The Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

The Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

Beautiful Nicaragua is called the “country of colonial cities and lakes” or also the “country of volcanoes and lakes”. It offers coffee and tobacco cultivation, Spanish colonial history, active volcanoes as well as a practically untouched rainforest and Caribbean islands. There are so many things to see and do in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is ideal for those who are looking for a special and authentic experience. It is culturally and naturally diverse with many tourist activities and attractions. Discover Nicaragua, the heart of Central America, on your Nicaragua family vacation or your honeymoon in Nicaragua. Another fantastic way to experience the highlights of Nicaragua with freedom and flexibility is a scenic self-drive tour.

In this article, we will discuss some of the best places to visit in Nicaragua.

Best Things To Do In Nicaragua

1. GRANADA

Nicaragua is richly blessed with original preserved remains of Spanish colonial history. You can find churches, palaces, manor houses, and monasteries in the colonial style of the country.

León and Granada, the two eternally rival colonial cities, offer a particularly imposing selection of historic buildings and districts that can be found around the country.

Granada is one of the oldest cities in the Americas and its well-kept compact old town is a tourist favorite. It is a great introduction to the country and an easy city to wander and explore on foot. Its beautiful churches, colorful buildings, and quaint streets make it a photographer’s dream. Palms rise amidst a sea of red tile roofs against the backdrop of lakeshores and volcanoes. There are baroque and Moorish aesthetic influences interspersed throughout the cityscape.

The surrounding natural beauty has also inspired artists, poets, and writers well before the Spanish founded it in 1524. Combine these charming features with the relaxed air of the Nicaraguan people – one of the happiest in the world – and you have quite possibly the most laid-back and accessible city in Central America, fully imbued with color and culture.

2. LAS ISLETAS DE GRANADA

While in Granada, make sure to also include a visit to Las Isletas or Islets of Granada. They are located within Lake Nicaragua and are more than 25,000 years old. The islands were initially formed from the ash and stones of the Mombacho volcano.

Lake Nicaragua, Central America’s largest lake, is home to an archipelago of 365 islands. Formed by the eruption of Mombacho Volcano, the Islets of Granada include uninhabited isles, traditional fishing villages, private residences, and luxurious resorts.

3. LAGUNA DE APOYO

Nicaragua is famous for its lakes and Laguna de Apoyo is a must-visit.

Laguna de Apoyo is a clean, blue, and thermally vented 18-square mile body of water contained inside the crater of the Apoyo Volcano (think big warm clean lake!). Laguna de Apoyo is one of Nicaragua’s most beautiful natural wonders and a great place to vacation. For anyone traveling through Nicaragua, it definitely is one of the best things to do in Nicaragua and should not be missed.

Here you can enjoy swimming, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or admire the beautiful landscape around you on an eco-friendly boat tour! I recommend staying at one of the beautiful boutique hotels along the lake rather than visiting the lagoon on a day trip or tour.

4. MASAYA VOLCANO

Masaya Volcano is one of Nicaragua’s top places to visit and an easy day trip from Granada.

The most amazing part about visiting this active volcano is how close you can get to the lip of the crater. You can simply drive up to the edge and park. Looking down into the crater, you can see a lake of molten lava.

Visit after dark to see the glow the bubbling lava creates inside the pit. If you visit during the day, there is a visitor center on-site, as well as picnic facilities.

5. LEON

The west-coast city of León boasts many fascinating attractions. The Cathedral of León, also known as La Catedral del Espíritu Santo, is a beautiful church that was constructed in the late 17th century. It is framed by a number of dazzling baroque and rococo structures. Nearby, the ruins of León Viejo are located; remnants of an ancient village built by Spanish colonists in 1523. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

León buzzes with energy, lively and full of young people. It is a university city and in fact, Nicaragua’s first university was founded here in 1912. The city is packed with interesting museums and murals. León served as the capital of Nicaragua during colonial times.

6. CERRO NEGRO VOLCANO

Another volcano experience, geared more towards adventure junkies, awaits you at Cerro Negro near Leon.

Here you can volcano-board down Nicaragua’s youngest volcano. It is one of the most popular things to do in Nicaragua and you will need to book a tour to partake. It is also a unique tourism scenario providing a stunning natural setting, the opportunity to hike an active cone and see its crater, and canopy lines available for visitors.

