spot to go for a nice walk and enjoy some of the local cuisines.

But the main reason for La Fortuna’s popularity is the plethora of activities. You can do almost all of Costa Rica’s adventure tours out of La Fortuna. You can explore the rainforest canopy on a hanging bridge, fly through the sky on a zip line, rappel down waterfalls, go whitewater rafting, and hike through lava fields in the Arenal Volcano National Park to get the best views in Costa Rica.

After a full day of activities, there’s nothing better than to soak in one of La Fortuna’s geothermally heated hot springs.

5. Uvita

Uvita is a small village in the South Pacific, one of the best places in Costa Rica for a tranquil tropical vacation or honeymoon. It is filled with incredible beaches, mystical mangrove swamps, and beautiful estuaries. The best part about Uvita is its laid-back atmosphere where you can enjoy a relaxing honeymoon in the soft ocean waves.

From December to April, visit the Marino Ballena National Park to see the humpback whale migration. It is an incredibly unique experience that most don’t get to see.

Costa Rica is known for its surf and yoga schools, and Uvita is no exception. As a bonus, this happens to be a particularly good stretch of coastline for families and beginners. For more advanced surfers, drive a few miles north to Dominical — a mecca that attracts surfers from around the world.

Both Uvita and Dominical are great honeymoon spots if you like regions that are less developed than other more popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica, such as Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. We do!

6. Osa Peninsula

This rainforest destination is a must-go honeymoon destination for those who want the best of both worlds.

Located on the Southern Pacific coast, the Osa Peninsula is surrounded by lush rainforests but also borders the ocean creating some of the best-secluded beaches in Costa Rica. One day you can hike and explore the waterfalls of the Corcovado National Park, and the next go snorkeling in the ocean!

The Osa Peninsula is known for its biodiversity, so you are bound to see many animals in the wild that you wouldn’t typically see.

7. Puerto Viejo

The village of Cahuita, about 10 miles north of Puerto Viejo, is worth visiting and is home to an awesome national park. This is where the jungle meets the sea. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has something for everyone. NICARAGUA

8. San Juan del Sur

Known for its exceptional surfing beaches, San Juan is the go-to honeymoon spot for active couples that like a good party. 11. Placencia

The tropical island of Holbox is located just north of Cancun and is surrounded by crystal-clear waters, and has that island laidback feel to it. 7 Highlights of Panama You Won’t Want to Miss

Even though Panama is mostly known for its famous Canal it has so much more to offer and does not need to be shy in comparison with other Latin American tourist destinations. In this post, we will look at some of the amazing highlights of Panama.

Panama has long been in the shadow of its more famous neighbor Costa Rica but that is slowly changing. One of the main reasons being the lower number of tourists that make Panama a more attractive destination. And Panama can easily keep up with Costa Rica with its breathtakingly beautiful Caribbean and Pacific islands, untouched rainforests, award-winning coffee farms, and its bustling metropolis Panama City. Panama is also very close to my heart as I spent a few years working and living in this amazing little country that is so full of energy. And this is actually where I met my husband. Read on to find out exactly where!

Let’s look at some of the best places to visit in Panama.

Here are our Highlights of Panama:

1. Central America´s most attractive capital Panama City & its famous canal

For most of you, Panama City will be your port of entry into the country. The city’s impressive skyline reminds us of Miami or New York and in the last few years, many hotels have opened in high-rise buildings and offer breathtaking views!

Sights of Panama City

Casco Antiguo or Casco Viejo is the historic center and also the hippest and most elegant part.

Many Colonial buildings are being restored to their original glory and often house beautiful courtyards, interesting galleries, restaurants or bars – often with a rooftop from where you can enjoy the skyline of the modern city.

Most of the city´s vibrating nightlife takes place here too. Not far from here is the Causeway Amador which connects four small islands offshore. A palm-lined road runs the length of the causeway, with benches, parks, and a path for bicycling and jogging alongside.

The ruins of Panama Viejo are the remaining part of the old Panama City and former capital of the country. It is located in the suburbs of the modern city. Together with the historic Casco Antiguo, it has been a World Heritage Site since 1997.