The steep slopes of this black volcano lack any vegetation. On and around the volcano lies a big layer of volcanic ash and rocks. An eruption in 1999 has left a wide border of black, volcanic material around the Cerro Negro and there are two smaller craters right next to the volcano which were recently formed.

 7. ESTELI

This charming town lies in a valley at an altitude of 2,500 feet in the northeast of Nicaragua. It is surrounded by mountains, in a beautiful natural area. Here, mass tourism is still far away and you can immerse yourself in the real Nicaraguan way of life.

Estelí is Nicaragua’s agriculture centre. In this region, a lot of (organic) vegetables and fruit are being produced, but also crops like tobacco. You can visit a tobacco plantation or one of the cigar factories where high-quality cigars are being produced.

Other activities include hiking, waterfalls, lakes, or canyoning. There’s a lot to see and do.

8. ISLA OMETEPE

Isla Ometepe is in Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America. The island has not one but two volcanos, both of which can be climbed.

Maderas is the volcano in the south of Ometepe, and it is less active than the Concepcion volcano in the north. The hike to the summit of Maderas takes you to a beautiful crater lake. There is also an impressive waterfall at the base.

The island is also popular for horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, or kayaking the Istian River. The natural Ojo de Agua pool is a great way to spend a few hours cooling off.  You can also just relax on the white sands of Santo Domingo beach.

Accommodation on the island is often on a finca or eco-hotel. Make sure to include Ometepe Island on your list of things to do in Nicaragua and spend at least 2, better 3, nights here!

9. EMERALD COAST

On the southwest coast of Nicaragua, San Juan Del Sur has always been the main tourist destination, but more and more people are now also adding the Emerald Coast and Popoyo to their to-do list while visiting Nicaragua.

The once-sleepy Emerald Coast of Nicaragua has now awakened, with the rapid advance of tourism due to a newly paved highway, the opening of the Costa Esmeralda Airport, and a variety of golf courses and new upscale resorts.

The Emerald Coast is the 20-mile stretch of coastline between the towns of Tola and Astillero to the north which is the furthest city on the coast in the Rivas province. The area’s main tourism comes from surfers as this region houses the best waves in Nicaragua, including Playa Colorado and Popoyo.

10. SAN JUAN DEL SUR

Nicaragua is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Central America. San Juan del Sur, located on the Pacific Coast, has one of the best. The town is a great base for tourists looking to explore the area’s natural beauty and rich history.

What used to be a fishing village has developed into a bigger place that is well geared to tourism, with lots of accommodations and restaurants and vibrant nightlife.

San Juan del Sur is a favorite of surfers (try a surf lesson!) and backpackers and is also a great place to catch a wonderful Pacific sunset – definitely one of the top things to do in Nicaragua.

If you find San Juan del Sur too busy, then located along a bumpy dirt road just twenty minutes north of San Juan del Sur, Playa Maderas makes a fantastic alternative.

11. LITTLE CORN ISLAND (MY PERSONAL FAVORITE!)

If you are looking for calm waters and white sand beaches, head to the Corn Islands on the Caribbean Coast.  You will need to catch a flight from Managua to access these pristine and remote islands. From Big Corn Island you take a ferry to Little Corn Island but trust me, the effort is worth it!

Little Corn is tiny, only 500 people live on this small island where there are no cars and which is a real jewel for diving enthusiasts.

Life is slow in the Corn Islands: just relax, snorkel, dive, lay at the beach, eat some amazing seafood and feel in paradise. A week will quickly slip by as you relax and unwind and explore its underwater pleasures.

Check out our Caribbean Honeymoon in Nicaragua for more details on the islands and an amazing boutique hotel.

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget

Are you looking for a refreshing tropical escape from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life? Whether craving a relaxing beach vacation to lounge, party or explore, it can be difficult to find the best tropical destinations on a budget.

Thankfully, there are plenty of exciting and affordable beach vacation spots that won’t break the bank. These top 5 tropical destinations on a budget offer pristine sandy beaches, affordable accommodations, budget-friendly restaurants, and an array of free attractions. Plus, they are only a few flight hours away from the US.

The Best Tropical Destinations On A Budget – Near the US

MEXICO:

Mexico has long been an affordable tropical destination for those operating on a budget, offering refreshing beaches and unique cenotes. If you are looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience beyond the luxury resorts, you will find plenty of fabulous vacation spots where you will stay within your budget.

This beautiful country offers so much more than laying out by the pool and sipping margaritas. With cheap international flights landing every hour, Mexico is one of the best tropical destinations on a budget for any traveler.

How to Experience Mexico on a Budget:

From snow-capped mountains to arid deserts, Mexico is home to a variety of climates. If you are planning on sticking to the tropical coastline, you can generally expect pleasant weather year-round. If you are looking to visit during the sunniest time of the year, make sure to avoid booking between May and September to avoid the rainy season—but if you are looking for the best rates, the rainy season may be your best bet.

There are plenty of amazing things to do in Mexico on a budget. One of the top outdoor activities to enjoy is swimming in a beautiful cenote. If you are planning your vacation to one of the best tropical destinations on a budget in the Yucatan Peninsula (Tulum, Valladolid, Merida, etc.), make sure to stop by some of these natural sinkholes. The cenotes were sacred to the ancient Mayans, and many said this significant civilization relied heavily on cenotes to advance the way they did.

If you are staying near the beach, grab your mask and snorkel and head over to some of the top snorkeling spots in Central America. While the best snorkeling destination in Mexico is Isla Mujeres, you will not be disappointed by what the rest of Mexico’s coastline has to offer.

Another excellent way to enjoy your tropical Mexico vacation on a budget is by exploring the historic temples, pyramids, and ruins. Hiking an ancient Aztec or Mayan ruin should be high on your Mexico bucket list and will typically cost you a nominal fee or nothing for a day of discovery.

BELIZE

While many refer to Belize as a more expensive destination in Central America, in recent years Belize has become one of the most accessible and suitable tropical destinations on a budget. This small country’s untouched beauty can be safely explored through vacation packages and meticulous planning.

Since not many people visit Belize, you can expect to discover its magical charm without hundreds of tourists surrounding you. From the colorful uninhabited rainforests to the quaint seaside towns, Belize has plenty more to offer than what meets the eye.

How to Experience Belize on a Budget:

You can find amazing deals on hotels, excursions, and Belize vacation packages between June and November. These months typically see a bit more rain than the others, but the weather in Belize (especially along the coast) remains fairly pleasant year-round.

The top thing to do during your time in Belize is to explore the Mayan ruins. Remnants of the fascinating Mayan civilization can be found throughout this beautiful country as Belize was the center of the Mundo Maya. If you are staying in Corozal, head over to Santa Rita or Cerros. If in Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, there are plenty of cheap boat trips to Lamanai and Altun Ha.

You haven’t truly experience Belize until you discover the pristine turquoise sea surrounding the cayes. Boasting some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean, you will not be disappointed by the amplitude of colors and clarity of the Caribbean Sea as you observe the tropical fish and marine wildlife. If you prefer to stick to the shore, Placencia is world-renown for its 17 miles of golden-sand beaches—perfect for relaxing hours of sunning, swimming, and strolling along the shore.

Finally, head inland to discover Belize’s vast jungle featuring cascading waterfalls and intertwining rivers. Whether you are visiting the Stann Creek, Cayo, or Toledo regions, you can join one of the trips or expect an excursion to the nearby jungle where you can explore the Rio Frio or Blue Creek waterfalls, canoe down the Mopan River, or zip-line through the jungle canopy.

COSTA RICA

The allure of Costa Rica extends far beyond your typical sunny beaches and expensive resorts. This beautiful city is home to 6% of the world’s biodiversity, with most of its expanse offered in lush forests. From quaint towns to tropical jungles, Costa Rica offers an array of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Although Costa Rica’s immense beauty can come with a high price tag, if you know which areas are more affordable or book a vacation package, you can avoid unnecessary costs and explore this beautiful country without breaking the bank. As one of the best tropical destinations on a budget, Costa Rica offers a vast array of affordable accommodation, delicious local foods, and low-cost activities.

How to Experience Costa Rica on a Budget:

Costa Rica is similar to Belize in that the best budget-friendly months to visit are during the rainy or green season, from May to November. These months tend to welcome a bit more rain but fewer crowds, leading to overall lower costs. Of course, it is also great to travel during all months of the year, offering outstanding weather and a tropical Caribbean breeze.