And last but not least the famous Panama Canal: A visit to what is often called “The Eighth Wonder of the World” is a must. You can either visit the famous Miraflores Visitor Center and Locks located a few minutes outside of the city where you will be able to watch the huge ships and freighters pass, often with just a few inches on both sides, through the locks.

Another option is to book a partial or complete transit through the Panama Canal on a tourist boat.

The city is a great starting point for day tours from Panama City.

You can visit indigenous tribes, go hiking or bird watching. Or you can board the train along the Panama Canal which takes you to Colón on the Atlantic side and returns in the late afternoon – it runs only Monday to Friday and not on holidays. Be careful: Colón is not a safe place.

2. The breathtakingly beautiful San Blas Islands (Guna Yala) – my personal highlight of Panama

My personal favorite of the highlights of Panama!! These islands are a real tropical paradise that cannot be missed. They are located on the Caribbean coast of Panama and stretch all the way to Colombia. Home to the indigenous Guna tribe, you actually pay an entry fee to visit their territory or “comarca”, the 365 islands are a must-visit if you are willing to play it rough for a few nights.

Accommodation is rather basic and often backpacker-style with shared bathrooms. And who would have thought that exactly on one of these dreamlike islands is where I met my now-husband!

Trips are usually sold as a package including transportation, overnights and full pension as most islands have no restaurants or shops. Make sure to bring your original passport (being so close to Colombia you will pass border patrol) and everything else you need for your stay including small change for optional tours or souvenirs such as the beautiful hand-made molas.

Another option is to go sailing and explore the islands that way – either on a private sailing boat or shared with a small group of international travelers.

3. Whale watching in the Pearl Islands

The Pearl Islands of Panama is an archipelago that covers around 250 small islands of which most are uninhabited.

The locals call the islands Islas de las Perlas, a name that dates back from Spanish colonial times. The Spanish Conquistadors discovered the islands in 1503 and gave the Islands its name due to the great amounts of pearls found on them.

The islands are nowadays most famous for their spectacular white-sand deserted beaches and for whale watching. Did you know that Panama is the only place in the world where Humpback whales from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres come to breed and give birth?

Thousands of Humpbacks migrate northwards from their summer feeding grounds around Antarctica, arriving in the region from July through September/October.

They breed and give birth to their calves in the warm, shallow and safe waters that can be found in Panama just a few miles off-shore from Panama City and along the entire Pacific coast. The chance to see whales here is over 95%!

Interesting for tourists is mainly the small and sleepy Contadora Island which holds a few 2 to 3-star hotel options. The island can be easily reached from Panama City, either by a 2-hour ferry ride or a 25-minute flight.

4. The Caribbean islands of Bocas del Toro

Another one of my personal favorites of Panama’s highlights is the archipelago of “Bocas,” located close to the border to Costa Rica on the Caribbean side of Panama. It can be reached by plane (from Panama City or San José / Costa Rica) or by a 30-minute water taxi ride from the mainland towns of Almirante or Chiriqui Grande.

The main island, Colón (Spanish for Columbus), houses most hotels, restaurants, and bars.

If you prefer a quieter experience, check out the B&Bs at nearby Playa Bluff Beach or on the neighboring islands of Bastimentos, Carenero, or Cristobal. Most Bocas del Toro hotels are not located near a swimming beach due to the many mangroves in the area.

Bocas is rather considered an active beach vacation as most times you are required to take a water taxi to the different islands and beaches. You can book excursions with most hotels or in Bocas town, or we can include them in your Panama vacation package.

Another option is to rent bicycles, kayaks, quads, or SUPs for a more active experience. The islands have it all: relax quietly or party all day long!

5. Local life on the Azuero Peninsula

Often called the “cradle of Panama’s culture” you will surely get to know more about Panamanian traditions with a visit to the Azuero Peninsula. Here, life is slow and people are friendly. The region is famous for religious festivals dating back to Spanish colonial times and it also houses Panama’s best Carnival celebration in Chitré and Las Tablas.

Around the small town of Pedasí, you will find white-sanded beaches, diving, sport-fishing, and horse-back riding.