With over 20 national parks in Costa Rica, visiting any one of them is a great way to stay on budget. Each Costa Rican national park has something unique to offer, whether it’s a volcano, waterfall, beach, or something you never could have imagined. Visiting national parks is one of the best cheap things to do in Costa Rica during your vacation! While Cahuita National Park is free, the others will cost a nominal fee for entry to explore the entire day.

A great way to learn about the fascinating history of Costa Rica is by heading over to the country’s capital city San Jose and checking out some of the excellent museums. The Jade Museum, Gold Museum, and the National Museum are reasonably priced for you to explore during your time in San Jose. Afterward, make sure to stroll the streets and check out the local restaurants and artisanal shops.

Another way to easily cut back on expenses during your time in one of the best tropical destinations on a budget is hiking on your own. Guided walking tours can be more expensive since you will have to pay for a guide and transportation, but if you are renting a car, you can easily drive out to the nearby nature spots and hike on your own.

NICARAGUA

As the largest country in Central America, Nicaragua has long been known as one of the best tropical destinations on a budget. Frequently referred to as the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes”, this unique country is home to an intricate volcanic terrain, lush cloud forests, historic colonial cities, and rugged coastlines.

While Nicaragua is gaining traction to become the next ‘hot spot’ in the Caribbean, few tourists have discovered this beautiful country, allowing it to remain one of the most budget-friendly spots in Central America. Whether visiting on a Nicaragua vacation package or exploring the city on your own, you will not regret spending your vacation in this beautiful country.

How to Experience Nicaragua on a Budget:

There are two distinct seasons in Nicaragua; the dry season running from November to April and the green season which falls between May and October. To avoid the crowds and peak prices, you should try to visit during the green season which welcomes more rain. The rainier months are also ideal for those looking for nice surfing conditions and deserted beaches to enjoy the waves.

Nature-lovers should prioritize discovering Rio San Juan during their time in this beautiful country. This historic waterway is a perfect stop for anyone looking to going kayaking, fishing, and watch wildlife during their time in one of the most affordable tropical destinations.

If you are looking to explore Nicaragua’s vast volcanic range, make sure to plan a trip to one of the country’s 19 volcanoes. The two peaks on Ometepe, Concepcion and Maderas, are two of the most popular day hikes offered in the country. If you are searching for awe-inspiring Insta-worthy views, hike out to Telica for a breathtaking sunset.

Other than laying out by the beach, you will also enjoy learning about Nicaragua’s rich history in regards to coffee. As Nicaragua’s primary export, you will want to spend a day visiting the misty and mountainous northern region of the country which produces over 80% of the country’s output. Plenty of coffee tours are offered at reasonable rates, allowing you to fully understand the importance of coffee to this tropical country.

PANAMA

Since the creation of the Panama Canal, Panama has become the international hub for shipping, serving as a connection between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. In recent years, Panama has started to rise as one of the most unique tropical destinations on a budget for travelers around the world.

Most visitors will arrive in Panama City and head over to the popular areas of Bocas del Toro or Boquete to start their adventure, but if you head to some of the lesser-known destinations, such as the San Blas Islands, you may be rewarded with tastier food, fewer tourists, lower prices, and a unique once-in-a-lifetime experience.

How to Experience Panama on a Budget

When planning your vacation in Panama, you should consider booking your stay between late April and mid-December for the lowest prices. This rainy season will typically see rain daily, however, most spouts will last less than an hour. November typically welcomes the most rainfall, but with rain, you will also notice more vibrant natural wildlife during your time exploring Panama’s great outdoors.

One of the must-see attractions in Panama is the Panama Canal. As one of the most difficult engineering feats in history, the Panama Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Visitors can check out the Miraflores Canal Visitor Center to learn about the fascinating history of the project where many difficulties were faced, and obstacles were overcome.

Boquete, a small town found in the Chiriqui province, is a scenic location to explore during your time in Panama. Boasting towering hills and mountains, Boquete offers visitors a unique panoramic view of the country. The area’s hiking trails, ancient volcano, cascading waterfalls, and unique wildlife are all perfect ways to discover what Panama is all about.

Head over to Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic district, to stroll down Panama’s historically significant streets. This district was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 and welcomes plenty of sites eager visitors to explore. Some of the more popular attractions include El Palacio de las Garzas, La Catedral Metropolitana, and Saint Francis of Assisi.

Did you know that you can even stay in an overwater bungalow on a budget? It can be one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating ways to spend your time in Central America. The most beautiful and affordable overwater bungalows in the Caribbean are found in three countries: Panama, Belize, and Mexico.

3 Incredible Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

3 Incredible Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

Costa Rica is a land of great wildlife, volcanoes, rain and cloud forests, huge waterfalls, and mighty rivers. It occupies a privileged spot with beaches in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. One of the best ways to experience Costa Rica’s diversity is on a road trip.
Some of the most interesting, little-explored destinations are only accessible by car, and for the adventurous traveler, there is simply no substitute for freedom. In some cases, the drive itself – and all the striking scenery along the way – becomes a highlight of your Costa Rica road trip.

Also, you experience the country beyond typical tourism by renting a car and hitting the road to explore the many sights of Costa Rica.

“You haven’t lived unless you’ve had at least one road trip in a tropical country.”

Below we give you 3 incredible Costa Rica road trip suggestions.

Costa Rica Road Trip Ideas

Costa Rica Road Trip 1: San Jose to La Fortuna (about 4 hrs)

Costa Rica Road Trip 2: Monteverde to Playa Grande / Tamarindo (about 4-5 hrs)

Costa Rica Road Trip 3: San Jose to Santa Teresa (about 5 hrs)

1. Costa Rica Road Trip: San José to La Fortuna (about 4 hrs)

If you are arriving in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, and taking a road trip to La Fortuna, the drive is smooth and easy despite its curvy road. The trip ensures views of the beautiful national parks. The Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna is a popular tourist attraction.

Although currently in a resting phase, Arenal remained the country’s most active volcano for the past 43 years. … Since 2010, however, the volcano’s seismicity, explosions, and lava flows have decreased significantly. It is, scientists say, still alive; it is just sleeping.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

If you are leaving San Jose early in the morning and have all day for this Costa Rica road trip, here are some interesting places to stop along the way from San Jose to La Fortuna. A nice stop is La Paz Waterfall Gardens.

It is located about halfway between San Jose and La Fortuna. This park has 5 waterfalls and an animal sanctuary and is awesome for families.

Coffee Tours

If you’re interested in coffee, San Jose has some of the best coffee tours in Costa Rica. You can do a morning tour at Doka Coffee Estate. Or at Hacienda Alsacia – a Starbucks Coffee Farm. Yes, you read right. Starbucks owns a coffee farm! Purchased in 2013, Hacienda Alsacia is a 240-hectare coffee farm in Costa Rica that serves as a global Research and Development facility and working farm for Starbucks.

Rio Celeste

If you have plenty of time for this road trip in Costa Rica, do yourself a favor and include Rio Celeste in the plan. The dazzling centerpiece of Costa Rica’s Tenorio Volcano National Park, the “Celeste River”, is most famous for its shockingly bright blue color.

Arenal is good, but the volcanic eruptions and lava flow that made it a tourist destination stopped abruptly in 2010. Meanwhile, the country’s true natural wonder is as crazy Azul, the color of blue Gatorade, as ever. The forest surrounding the river is lush and wild, providing a home to an abundance of Costa Rican fauna, including the iconic jaguar.

2. Costa Rica Road Trip: Monteverde to Playa Grande (about 4-5 hrs)

Although some people don’t have the time to visit both, La Fortuna AND Monteverde, Monteverde is absolutely worth visiting. The cloud forests are incredibly unique and may disappear in this century so it’s worth making Monteverde part of your Costa Rica road trip to see them.

After visiting Monteverde, continue your road trip on roads with a mix of gravel and concrete and plenty of potholes, to the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Take a break from driving and stop at one of the “sopas”, small local restaurants.

Here you can indulge in authentic Costa Rican cuisine, from empanadas to fresh fish and patacones (deep-fried, flattened plantains).

Marino Las Baulas National Park and Playa Grande

Guanacaste’s coast is perfect for sunning, surfing, and spotting sea turtles. As part of the Marino Las Baulas National Park, Playa Grande in Costa Rica is an important beach not just for surf lovers but for nature and wildlife. Located along the Tamarindo Bay, Playa Grande is perfect for those looking for a more low-key beach away from the bustling Tamarindo town.