Nearby Playa Venao is known for its world-class surfing. Thousands of sea turtles can be viewed both nesting and hatching on Isla Cañas, a Wildlife Reserve, not far from Venao. Four of the eight known turtle species in Panama nest here.

Turtle hatching can be observed July-November. A visit to the island Isla Iguana is a must, especially in the whale-watching season from July to October. It can be easily reached by boat from Playa Arenal. Watching some of the gigantic humpback whales breach, would surely make your highlights of Panama list.

Here, you find a nice sheltered beach with great snorkeling and the giant iguanas that gave the place its name. The region around Pedasi, and the Azuero Peninsula in general, is becoming increasingly popular with retired expats!

6. Panama’s premier mountain destination and adventure sports capital: Boquete

Located in the Chiriquí province, close to the border with Costa Rica, it offers not only spectacular mountain scenery with a lush flora and fauna, award-winning coffee farms and a spring-like climate but also a great variety of outdoor adventure that ranges from river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, canopy and suspension bridge tours to relaxed coffee tours, golf and bird-watching tours.

Active travelers can climb the Baru Volcano, an inactive volcano which towers over the area with majestic views.

The locals in Boquete are friendly, the town is quaint and easy to get around in and is frequently selected as one of the best places in the world to retire.

7. The up-and-coming destination of Boca Chica

In Chiriquí National Marine Park, near the Costa Rican border, lies a stunning new coast and island destination known as Boca Chica. It offers pristine ocean views, lush vegetation and picturesque uninhabited islands of white sand and swaying palms.

Chiriquí province, famous as a mountain destination, is now also a new world-class beach and island destination. Warm sandy beaches, swaying palm trees, thick majestic mangrove forests teeming with exotic wildlife and birds (think toucans, monkeys, and more), as well as a glorious undersea world including dolphins and whales are there for your viewing pleasure.

Just starting to develop as a destination it already has several very attractive lodgings options, from a family-owned boutique hotel to a luxurious private island retreat.

Conclusion:

Panama is an amazing place. With its breathtakingly beautiful beaches on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, and its Highlands full of adventure sports options, the tiny country can be as adventurous or as chilled as you want it to be.

Panama, located between the Pacific and the Caribbean, is the land bridge connecting Central and South America. Panama’s beautiful coastlines and archipelagos attract many tourists, but those seeking a more secluded experience will find what they want on the San Blas Islands.

The Caribbean islands are relatively unknown to most, but they deserve to be better known. A group of picturesque islands inhabited only by the indigenous Guna tribe, they offer a magical experience.

The San Blas islands are home to pristine landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and Guna communities. They host visitors keen to get a taste of island life without the bells and whistles associated with luxury resorts. Accommodation here is mostly backpacker-style with shared cabins and bathrooms – with a few exceptions.

The islands attract people from all over the world – but it’s not mass tourism. It is still pretty and quiet. I feel it is mostly known in the backpacker world, but it really is a destination worth exploring for all ages and walks of life.

Where are the San Blas Islands?

The San Blas Islands are a group of islands off the Caribbean coast of eastern Panama. 365 pieces of paradise are scattered across the Caribbean. More than 300 of them are uninhabited. All are coated in coconut palms, and most are too small for Google Maps to bother with.

The name is really Guna Yala (“Guna territory”), after a 2011 name change, but since most people still call it San Blas, I will use that name for now.

How do I get to the San Blas Islands?

There are three ways to get to the islands:

– By flight
Flights to the San Blas Islands are the most comfortable way to get there. All flights leave early in the morning from Panama City’s domestic airport, Marcos Gelabert. You must stay overnight in Panama City beforehand. Currently, the only flights to the islands are private flights to El Porvenir. We can also quote helicopter transfers or day/overnight tours. Just ask.

– By 4×4 jeep transfer
The road into San Blas (Guna Yala) has improved significantly and is now accessible year-round. Only 4×4 or 4×2 vehicles are allowed because of some steep hills. A windy, twisty road leads from the Panamerican highway through beautiful jungle to the little “port” of Carti.