With tan colored sand and bright blue waters, you don’t have to be a surfer to fall in love with Playa Grande. Separated from Playa Tamarindo by the Matapalo River, Playa Grande offers travelers a less crowded beach to catch the perfect wave or enjoy a nice long walk during sunset time.

Playa Grande is home to the Leatherback Sea Turtles. They lay eggs and build nests between October and March, and between April and September, the eggs hatch, and thousands of baby turtles hobble their way into the ocean.

3. Costa Rica Road Trip: San Jose to Santa Teresa (about 5 hrs)

This Costa Rica road trip includes a picturesque ferry ride leaving from Punta Arenas across the Gulf of Nicoya (yes, your car goes too!), and it only gets better from there. The roads are well paved until you reach the southern Nicoya Peninsula.

This area of the country is infamously known for its rough roads, though they are slowly improving. While the drive is not the smoothest, you are rewarded with breathtaking landscapes.

Curu Wildlife Refuge

Make sure to stop at the Curu Wildlife Refuge opposite Tortuga Island. The area protects several habitat types and is home to 232 species of birds, 78 species of mammals, 87 species of reptiles, and more than 500 species of plants have been identified. There are trails offering diverse wildlife views, horseback riding tours & activities like snorkeling.

Tambor Beach

Continue your road trip and you will pass Tambor. It is located in a sheltered bay and therefore ideal for swimming. Due to the volcanic history of this area, the beach has a dark color. Numerous almond trees at Playa Tambor attract many beautiful Scarlet Macaws. Nearby Tango Mar Resort is a perfect Costa Rica escape and your dream of a beachfront vacation comes true! It is located on an incredibly beautiful beach which is definitely worth the drive here. If you are looking for calmness, this is the place. Great location, beautiful views, and well-maintained grounds.

Montezuma

Another nice place to stay on the Nicoya Peninsula is Montezuma. While Santa Teresa is very spread out, I felt Montezuma was a bit cozier. Montezuma is famous for its bohemian atmosphere and artsy hippie flair. It is a very picturesque beach town surrounded by mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, perfect for any beach bum or nature lover looking for a coastal escape.

One of the most charming things about the beaches around Montezuma is the tide pools. Since the coastline is so rocky, during low tide you can sit in the tide pools or see the many critters inside. And Montezuma Falls is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Costa Rica. The waterfalls are a set of three cascades that have something for everyone.

Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is the perfect destination for both relaxation and leisure. Its idyllic white-sand beaches are great for laying down a mat doing yoga or grabbing a surfboard and catching a wave. There is a wide variety of accommodation and dining options in Santa Teresa to meet every type of traveler’s needs.

MAKE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES ON A FAMILY VACATION IN COSTA RICA

MAKE BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES ON A FAMILY VACATION IN COSTA RICA

b
M

Are you planning a vacation with your family?

Whether you opt for a jungle adventure, rainforest safari, or waterfall excursions, a family vacation in Costa Rica will surely not disappoint you. Costa Rica is such a beautiful and exotic place. There is something to do for everyone! And, the “Ticos” love children!

Costa Rica is beautiful and its rain forests and national parks are a nature lover’s paradise. You might wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys – surely an unforgettable experience for the whole family!

Here are just a few reasons to choose a family vacation in Costa Rica:

1. Back to nature:

Beaches, volcanoes, and hot springs

Nature is everywhere in Costa Rica. One of our favorites for a unique family vacation in Costa Rica is Manuel Antonio National Park. It is a nature reserve with trails easy enough for little kids to manage.

The excellent local guides will point out a sloth sleeping overhead or giant iguanas camouflaged by the trees. And on the outskirts of the park, you will find white-sand beaches, where you can snorkel to see lots of tropical fish, sign your kids up for surf school, or have a picnic on the beach.

Watch out for squirrel monkeys who might try to steal some of your lunch 😊.

A visit to an active volcano is also a must-see on any Costa Rica family vacation. With a bit of luck, your family can experience a minor eruption at Arenal Volcano. Nearby you will also find La Fortuna Waterfall – a place so near to nature, and yet so far from the sounds of the quaint town of La Fortuna. And after some hiking around the amazing volcano base, enjoy the local hot springs – a different kind of water park! Your kids will surely enjoy jumping from pool to pool.