An entry fee into the Guna territory is charged when entering, currently $20 per person. You will have to pay a $2 per person fee for leaving from Carti port. It will take about 2.5-3 hours to drive non-stop from Panama City to the port in Carti, then another 30-45 minute boat ride to get to “your” San Blas island.
Please note: As you are very close to the Colombian border, there is a passport check with border patrol. Make sure to carry your original passports with you and in your hand luggage.

– By sailing boat
Sometimes you can find a boat that takes you from the Linton Bay Marina near Colón or from Portobelo to the San Blas Islands.
A more common option is to fly to Corazón de Jesús in the San Blas Islands, where you board your sailing boat to explore the San Blas Islands.

You have different options to sail the San Blas Islands:
1. You can charter a cabin and share the catamaran with a maximum of 4 other people.
2. Or you can charter the whole sailboat, including the captain. We offer different options, from monohull to luxury catamaran. Depending on the number of people and your budget.

Afraid of getting seasick? The sea at the San Blas Islands is very calm almost year-round. The windiest months are usually January to March.

Who inhabits the San Blas Islands?

The Guna, an indigenous tribe from Panama, run the islands and have fiercely protected the land, their culture, and their independence. That means no hotels, no chain restaurants, no foreign-owned anything. The best way to find a cell phone signal is by hunting for it on a dinghy. This is one reason the San Blas Islands are not as well known as The Bahamas or French Polynesia.

The Guna tribe is a small community of about 300,000. Around 50,000 live on the 49 major islands of San Blas. The Guna people live on the islands like they did hundreds of years ago: fishing with a line, climbing trees, and harvesting coconuts with their machetes.

Tourists are an important part of how the Guna make a living but are only allowed on a few islands where the Guna provide food and lodging.

The tribe has self-governing authority over the islands and a part of the mainland (their “comarca”). The Guna are quite remarkable. They are a matriarchal society, meaning women own all property. They are kind and happy people, but please be polite and ask their permission before taking pictures of them in their beautiful, colorful outfits, called Molas. In the Guna language, this means shirt or clothing. Molas make a unique and wonderful souvenir.

Spending time in the San Blas islands exposes you to a completely different side of Panama. When you get to know the hosts and their customs, keep an open mind and remain respectful of your surroundings. Your stay in this part of the country will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Can I go island hopping on the San Blas Islands?

Yes, if you’re on day trips and hire a boat and a captain.

If you want to stay overnight on several islands, it’s harder to arrange. Most boat transfers are from the port in Carti to the prebooked island lodge. You can explore some nearby islands on day trips from your lodge.

The best way to see several islands and reach beautiful places like Cayos Holandeses, the Dutch Cays, is to sail the San Blas islands, as mentioned above. These islands are further away and harder to reach.

Can I stay on the San Blas Islands? Are there San Blas Island hotels?

Tourists are only allowed on a few San Blas islands, and on these islands, the Guna provide food and lodging year-round. Accommodation consists mainly of backpacker lodges, reachable by jeep and boat via Carti port.

What should I bring to the San Blas Islands?

What you should bring depends on whether you’re planning a day trip (not recommended, in my opinion, unless you literally only have one day) or staying on the islands for a couple of nights (yes!!!).

Do your research beforehand to make sure you have all the essentials. A day of exploring only requires the basics: sunscreen, snacks, a big bottle of water, and adequate beachwear.

For an extended trip, however, you’ll have to factor in the realities of island living. Although the San Blas Islands, also known as the Guna Yala comarca (an independent territory), are not far from modern Panama City, you will feel like you have traveled in time to a whole different place.

The San Blas Islands are very remote. There are no ATMs, so bring enough cash, preferably in small notes. Notes larger than US$ 20 aren’t even accepted.

There are no big supermarkets, so it’s best to bring everything you need. While many islands have a kiosk dedicated to selling souvenirs, soft drinks, and alcohol, we highly recommend bringing your own supply of drinkable water. Most arranged transport from Panama City includes a stop at a supermarket, so stock up on a couple of 5L bottles and use them to refill smaller ones.