Coffee, cacao, and fruit plantations

Or how about showing your children how bananas or pineapples grow? Can you imagine that this tiny country is the 2nd biggest exporter of pineapples in the world?

And maybe a coffee tour for the adults? Costa Rica is well-known for its gourmet coffee beans with the famous Tarrazú considered among the finest beans in the world. Did you know Starbucks has its own coffee farm in Alajuela, Costa Rica? Its mission is not to supply Starbucks with coffee but it’s mainly used for research to help ensure the future of coffee – for everyone. A coffee tour at Hacienda Alsacia is definitely something to write home about.

2. Adventures for every age

A Costa Rica family vacation offers outdoor activities for everyone. From ziplining and suspension bridges through the rainforest to horseback riding on beaches. And of course, there are lots of hiking trails all over the country, many in the Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve near Monteverde.

Another great place to be in nature and to enjoy an adventure is Tortuguero National Park which can only be reached by airplane or boat. But the effort is definitely worth it as it is an area of incredible biodiversity.

You will find eleven different habitats here — rainforests, mangroves, swamps, beaches, and lagoons, amongst many others. The national park is also a prime nesting area for Green Sea Turtles, Leatherbacks, and Hawksbill turtles.

3. Family-friendly hotels for every budget

Despite its limited size, Costa Rica offers a wide array of accommodations for families, from rustic lodges to chain hotels to luxury resorts.

Some of the best family hotels in Costa Rica are:

Lost Iguana Resort

The name Lost Iguana honors its location. Built on a mountainside, Lost Iguana is secluded in the vibrant forests of La Fortuna and has direct and lovely views of the rainforest and volcano. You will love the walks along the trails on the property.

This hotel was created with a very special thought in mind: to provide guests with the opportunity of being surrounded by abundant tropical life and still maintain a “luxury feel”. The rooms are spread all around the greenery with beautifully landscaped grounds.

The hot tub is pleasantly warm, and the swim-up bar is a really nice touch. Another attraction is their hibiscus nature maze, great fun and well worth a visit! It is indeed a wonderful place to hang out on your family vacation in Costa Rica!

El Silencio Lodge & Spa

El Silencio Lodge & Spa is an exclusive haven, perfect for those who need a quiet break. Floating like a cloud in the rainforest canopy near the Poas Volcano, El Silencio Lodge & Spa is one of the most secluded, tranquil and relaxing luxury hotels in the Costa Rican mountains.

The eco-resort was created to be a luxury retreat for travelers who seek out authentic experiences and a deep connection to nature. Simple luxury and exhilarating adventures are the essences of the El Silencio guest experience: a torch-lit forest dinner featuring farm-to-table ingredients, scenic hikes in the Hummingbird Garden and cloud forest trails, zip-lining through the forest canopy or rappelling down the face of a roaring waterfall.

El Silencio Lodge & Spa is located in picturesque Bajos del Toro on a 500-acre private cloud forest reserve flanked by the Juan Castro Blanco and Poas Volcano National Parks.

Just 90 minutes from San José, this luxurious eco-resort is a dream destination for Costa Rica mountain honeymoons, family vacations, or wellness holidays.

Hotel Capitán Suizo

Located right on the beach, Capitan Suizo is the perfect place for a relaxing beach holiday. It is an extraordinary place, environmentally conscious and run by a Swiss family.

Elegance in harmony with nature is their motto. You can explore their abundant garden sat your own pace and then walk a few steps and you will be relaxing at the beach.

You will also take pleasure in unwinding in your private bungalow. In the excellent open-air restaurant and bar, the whole family can often experience live marimba music and folkloric dance groups.

Several activities like kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving or sailing tours can be arranged, as well as surf lessons at Tamarindo Beach. In the spa, you can enjoy several treatments, and a ping pong table is located next to the beach.

***

To sum up, it’s understandable why thousands of visitors flock to Costa Rica every year to experience some of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world.

Costa Rica is a country brimming with biodiversity, stunning cloud forests, untouched beaches along the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, majestic active volcanoes and breathtaking river valleys.