Suggested packing list

Other than food, water, snacks for in-between meals, and cash, here are some other items you’ll want to bring to San Blas. Keep in mind you’ll basically live in your swimsuit:

  • a sarong for the beach
  • a towel for showers (unless you are staying in the Yandup Island Lodge)
  • maybe a light sheet (sometimes there’s a breeze and it can get a bit cooler at night, but you will probably be fine without)
  • your own snorkeling equipment
  • mosquito spray – there really are hardly any mosquitoes but more sand flies (especially at the port in Carti)
  • flip flops
  • light short and long-sleeve cotton clothing
  • hat
  • baby wipes or hand sanitizer
  • a good book or fully charged Kindle
  • any medication you need
  • a camera or GoPro
  • a wet bag to save your electronics & valuables (alternatively a plastic bag) from the elements

Leave all your big luggage and suitcases in Panama City. Hotels will keep it for you free of charge. Neither the boats nor the jeeps have space for big luggage. And as you can see above, you really don’t need much on the islands. A large backpack will be perfect.

What else should I know about visiting the San Blas Islands?

Spending time in the San Blas Islands exposes you to a completely different side of Panama. When you get to know the hosts and their customs, keep an open mind and remain respectful of your surroundings. Your stay in this part of the country will be an experience you’ll never forget.

Also, life on the islands means that staying connected to the outside world may not be possible. Mobile network signals are often weak. Going off the grid may feel daunting for some of you, but take it as a chance to unplug. Just make sure to let loved ones know you’ll be hard to reach for a few days to avoid unnecessary worry. And enjoy this breathtakingly beautiful piece of land.

Conclusion:

The San Blas Islands are truly an amazing place to visit! The small islands, with their unspoiled beauty, turquoise water, white-sand beaches, and swaying palm trees, are absolutely stunning. But they are not well developed. Accommodations are very rustic.

If beautiful, peaceful destinations away from the crowds are for you and you don’t mind basic accommodation… go! If you are a luxury traveler: avoid!

My personal opinion: I have been to countless countries, all continents (including Antarctica), and many of the most beautiful places in the world – and the San Blas Islands are still my favorite place to visit. I can’t wait to go back there and show them to my sons! I know they will love them just as much as I do.

The surrounding natural beauty has also inspired artists, poets, and writers well before the Spanish founded it in 1524. 2. LAS ISLETAS DE GRANADA

While in Granada, make sure to also include a visit to Las Isletas or Islets of Granada. They are located within Lake Nicaragua and are more than 25,000 years old. The islands were initially formed from the ash and stones of the Mombacho volcano.

Lake Nicaragua, Central America’s largest lake, is home to an archipelago of 365 islands. Formed by the eruption of Mombacho Volcano, the Islets of Granada include uninhabited isles, traditional fishing villages, private residences, and luxurious resorts.

3. LAGUNA DE APOYO

Nicaragua is famous for its lakes and Laguna de Apoyo is a must-visit.

Laguna de Apoyo is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 18-square mile body of water contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano (think big warm clean lake!). Laguna de Apoyo is one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful natural wonders and a great place to vacation. For anyone traveling through Nicaragua, it definitely is one of the best things to do in Nicaragua and should not be missed.

Here you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or admire the beautiful landscape around you on an eco-friendly boat tour! I recommend staying at one of the beautiful boutique hotels along the lake rather than visiting the lagoon on a day trip or tour.

4. MASAYA VOLCANO

Masaya Volcano is one of Nicaragua’s top places to visit and an easy day trip from Granada.

The most amazing part about visiting this active volcano is how close you can get to the lip of the crater. You can simply drive up to the edge and park. Looking down into the crater, you can see a lake of molten lava.

Visit after dark to see the glow the bubbling lava creates inside the pit. If you visit during the day, there is a visitor center on-site, as well as picnic facilities.

5. LEON

The west-coast city of León boasts many fascinating attractions. The Cathedral of León, also known as La Catedral del Espíritu Santo, is a beautiful church that was constructed in the late 17th century. It is framed by a number of dazzling baroque and rococo structures. Nearby, the ruins of León Viejo are located; remnants of an ancient village built by Spanish colonists in 1523. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

León buzzes with energy, lively and full of young people. It is a university city and in fact, Nicaragua’s first university was founded here in 1912. The city is packed with interesting museums and murals. León served as the capital of Nicaragua during colonial times.

6. CERRO NEGRO VOLCANO

Another volcano experience, geared more towards adventure junkies, awaits you at Cerro Negro near Leon.

Here you can volcano-board down Nicaragua’s youngest volcano. It is one of the most popular things to do in Nicaragua and you will need to book a tour to partake. It is also a unique tourism scenario providing a stunning natural setting, the opportunity to hike an active cone and see its crater, and canopy lines available for visitors.

The steep slopes of this black volcano lack any vegetation. On and around the volcano lies a big layer of volcanic ash and rocks. An eruption in 1999 has left a wide border of black, volcanic material around the Cerro Negro and there are two smaller craters right next to the volcano which were recently formed.

 7. ESTELI

This charming town lies in a valley at an altitude of 2,500 feet in the northeast of Nicaragua. It is surrounded by mountains, in a beautiful natural area. Here, mass tourism is still far away and you can immerse yourself in the real Nicaraguan way of life.

Estelí is Nicaragua’s agriculture centre. In this region, a lot of (organic) vegetables and fruit are being produced, but also crops like tobacco. You can visit a tobacco plantation or one of the cigar factories where high-quality cigars are being produced.

Other activities include hiking, waterfalls, lakes, or canyoning. There’s a lot to see and do.

8. ISLA OMETEPE

Isla Ometepe is in Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America. The island has not one but two volcanos, both of which can be climbed.

Maderas is the volcano in the south of Ometepe, and it is less active than the Concepcion volcano in the north. The hike to the summit of Maderas takes you to a beautiful crater lake. There is also an impressive waterfall at the base.

The island is also popular for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, or kayaking the Istian River. The natural Ojo de Agua pool is a great way to spend a few hours cooling off.  You can also just relax on the white sands of Santo Domingo beach.

Accommodation on the island is often on a finca or eco-hotel. Make sure to include Ometepe Island on your list of things to do in Nicaragua and spend at least 2, better 3, nights here!

9. EMERALD COAST

On the southwest coast of Nicaragua, San Juan Del Sur has always been the main tourist destination, but more and more people are now also adding the Emerald Coast and Popoyo to their to-do list while visiting Nicaragua. 

The once-sleepy Emerald Coast of Nicaragua has now awakened, with the rapid advance of tourism due to a newly paved highway, the opening of the Costa Esmeralda Airport, and a variety of golf courses and new upscale resorts.

The Emerald Coast is the 20-mile stretch of coastline between the towns of Tola and Astillero to the north which is the furthest city on the coast in the Rivas province. The area’s main tourism comes from surfers as this region houses the best waves in Nicaragua, including Playa Colorado and Popoyo.

10. SAN JUAN DEL SUR

Nicaragua is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America. San Juan del Sur, located on the Pacific Coast, has one of the best. The town is a great base for tourists looking to explore the area’s natural beauty and rich history.

What used to be a fishing village has developed into a bigger place that is well geared to tourism, with lots of accommodations and restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

San Juan del Sur is a favorite of surfers (try a surf lesson!) and backpackers and is also a great place to catch a wonderful Pacific sunset – definitely one of the top things to do in Nicaragua.

If you find San Juan del Sur too busy, then located along a bumpy dirt road just twenty minutes north of San Juan del Sur, Playa Maderas makes a fantastic alternative.

11. LITTLE CORN ISLAND (MY PERSONAL FAVORITE!)

If you are looking for calm waters and white sand beaches, head to the Corn Islands on the Caribbean Coast.  You will need to catch a flight from Managua to access these pristine and remote islands. From Big Corn Island you take a ferry to Little Corn Island but trust me, the effort is worth it!

Little Corn is tiny, only 500 people live on this small island where there are no cars and which is a real jewel for diving enthusiasts.

Life is slow in the Corn Islands: just relax, snorkel, dive, lay at the beach, eat some amazing seafood and feel in paradise. A week will quickly slip by as you relax and unwind and explore its underwater pleasures.
